I think Stephen H.’s reading of Toby’s statement is correct… but I also think it’s highly doubtful anyone black gives a damn about anything he says or sings. So anyone trying to read too much political import into anything Toby is talking about these days is stretching for a story to write.

Was it a long time ago Kelly? They were remodling when we were there about 18-24 months ago and it was a little messy just from the construction. But we stayed there in April and it was great. We’ll be staying there in Sept as well. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Besides purporting to speak for a race he’s not a part of, Keith’s comment rankled because it assumes that being sophisticated and well-spoken are exclusively “white” qualities. I was surprised he didn’t get in more trouble, actually.

wow, thats a shocker paula. I am in the hotel business and i can overlook many things, cuz i understand how the operation works and things that can happen. there were several areas of failure for me, maybe it was just a bad week for them…

Stormy, I think his comment implies that Obama is a presidential candidate in general because “he carries himself like a Caucasian”, which may be valid point only insomuch as can you picture someone like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton getting enough mainstream support to be a major party candidate? It says nothing about black people wanting a white leader.

Toby could have gone without speaking for “black society” (he coulda phrased that better) but his sentiment is something that I heard quite a bit from fellow faculty members while teaching at an African American high school last year. Basically, Obama is “black” to African Americans, and “white” to most of the general public, which is sad that that delineation is still made, but it IS still in many people’s minds.
