Mundo Earwood Found
Back in mid-December, I asked our readers to help us find out what happened to Mundo Earwood. I had searched all over the internet and found scant little information. Well, the mystery has been solved. A reader by the name of Bruce wrote in, telling us that he had one of Mundo’s albums. I have yet to hear the album, but I can’t wait. Then today, one of Mundo’s second cousins wrote in and gave us some interesting information about Mundo. Here’s what he had to say:
Mundo is my second cousin. Last I heard he was living in the Humble, TX area. His given name is Raymond. Mundo is a slang and is short for the Mexican name Raymundo (Raymond). Immigrants working on the southwest Texas Earwood ranch called him Mundo and the nickname stuck.
So there you have it, Mundo’s album has been found and we even heard from his second cousin.

[...] A reader by the name of Bruce helped us find the Mundo Earwood album that we were looking for and now he needs our help finding a lost album of his own. Bruce is searching for an album by another Western Swing artist by the name of Curtis Potter. This guy definitely knows how to sing country music, so I emphatically recommend that you go listen to some of his songs if you haven’t heard him. Even though Curtis Potter is still actively recording (he released an album in 2006), an album called Texas Proud that he recorded seems to have gone missing. Bruce tells us that the only reason he knows this particular album exists is because he has the cassette. Unfortunately, he liked the tape so much that he wore it out playing it too much and is left with the nonfunctional shell. That right there is a pretty convincing testimonial of how good Curtis really is. [...]

Does anyone here watch LOST? Because I think they found a copy of a Mundo record down below when they descended into the hatch.

I’m an avid LOST fan myself, so I busted out my season 2 DVD’s to check this out, but unfortunately, I didn’t see any mention of Mundo Earwood. In the 3rd episode of disc 3, Charlie and Hurley are looking through some old LPs, but no Mundo. Maybe it was a different episode.

I was Mundo’s “girl singer” way back in the 70’s. He was a great singer and a pretty darn good songwriter too. I taught him to sing harmony on a road trip to a gig in south Texas in a car with no A/C. It was a riot!
I really liked Behind Blue Eyes but Lonesome as a Cowboy was my all time favorite!

I have meet Mundo several times He knows my Dad.I have not seen him though for over 10 years,I seen him play at a club ,he even played one of my favorite songs, pyramid of cans.He gave my Dad a cassette He then gave it to Me I’m sad to say it messed up,He was a great singer,anyone that has not heard him sing should.He is as good as anyone.

I have searched for years to try to find a copy of “You’re in love with the wrong man”. It should have been a classic, and Mundo Earwood had the talent to sing it right.
I am a huge country music fan; that song is definitely in the top 10!

Mundo’s cousin was partly right. Mundo is slang and kinda short for Ramundo (Raymond).
He was the only child his mother Hazel was ever going to have, so he was her whole world. The Spanish word for world is MUNDO. His dad, Darrell, worked all over North and South America in the insulation business, so Spanish was a necessity for him.
I’ve known Mundo probably longer than that second cousin has been alive, since 1957 when I moved into the house next door to his. I was four, he was five, I think. He moved out to the country along about second grade and I stayed in town.
Our paths last crossed at the Western Palms in CCTX twenty some years ago, and the time before was probably twenty years before that. Damn. It looks like such a long time when it’s written down. It is. Still, with all that time gone by, as soon as our eyes met, he knew me by name.
I’d like to see the man again. It would be good to see him play a set or two, maybe sit in for a tune or two. I haven’t played music sober since I was a kid.
Maybe he checks this site, maybe I’ll hear from him.

Damn!!! I think of Mundo quite a bit!! I worked at the 16th Street Station in HUntsville, Tx in the mid-late 70s. My daughter is named Angelene, one of the best of Mundo’s singles at the time.
Last time I saw him was at the Armadillo Ballroom in Brazoria. We3 did “sip” a little Tequila that evening..
I do have a LOT of stories about the 16th Street Station, also. Anyone ever hire Ace in thew Hole band for $200 a night – with their “new” green eyed singer in the 70’s? I did…

Back in the mid 70’s I was in San Dieago Ca and a local radio station (KSUN) had a live show on Saturday nights and I remember Mundo coming and playing live for the radio station.
I have several pictures of him at the show.
I wood love to here his music again.

I knew Mundo back in the 70’s also. Grew up knowing him and his mom, Hazel! Spent lots of time with him at Garner State Park (he was just a buddy from good ole Tuloso-Midway, H.s.)….in fact he still has a couple of records on the jukebox in the Pavilion in Garner! I saw them last summer when we were there. Actually the song “Behind Blue Eyes”, he sang for us at Garner before he ever cut the single to get our reaction to the song and needless to say we ALL fell in love with the song. He is an AWESOME singer and his band “West of the Pecos” was incredible!! Hello to J.R., Paul and Bobby. If anyone knows if he still plays around town please post it!! Was thinking about him not too long ago. Last I heard He and his wife Jeannie lived somewhere around Houston. Would love to see him sing again!!

I would also love to get copies of his music. It seems like years ago I heard the title of a song somthing like “I’d leave him for me if I was you,” and I think the name was Mundo Earwood. I never heard the song but the title has stuck in my mind for years. I wonder what he is up to now? Surely someone as talented as he must have been is still singing and playing somewhere?

I have a very unusual single and cannot find anything about it. It is by Mundo Earwood. One side is “all my own” and the other is “breaking up is hard to do”…on Primero Record label. I cannot find the year this was recorded. Help?

During the ’70’s & ’80’s I practiced law in Houston, Tx, and was honored to represent Mundo Earwood and his band. He still performs around Houston. The song “Angela” was written for his new-born daughter. He was seventeen when he recorded “Behind Blue Eyes” and was offered a contract with RCA, but somebody talked him out of it. What a loss!
He wrote a song recorded in an album by willie Nelson and Mel Tillis called “Texas Om a Saturday Night.” They knock the hell out of it.

