Bandcamp - On the passing of Harley Allen, Jon Weisberger writes:
Nashville’s a songwriting town, and Harley Allen was a world-class songwriter, so a lot will be written about that in days to come. But before — and while — he was writing the hits, Harley was a singer, one of nearly unparalleled beauty and sadness. By the time he was in his late teens and singing with his brothers in the hillbilly bars of Dayton, Ohio, he had a reedy, mournful tenor voice that seemed to always curl a phrase just a moment before you thought it might, or rise just a bit higher than you thought it could. And whichever of a dozen different ways he’d surprise you as a singer, it always turned out to be exactly the right one to make you feel the same longing, the same emptiness, the same self-mocking yet utterly serious sense of despair that seemed to be haunting him.
- More on Allen from Peter Cooper.

R.I.P. for Mel. A unique voice that was much underappreciated.
Who couldn’t have seen the CIA solo thing coming? I will miss Cherryholmes tremendously. Unbelievably talented entertainers.
Kudo’s to Craig Morgan. He is one of the good guys. I would assume he is in early career sunset due to the label he is joining; however hope he has continued success.
As for Blake Shleton, a very opaque and bland song. Sounds like he made it for modern pop/country radio. Oh, wait a minute, he did. What was I thinkin’.

Listened to the entire Alison Krauss and Union Station album on NPR and it is fantastic. I am so excited to pick this one up. Totally worth the wait.

Ms. Krauss, you’re not supposed to post about your own CD.

Interested to see how that Craig Campbell does. We’ve been spinning “Family Man” for awhile now, and it is really good! Hoping the album takes off for him!!

I’ll miss hearing Mel singing “Stand Up” and “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On” on the Opry. R.I.P. Mel.
Wow, Harley Allen was the same age as me! That does it, I’m scheduling a check up. Harley was a very gifted songwriter and I’m sorry to read of his premature death due to cancer. The only time I ever saw him perform (apart from YouTube) was on the special Grand Ole Opry show featuring the artists and songs from the “Livin’, Lovin’, Losin’” Louvin Brothers tribute album. His vocals were more of a “high, mournful sound” with a haunting quality as Jon mentioned.
Its good to see that Cia Leigh Cherryholmes is ready to strike out on her own. I wish her well and will be interested to hear what her first album sounds like.
Music City Roots Alert! Tonight’s MCR show will be a Nature Conservancy special and will be featuring relatively unknown artists such as: Mojo Gurus, Blue Mother Tupelo, Frank Solivan & The Dirty Kitchen, Brian Wright, & Allen Thompson. These shows make me apprecaiate the bluegrass focused MCR shows even more than I already do! (lol)
