Old Crow Medicine Show Giveaway: Tennessee Pusher

Tennessee Pusher, produced by Don Was, features 13 infectious tracks that offer a virtual American road trip, populated with characters that seem to span a century of the South. Down and outers, hustlers, freighthoppers – these are just a few of the archetypes we meet along the way. OCMS continues to create their special blend of American roots, rock, blues and country, but on TENNESSEE PUSHER, the band has truly found their own voice. With the exception of “Always Lift Him Up” by Blind Alfred Reed, all of the tracks on the album are OCMS originals. Here’s what people are saying about OCMS:
“One of the greatest bands that A Prairie Home Companion has ever had the pleasure to host.”
–Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion
“People ask me what The Old Crow Medicine Show are all about. If I’m in a hurry, I just say that they’re The Clash of bluegrass music, but that doesn’t really do anyone any justice. I could tell ‘em that they’re a rock ‘n roll band who use fiddles and acoustic guitars instead of Les Pauls and Marshal stacks, but that’s only one small part of the story. They’re an American Band – even more so than Grand Funk Railroad! In fact, it’s not hyperbolic to say that, as musicians, songwriters and singers, they are the smartest and finest purveyors of American music to come down the pike in decades.”
–Don Was, Producer of Tennessee Pusher

First off, I am really sorry that I have never heard of this band, but I plan on justifying that by going out and buying a CD. I love good American bands and I am a sap for strings in rock and roll music. So, please enter me into this contest and I am going out to get a CD.

I dont know anything about them either – though I have heard their name mentioned frequently, I’ve never heard their music (that I’m aware of).
I’ll try to check out their myspace later.

my favorite old crow medicine show song is always the one i haven’t heard yet. that’s how much i look forward to their releases. great band.

I guess “Wagon Wheel” is my favorite song by OCMS, though I haven’t heard a bad one yet.

As big of a fan as I am, I don’t have a favorite OCMS song. They are like your children, you love them all the same for different reasons. Whether it be a souped-up drug ballad like, “Tell it to Me,” or a more somber tune that tugs at your heart strings, like “Motel in Memphis,” or “We’re All in This Together,” you can find something different to relate to in every song. Like a poor farmer who has his crop washed away, or an addict looking for his fix, every song has a story that spans a generation.
The catchy lyrics, the rawness of the barely rosened bow on Ketch’s fiddle, the melodic three part harmony, Old Crow Medicine show is a band that harkens back to musical style that WAS sorely missed.

Like PaulaW I’ve heard of OCMS but I’ve never listened to their music. I am intrigued though.
Okay. Creepy. I just launched MySpace to see if I could hear their music there and the banner at the top is an advertisement for their music on Amie Street!!! So, coincidence or stupid cookie reader stuff?

Sorry to veer off topic here but just wanted to let Trailer know his new crop of 70’s album covers left me giggling like a stoner.

Hmm…I’m back. I *love* “Caroline” and “James River Blues” great sound!

Well OCMS is my favorite band of all times. I am seeing them for the 7th time tonight and still just as excited if not more then the first time i seem them at the Ryman in Nashville

Thanks Peter!

My absolute favorite OCMS song would have to be Wagon Wheel, but another favorite would also be their version of The Silver Dagger (Katie Dear). I love that song no matter who sings it!
I think Old Crow Medicine Show has one of the coolest band names of all time. It perfectly evokes that jug-band, old-timey sound, as well as making me think of Old Crow whiskey.
Old Crow Whiskey was apparently responsible for a pre-internet viral marketing campaign, but I got that information from Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader, so the story might be… well, you know.

My favorites are “Tell It To Me” and “Wagon Wheel.” I like just about all of their stuff though.
I don’t need the album though. I already have it. Just wanted to put in my two cents.
September 19, 2008 at 4:55 pm Permalink
My favorite Old Crow tracks have to be Ruben’s Train or Pour It On, Dock. Both of them are on Wawa, which I was lucky enough to get a copy of a while back. Definitely their best record so far… too bad it’s out of print. Hopefully they’ll reissue it one day.

I agree with LeeAnn about “Tell It To Me” and “Wagon Wheel” being my favorite OCMS songs as they motivated me to purchase their self titled album a couple of years back. I also really like “Poor Man” from that album as well as it evokes a 60’s mood very effectively. I would really like to hear this new one to see what Don Was has done production wise with such a free spirited band of musicians…..

my fav tune is definitly “fall on my knees” its on that can be found on the live album and on the big iron world ep. but there’s nothing like this tune when its live and in your face. it really gets the feet and the crowd moving. you can choose me if you want, im gonna buy the album either way, just wanted to give my two cents on “my” favorite OCMS tune, for those of yall who aint heard it… be sure to check it out!

I don’t know them, but I guess I should win because…
Because I barely have money to buy my own CDs, so free ones are great. xD

My favorite is I Hear Them All.
September 19, 2008 at 7:18 pm Permalink
I’m still getting used to it, but it’s good.
September 19, 2008 at 8:45 pm Permalink
The only song I know from this band is “Wagon Wheel”. I first heard the song from Jeremy McComb and later found out the Old Crow Medicine Show had previously recorded the song. I think I should win a copy of their cd because it might open me up to artists I have never listened to before. Also if I like what I hear, I might become a fan!

