Still, this did not matter to the small but loyal audience as they rewarded him with numerous standing ovations.

Favorite country song about farming life: Sarah Johns “Big Love In a Small Town”. We’ve got a diesel dually, twenty acres out in the boonies, smack dab in the midlle is a little house. Raisin’ beans and babies, what more could you want for once you’ve found, big love in a small town…..

Yehhhhhhhh Dierks.

Eddie Montgomery just lives a county over. We have ice an inch thick on the trees that have broken limbs and trees all over. Snow on top of the ice as well with snow predicted for Monday/Tuesday.
My backyard looks like a Tornado went through it. I’m going to need someone with a large truck and chainsaw once the ice melts to clear it out.
Over 600,000 residents in Ky are still without power. This is the biggest outage ever. Also shortages all over. There is no gas in my town due to people hogging for generators and gas trucks not able to get in. Food/water shortages too. I teach at the high school and school has been out all week. I am a very lucky person as my heat didn’t go out this time. Cable was out so I caught up on reading. I know we aren’t the only ones. From Oklahoma through West Virginia, it was bad. My parents in Indiana got 11 inches of snow. We would trade 11 inches of snow anyday..for all this ice.

Well, listening to Dierks’ new album and reading about Neko Case’s makes me super-excited to buy them both! Dierks’ album as great energy, while Neko’s sounds just weird enough for me.
Also on album releases, according to the SHeDAISY widget on Lyric Street’s website, SHeDAISY’s new album comes out Feb. 10th. Weird, huh?

So John Rich/WB have given up on “Another You” and instead shipped “Shuttin’ Detroit Down” to country radio and in the tradition of classic country songs, the song speaks to and about the working man. Also the melody is traditional minded and country, not masked country-pop.

Favorite farming song… probably “The Rain Came Down,” though I do really like “Cafe on the Corner.”
January 30, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Matt,
I noticed that also. As much as I sometimes despite JR, I think it was the right move and I actually appreciate the song.
January 30, 2009 at 1:16 pm
As much as I sometimes despise John Rich, that should say.
January 30, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Zach,
It’s the song that will sell because there’s truth to it and it’s not seemingly manufactured just to stir emotions in people.

One good farming song that comes to mind is “Five Generations of Rock County Wilsons,” which was written by John Scott Sherrill, and there’s good versions by John Anderson and Tim Hensley. It captures the heartbreak of the end of a family farm about as well as anything I’ve heard. Another good one is “Thirty Years of Farming,” by Fred Eaglesmith, that some bluegrassers have covered.
January 30, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Actually, Doug Supernaw’s version of “Five Generations” is superior, in my opinion.
January 30, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Agree with Jim. Supernaw’s version is great.

I’m pretty disappointed in the new Dierks Bentley record. I was expecting more from an album that took two years to create.

I’m not liking Dierks album.

Can somebody tell me what kind of plug-ins or other software I need to make MySpace work? Everybody says it’s such a great resource for listening to music, especially from lesser-known artists, but I can never get that player section of the MySpace pages that have the songs to show up, no matter what browser I use.
January 30, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Drew, I believe you have to have Java scripting enabled and some “internet security/firewall” programs may disable it. I use the Firefox web browser and have no problems when my Java script options are enabled. If you don’t already use Firefox its worth the free download as its less prone to security issues than Internet Explorer.
January 30, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Actually, the MySpace player will play fine without JavaScript, but you need to have the Flash plugin installed. You can get it over on the Adobe site. I don’t know why you’d be having problems if you can watch YouTube videos, though.
January 30, 2009 at 6:06 pm
Thanks for the info Brady.

I’ve been hugely disappointed in dang near everything Dierks has done since “Don’t Leave Me In Love”. He started on top of a true country mountain and fell off into a commercial chasm to garner big success when he signed with a major label. Can’t say I blame him though. Also, being married may have taken some of the edge off….

Oh no here comes Rick’s rant on Brett Beavers…
January 30, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Nope, I left Brett out this time. Brett and Carrie Underwood should work together so I only have to bag on them once per thread! (lol)
Gloriana, the latest “Little Big Town” clone group, will be the opening act at all of Taylor Swift’s headlining shows she has booked thus far this year! Talk about a coup for a new group trying to get established, well at least with screamin’ tweeny’s that is. I would surmise Taylor has a “crush” on one of the “cute boys” in the band and wants to spend her time on the road with her new “Romeo”. Can a “prom date” be far behind? Well, it worked for Chuck Wicks and Julianne Hough….

Neko mentions filling her new barn with all the pianos she could get for free and using them to create a piano orchestra for her album on her EPK.
My favorite farming song is James House’s Hard Times for an Honest Man.
January 30, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Other fun Middle Cyclone fact:
Don’t Forget Me is a Henry Neilsson cover.
January 30, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Rick,
Gloriana is a band that is backed by Matt Serletic, the producer/manager of Matchbox 20. I think he’s got more than enough credibility to get their band the 15-20 minute open slot on her tour.

I’m feeling a bit lukewarm with DB’s upcoming project. I always loved his slow/melodic songs, but it seems like this one’s full of up-tempo, have fun while I got the music going type. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, but it seems that he’s missing his mark a bit… :( BUT…it’s just a first listen, when the album comes out Tues, I’ll bear myself an open/fresh mind.

If anyone is interested, it seems Bentley’s new album (along with a bonus track that is quite good) has also been added to Rhapsody a couple days early.
I dont think Dierks’ new album is great, but I also dont think it’s bad. It’s a solid, mainstream country album that shows some really good songwriting (I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes, Better Believer) and some very generic songs that were included for no other reason than they make for decent live songs (Sideways, Here She Comes).
I dont think Dierks is ever gonna live up to the creative hype or the greatness of his first two albums (Dont Leave Me In Love, his debut, self-titled album), but I also think he is a very good mainstream Country artist. By that I mean, is he ever gonna be mistaken for Jamey Johnson or Chris Knight? Nope, but compared to the Chesney’s and Adkins of the mainstream country world he is pretty damn good.
