NoDepression.com Ceases Editorial Operations, Morphs
In a letter posted to its website Friday, Publisher Kyla Fairchild announced that the web incarnation of Americana magazine No Depression has ceased editorial operations, citing a lack of revenue.
“While traffic to the website has been great and the response positive, we have determined that it is impossible to bring in enough revenue to support our basic business expenses, the largest chunk of that being the editorial budget. We have soldiered on for as long as we can, but are left with no choice but to discontinue the editorial budget at the present time.”
After publishing 75 bi-monthly issues between 1995, and 2008, No Depression ended regular print operations last June, also due to lack of revenue stemming from declining subscriptions and advertising.
A retooled, re-designed version of NoDepression.com launched on October 1st, 2008 as the magazine’s primary outlet. It lasted only five months.
In the letter, Fairchild indicated that NoDepression.com will remain online as a combination of a message board, blog and social networking site.
Fairchild also indicated that the magazine aims to make its entire archive available online.

No surprise. That web site just didn’t work…either technogically or editorially. If they wanted to stay in business, they should have figured out a way to keep the publication going, even if it meant going quarterly and jacking up the price.

Wow, this is really depressing!…(lol) I wish “Country Weekly” was offering a complete online version to its current subscribers who will now be left out in the cold (like myself) since its gone news stand only. No Depresion had some fantastic interviews over its lifetime, and the one with Elizabeth Cook really stands out in my mind. I’m glad the archives will be available online! As for the social networking part, finally an Americana fan base dating service apart from attending “Twangfest”! Whoopee!

Rick – I’m left holding the empty bag with my CW subscription as well. :-(

I’m gonna have to contact Country Weekly, since for some reason I recieved two copies of the last fortnightly issue, and no sign of the form for claiming a refund.

I don’t think CW is giving refunds to subscribers, David. It was my understanding that Country Weekly subscribers would be offered a subscription to another magazine (of your choice) owned by the same umbrella company that owns CW. I didn’t get a letter or anything with my last issue either, so maybe they changed their mind about that too.
RIP, No Depression. While not a huge fan of Americana or alt. country, it’s still sad to watch country music-related publications slowly disappear.

DP has had a hard time of it and I hope the community model works for them. I’ll do what I can to contribute to the cause.

A couple of weeks ago I got a postcard asking me to choose between three mags to replace my SW sub with. So I chose one … though I didnt like any of the choices.
NOW, TODAY – I got another postcard telling me the Feb 23 issue will be the last and on that issue a card gave me the option to choose one of three others. And if I would like a refund please write REFUND on the card. However, REFUND was not a choice on the card so I did not write refund so I guess now I’m stuck with a stupid replacement I dont want instead of a refund.
Needless to say I am NOT a happy camper!

They probably got complaints about not offering a refund option. Maybe you could send the new card back with a note saying you do want the refund rather than the previously selected magazine?
