News Roundup: Rosanne Cash Responds To John Rich
And now for your late, late news (an abbreviated edition), direct from the home office in Wahoo, Nebraska:
- Rosanne Cash responds to John Rich’s claim that her father would be a John McCain supporter:
It is appalling to me that people still want to invoke my father’s name, five years after his death, to ascribe beliefs, ideals, values and loyalties to him that cannot possibly be determined, and to try to further their own agendas by doing so.
- Entertainment Weekly’s Chris Williman gives Meet Glen Campbell a grade of B+, writing that, “…the Wichita Lineman does imbue already good tracks like Tom Petty’s ”Walls” and Travis’ ”Sing” with a genuine sense of grandeur.”
- Mike from For The Record has written a short but worthwhile post about the potential globalization of Country Music:
We were rolling down the road in our small bus in Kigali, Rwanda when we came to a stop in traffic. Next to us was a local man who was listening to music in his car. It was rather loud and the windows were down. What did I hear? Alan Jackson.
- Country, California, has a challenge for you. Say something nice about Rascal Flatts.
- Jessica Simpson is being featured in ADs for ABC’s “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night To Rock.”
“I’ve gone back to my roots and come on over to country music,” Jessica says. “I just couldn’t be more thrilled for ‘Come On Over’ to be a part of this amazing night of country music.”
Simpson will not, however, actually appear in the upcoming ABC special.
- The Tennessean’s Beverly Keel interviews Sugarland about their songwriting process:
Bush: One of the things you do in this process is, you say, “What’s the emotional truth to this topic we’re writing (about)? What are you trying to really say?” Some things you do because they just feel good; some things you do because they are difficult. As Jennifer says a lot, we’re using a toothbrush to clean the archeological dig.
- The always entertaining and usually enlightening Bob Lefsetz wrote a long post on the his blog about Carrie Underwood’s “You Won’t Find This.” He loves the track, but some of his comments make me think he’s relatively out of touch with country music.
Most listeners have no idea what it takes to write a song like “You Won’t Find This” and get it on a Carrie Underwood album. But, when they hear it, they understand.
Amazing that such a process can result in such truth. But maybe that’s country. Whereas rap was the word of truth, today country is where you go for honesty. (Emphasis added.)

That blue shirt that Jo Don wore that one time would look really good on me.
Does that count?

That was a damn nice response by Ms. Cash. She knows what she’s doing. On the other hand, the stupid public statement by John Rich about the Senior Cash’s political choices is an excellent example of what to watch for when determining if a ‘personality’ has anything worth hearing.
It was a stupid comment. People working above their pay grades make them often. Our own dear President provides frequent further examples.

Jessica Simpson is being featured in ADs for ABC’s “CMA Music Festival…
I swear, I read this sentence six times and then went to the original source to try and figure out what “AD” stood for. Adult Dyslexics? Attention Deficits? Adult Dummies?
With Jessica’s name attached, my mind definitely went in a certain direction.

Woooo! Thanks!
Any celebrity that tells you their view of something should be ignored. Keep it to yourself chief!

With Jessica’s name attached, my mind went in a certain direction too. Not AD’s. Just D’s. (Bad Trailer!) One of my hometown stations is giving away tickets to the Grand Old Opry on the night of Ms. Romo’s debut. I had the thought that many of Nashville’s cemeteries will be rumbling with all the legends rolling over in their respective graves that night.

I always thought Petty’s “walls” was an underrated track in his catalog..leave it to ol’ mug-shot himself to give that song its due credit!!
August 19, 2008 at 7:31 pm Permalink
I really like “Walls” too.

