MySpace Artist Of The Week: Johnny Cooper

Brody Vercher | January 29th, 2007 Email Share

Johnny Cooper By now everyone who reads this blog has heard of Johnny Cooper, he was one of the artists participating in the iPod contest. We’ve been wanting to feature him as our MySpace Artist of the Week for a while, but have been holding off so we could include an interview. Previously we just wrote about the MySpace artists based on the information we found on their profiles and websites, but we felt like an interview would help you get to know more about the artists and their personalties. Johnny Cooper just happens to be the first one that we interviewed and hopefully more will come in the future.

Without further adieu, the interview with our country rocker friend:

Your MySpace profile lists a number of inspirations, but who would you say had the biggest influence on your music?
There’s just way too many! My family definitely helped by giving me all different kinds of music to listen to as I grew up but it was a combination of that and seeing Cody Canada from CCR rocking!

Where do you hope to go with your music career?
EVERYWHERE!!! HAHA I’m in for the long haul I just love to play music! There’s enough cats out there that are too worried about being famous by next week so I’ll leave that to them and I’m just goin’ to have fun doing what I love to do!

What was it like to perform with some of the biggest names in the Texas music scene?
It’s great!!! The whole scene is like one big family! We all love the same music and since we are all out doing our own thing everybody looks forward to seeing each other when we can!

How do you find and choose the songs you play, or do you write your own songs?
Yes I write or co-write all my songs but it’s always cool to bring back a cool old cover song that you always liked!

What part of traveling from city to city do you find the most satisfying/enjoyable?
The unique food stops hahaha there are some interesting places.

What part do you get tired of?
Not getting to sleep on your own bed but other than that it’s not that bad.

What is the craziest thing that has ever happened at one of your shows?
One time a fight broke out in the back of this bar we were playing at and these guys got so mad that they ripped the urinals off the wall, it was crazy! They shut the whole bar down early that night and it was’nt even 12:30 yet.

As an aspiring guitar player myself (extreme beginner), are there any tips you could give me to speed up my learning time, or is this one of those “practice makes perfect” kind of things?
LEARN YOUR SCALES AFTER YOUR COMFORTABLE WITH THOSE EVERYTHING ELSE MAKES SENSE!

What is one thing about you that most people don’t know?
That I have super powers hahaha.

A lot of the artists we’ve seen perform like to keep some ice cold beer on stage while they perform as well as take drinks that fans have bought them. Not being able to legally drink, do you ever feel any pressure?
No, not at all! I graduated high school, sure I went to parties but drinking is not my thing so it does’nt bother me.

I’m sure all the girls are wanting to know, are you single, or happily taken at the moment?
Haha single.

What is your favorite venue to perform at?
Iron Horse Pub or the Wormy Dog Saloon.

A lot of the shows on your schedule are in OK and north Texas, do you ever plan to do any shows in South Texas?
Yes we do, not that many people are familiar with us yet further south but with help from people like you we hopefully will be heading that way more often!

And lastly, is there anything you would like to say to the fans out there reading this?
THANK YALL SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT AND YALL ARE THE ONES THAT KEEP US GOING!!!

Be sure to drop by Johnny’s MySpace and check out some of his music. We’ll keep you guys updated if he ever comes our way for a live show.

I love how focused this guy is on family; it’s good to see that it’s important to him, since the family has gotten so under sold (”") in recent years! Kudos!

My cousin who is OLD-ER like me saw Johhny at the
“RED DIRT” Documentary at Cameron University over a year ago. He saw lots of other artists also. It was Johhny’s CD that he bought (and Stony LaRue’s) and told us to “GO SEE HIM if you get a chance – he’s awesome!” My cousin wouldn’t say that about just anyone as a Musician himself! My teen daughter,
just younger than Johnny, went to Billy Bob’s TX last Dec. 2007 and both she and I have loved him ever since. The entire Band and Staff (Derek) are awesome and so down to earth! AWESOME personalities not JUST the music! YES! The whole package does get you addicted. My daughter’s twin brother went with us to see him in January 2008 and is a new fan of Johnny’s (& Derek’s)too. My cousin is on a committee in my hometown of Elgin, OK (a very small town near Lawton) that just booked Johnny and his band to play at their annual Celebration! We will definatly be there! They are beyond COOL!