I used to book dates on Mundo and promote his records. He was on True Records in Nashville while I was the label President. He was on a number of different labels over the years. Most of his chart hits were on GMC Records. He was one of the most talented singer songwriters I ever met in the business. He could have been a Super Star. Turning down RCA was a mistake. He had some bad personal management who took the quick dollar instead of the long term career. I know. I was there in the middle of it. Even moved to Houston several times to work exclusively with Mundo. I have some of his singles and albums. If you look at his 1977 True Records album you’ll see that I was the Art Director for it & label President. What a talent he was, and hopefully still is. Hope he never quit writing songs. He’s great.

I played fiddle in the West of the Pecos Band with Mundo in the early 80’s . We traveled in a 1958 Gold Eagle tour bus ,Mundo is by far , the nicest & easiest Singer/Songwriter that i have ever worked for , he truly is a class act . Keith Junot

For those that know Mundo, please try and convince him to re-release his songs on CD or iTunes or release a greatest hits album or something! As for those that have his music, all though I hate asking for a copy where Mr. Earwood would not get money, but years of not hearing the songs have let me forget the words and I am left with only being able to hum the tunes, so how about emailing me an mp3 or burning me a CD of the songs. I have been looking for a copy of many of his songs for years now, especially “behind blue eyes” and “you’re in love with the wrong man.” I’ve found some pricey LPs, but I don’t have the equipment to play records anymore. I’m getting desperate!

I met Mundo on his Dads ranch on a Thanksgiving week-end a long time ago.I was hunting with a friend Mark L. and his dad told us the landowners son was going to hunt with us. Next morning we hear a roar coming down the ranch road and see a big bus coming thru the pasture only Mundo Earwood would go deer hunting in a tour bus.As i remember this was the first time he was playing for his home town and the first we had heard him play. What a week-end to remember. Mundo, his mom and his dad where some of the best people I have ever met.Friends for life.When Mondo played in Victoria him and the band West of the Pacos would stay at my house; some party it was. Mundo to me is still one of the best singer/songwriters there is. Wish he would get back on the road but time takes its toll. Talked to Mundo today and may get him to play my sons wedding. Can’t wait till June. Best of luck Mundo and look forward to seeing you soon.

I’m reading a lot about Mundo Earwood, but I’m not hearing any music! I only had one album by him and I wore it out before it could be converted to CD. My favorite cut was “Lilacs and Fire”. Doesn’t somebody know somebody who could get Mr. Earwood’s music to our ears??? And while they are at it, how about including Jud Strunk’s music! I can’t find his tunes anywhere either…

Mundo is busy with his business these days down in Houston. Between that and his two daughters his head is kept spinning. We see him at Thanksgiving, wedings, and occasionaly other holidays. His voice is still excellent and he would be really pleased with this much interest in his music.

I received a CD of 24 of Mundos songs today from a mutaul friend, I am gonna cut 3-5 song off of it next month for my debut CD so stay tuned!! He is a great song writer and a wonderful vocalist!!

I sure liked reading all the messages about Mundo. It made me ‘flashback’ to the 70’s, the 15th Street and the many many people we had there. I even caught myself ’singing’ “You’re In Love With The Wrong Man” and wanting to download the songs I have. I’ll let ya know when I do….

I have been looking for the singer of ‘I fooled around and fell in love’ for many years and I just found it tonight and now I would love it if someone could help me out. For awhile, I thought it was Mel Tillis. I heard the song on the radio in 1979 and I recorded from the radio and then lost the recording. I cannot beleive I now know the original singer. He should be making more songs. What a great singer.

I was a student at Sam Houston State during the Fall of ‘74. Several of us would drive to the Rising Sun (either in Trinity or Riverside, I forget which) and hear him play almost every Thursday night. Just the smoothest, purest voice ever to sing a country song. Angeline, Behind Blue Eyes, In Love with Wrong Man … I have to believe all would be golden today!

Hello I ahve been looking for Mundo Earwood forever and a day. He is a class act I have spent many of nights watching and listen to the most purest voice and true Country music ever. I am a bassist living in the Magnolia/Tomball area of Texas. I began playing with my progressive metal band Life Stage about 6 months ago now… and my very first gig was playing for Ross’ (my guitarist) dad’s (who has his own country band and has for many years) party where I was introduced to Mundo. I later found that Mundo still performs often around here, and when he does he is backed by “Suthern Comfort”, Ross’ father’s country band and the band I’m currently gigging with. So, to make a long vague story short- I have played gigs recently with Mundo, he is alive and well, still writing and recording music, and if you want to see him perform look up his myspace and hopefully we’ll see you at our next show.

I would love to know where to get my hands on a CD of Mundo’s music. I loved dancing to his music back in the ’70’s & ’80’s. He was quite talented and such a nice man. He was always very kind to his fans and would sign autographs as long as they would stand in line. I have thought about him numerous times over the years. I’m glad that he’s still doing well and still singing.

I think “The Things I’d Do for You” is one of the finest country music songs ever recorded. Would love to have the opportunity to buy a CD of Mr. Earwood’s albums…or better yet, hear some new recordings. Thank you, sir, for an exceptional song I’ve never forgotten, even after 30 years.

Behind Blue Eyes is my favorite Mundo song.Please tell me where I can find his CD’s in or around the Houston or Conroe area. He is a great singer. I have only heard three of his songs,but I want to hear them all.

Mundo is alive and well. I see him every year in October at the Bluebonnet Youth Ranch Celebrity Golf Tournament and Show in Victoria, Texas.