Here’s something you Nashville based guys will like maybe as much as Jessica’s boobs! (lol) (From AllAboutCountry.com)
“Capitol Records Announces the “Dungan Takes Demonbreun Pub Crawl # 2″. It Happens September 18th, 2008 With Free Live Performances From Capitol Label Artists Trace Adkins, Luke Bryan & Emily West.
Here they go again! The “Capitol Pub Crawl – Dungan Takes Demonbreun 2″, a FREE music event at the clubs on Demonbreun Street near Music Row, takes place on Thursday, September 18th. Live performances from Capitol Records Nashville artists Luke Bryan and Emily West will take place in popular Demonbreun hotspots “The Tin Roof” and “Dan McGuinness”, while Darius Rucker and Trace Adkins will literally take their music to the streets, performing on a stage set up at one end of the closed-off Nashville thoroughfare.
The “Capitol Pub Crawl – Dungan Takes Demonbreun” is playfully named for the label’s charismatic CEO/President, Mike Dungan and was widely considered a rousing success last year. Said Dungan: “It’s the last big blow-out of the summer, and it’s the only free music we approve of on Music Row! We’ll see ya there!”"
So how many of you 9513er’s plan on getting plastered at this event? (lol)

I may have to plan on going to that pub crawl.

Rascal’s “I’m Moving On” was good.. that’s all I got.

Yeah, because if there’s anyone who would have supported John McCain, it’s the man that wrote I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down/livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town/I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime/but is there because he’s a victim of the times.
In other words, STFU, John Rich, support McCain all you want (he sucks as much as your music does, not coincidentally) but let’s all try to remember that country music USED to be the music of the poor, oppressed, down-trodden, and forgotten, the working poor before there was such a term. You know? The exact people the Republican party has forgotten about?
PS: Can y’all cover some of Toby Keith’s latest love affair with being a giant old racist?
August 20, 2008 at 2:29 am Permalink
Namely this:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/07/30/toby-keith-obama-white/
“Even though the black society would pull for [Obama], I still think that they think in the back of their mind that the only reason that he is in is because he talks, acts and carries himself as a Caucasian.”
August 20, 2008 at 3:43 am Permalink
Why does that statement make Keith a racist?
August 20, 2008 at 6:15 am Permalink
“whereas rap was the word of truth, today country is where you go for honesty”….and end up finding rascal flatts.
August 20, 2008 at 7:55 am Permalink
Dang! The pub crawl is the week before I go to Nashville. I’ll be there the whole next week. Sigh. Yeah, I heard from some friends that it was a blast last year. We usually stay in that Comfort Inn accross from the Tin Roof, so that would be the perfect place to catch all the action.
August 20, 2008 at 8:32 am Permalink
Dylan: Because it implies that black people want a white leader. And of course because it implies that Toby Keith is the voice of the black voter.
August 20, 2008 at 9:33 am Permalink
that pub crawl is the only thing that would make me ever want to stay at that smelly comfort inn across from the tin roof ever again….
August 20, 2008 at 9:48 am Permalink
We stay there all the time Kelly and have always had a pleasant stay.
August 20, 2008 at 9:54 am Permalink
Stormy, I think his comment implies that Obama is a presidential candidate in general because “he carries himself like a Caucasian”, which may be valid point only insomuch as can you picture someone like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton getting enough mainstream support to be a major party candidate? It says nothing about black people wanting a white leader.
Toby could have gone without speaking for “black society” (he coulda phrased that better) but his sentiment is something that I heard quite a bit from fellow faculty members while teaching at an African American high school last year. Basically, Obama is “black” to African Americans, and “white” to most of the general public, which is sad that that delineation is still made, but it IS still in many people’s minds.

wow, thats a shocker paula. I am in the hotel business and i can overlook many things, cuz i understand how the operation works and things that can happen. there were several areas of failure for me, maybe it was just a bad week for them…
August 20, 2008 at 10:48 am Permalink
Besides purporting to speak for a race he’s not a part of, Keith’s comment rankled because it assumes that being sophisticated and well-spoken are exclusively “white” qualities. I was surprised he didn’t get in more trouble, actually.

Was it a long time ago Kelly? They were remodling when we were there about 18-24 months ago and it was a little messy just from the construction. But we stayed there in April and it was great. We’ll be staying there in Sept as well. I’ll let you know how it goes.
August 20, 2008 at 11:20 am Permalink
shoot, it was last week!
August 20, 2008 at 3:05 pm Permalink
I think Stephen H.’s reading of Toby’s statement is correct… but I also think it’s highly doubtful anyone black gives a damn about anything he says or sings. So anyone trying to read too much political import into anything Toby is talking about these days is stretching for a story to write.