Tough call. “Wagon Wheel” is the song that turned me onto the band, but “Hard To Love” and “Poor Man” helped me realize these guys weren’t a one-song wonder.
September 19, 2008 at 10:07 pm Permalink
Wagon Wheel would have to be my favorite song by OCMS, as it was the song that first introduced me to their genius. James River Blues is also awesome, and Caroline is quickly becoming my new favorite OCMS song. Btw, it’s hard to believe that there are so many people who have never heard of them who are entering to win their cd.

I’ve only listened to OCMS on their MySpace page. I like their sounds but haven’t listened enough to have a favorite song. If I had their CD, I’d be able to pick one!

My favorite OCMS song by far is “I Hear THem All’….
“I hear leaders quit their lying
I hear babies quit their crying
I hear soldiers quit their dying one and all…’
Ill never forget seeing them at the Ryman and hearing those lines for the first time,..

Old Crow is one of the best bands ever i like every song but i love to sing their song Wagon Wheel (co Wrote by Bob Dylan) and i like Down Home Girl. They are so talented and have such a great sound but Tell It To Me is another great song by them. No Matter what if i don’t win the album i will just go out and buy it.
September 21, 2008 at 10:37 am Permalink
If i i had to choose a song it would be “Heart Up in the Sky.” i absolutely love that song. And if it wasn’t that, it would be “Satisfied”. thats a rockin little tune too. keep up the good work boys!
September 21, 2008 at 1:00 pm Permalink
An old girlfriend got me into these guys. And they’re the best thing that came out of that relationship. Especially “I Hear Them All.”
September 21, 2008 at 5:14 pm Permalink
I love Down Home Girl the most. The video is so alive, and the old man that thinks they are the Sex Pistols is a hoot!
September 22, 2008 at 2:33 am Permalink
My favorite OCMS song is definitely Wagon Wheel; I think the way they give it an olde-timey sound without making it seem outdated is brilliant, and the rhythm and melody roll along beautifully and simply. The vocals also have a certain edge and emotion to them, which isn’t easy to find in music today.
September 22, 2008 at 7:22 am Permalink
I have heard of this band through two of my favorite artists, Ashley Monroe and Shelly Fairchild, but have never taken the time to listen, so it would be great to be able to give them a listen (especially for free!)
September 22, 2008 at 7:53 am Permalink
Favorite? That’s impossible. Their songs I really like: “Down Home Girl”, “James River Blues”, “Union Maid”, “I Hear Them All”, “Tell It to Me”, “Poor Man”, “We’re All in This Together”, “Wagon Wheel”.
Saw them down at the New Orleans Jazz Fest after Katrina and I swear these guys went Zydeco for a stretch! ;-)
Very, very, very talented bunch!
Why should I win the CD? ‘Cause if I don’t I’ll spread it all over the internets that y’all are goofy lookin’ and your mamas dress you funny! :-o

Fall on my knees must be my favorite.
Willie can wail like no other.
And free is always good!

My favorites are “Tell It to Me” and “Wagon Wheel.”

I know, right? I almost commented on our matching choices.
Actually, since you voluntarily withdrew from the contest, I stole your answer and used it as my entry. ;-)

My favorite Old Crow Medicine Show song is “I Hear Them All”, because it truly highlights the bands ability to craft a beautiful thought provoking song.”I hear the sounds of tearing pages and the roar of burning paper.
All the crimes in acquisitions turn to air and ash and vapor.
And the rattle of the shackle far beyond emancipators.
And the loneliest who gather in their stalls. ” I hope that i win the new album because I need my OCMS fix.
September 22, 2008 at 9:37 pm Permalink
My favorite song is james river blues. Oh man that song just makes me feel like i’m living life. Like the blues just takes a moment out of life and examines it but that folk ballad takes life in the whole sceme of things. You know?
I would like this album because i’m dumping all my money into taking my gal to homecoming. I don’t got nothing extra, i owe money as it is. I don’t think i can wait for a while, and i don’t want to but it on credit to anyone cause i hate owing people.
September 22, 2008 at 10:36 pm Permalink
My favorite one definitely has to be Wagon Wheel… It was the first thing that popped up on Joost and immediately got hooked!
September 23, 2008 at 10:46 am Permalink
How can you beat their version of Wagon Wheel! Even though the video is more than a bit odd…
September 23, 2008 at 11:16 am Permalink
I think Willie Watson is the best, little-known voice out there anywhere (including his own band). Free Willie!
My favorites are “Hard to Tell”, “God’s Got It” and “We’re All In This Together”. My brothers and buddies played “We’re All In This Together” at our wedding at which point, there weren’t a dry eye in the pasture.
For the info of some of you who are new to OCMS, they are definitely a live band. If they are near you, don’t miss it.
September 23, 2008 at 1:59 pm Permalink
After I first heard Wagon Wheel a couple years ago, I played it all the time for OCMS virgins and they were all instantly hooked! Sweet ol’ bluegrass with a young, fresh perspective and great, relevant lyrics. Just played Wagon Wheel at my wedding and 200+ guests were belting it out like they were all at home, alone in the shower! Even my other favorite bands cover OCMS – like Against Me! Nice tribute. I want this album!

I LOVE OCMS! I saw them for the first time a couple of years ago (maybe only a year) in Phoenix, AZ at the Celebrity Theatre… WHAT A SHOW! The instruments… the voices… the passion. I just loved the entire night! And it was so cool to see the other fans getting totally into it, almost like jam-band style… dancing in the aisles. Gotta love when music moves you.
