Montgomery Gentry – “Whattya Think About That”

Montgomery Gentry I dug the sweet intro to Montgomery Gentry’s latest single, “Whattya Think About That,” but, sadly, that’s the only redeeming quality this song has to offer. If they would have put it on a loop and released it as an instrumental, I would have enjoyed it more. With this single, Troy and Eddie have managed to follow a formula so predictable that Matt actually laid it out in his “Decline of Country Radio” article.

The lazy songwriting consisting of esoteric lists provides mindless blather to prop up a hook that thinks it is more clever than it actually is. The song’s title either undermines the message of not giving a damn, or it serves as more meaningless rhetoric. Either way, it sounds like a knockoff of “A Country Boy Can Survive,” but doesn’t exude the same confidence and attitude. Is nailing a sign to a tree to tell someone what you think really all that rebellious? Give me some beechnut and an old .45. The song even contains a single line reference to God and phrases like “blah blah blah” for the teenagers. Who exactly this is supposed to target, though, I don’t know. What you wind up with is a weak song pandering to radio for a few spins and background fodder for the casual listener.

Thumbs Down

Ok I have been a fan since the beginning with Hillbilly Shoes, all I can say to your review is it’s your opinion and your intitled to it. To MG fan’s this is another wonderful album…we all know that MG is not a big favorite of Country Music’s mainstream. Whenever I listen to Kenny Chesney I think all his stuff sounds the same….and I have to change the channel…but yet he sells those records…anyway My opinion is like yours we all have one…..

For people who don’t care about what people think, they really seem to care…don’t they?

Leeann — you’re right. The lyrics are contradictory. But what really bothers me is that MG acts as though not caring about what other people think is somehow a good thing. I’d call it inconsiderate, close-minded, and thickheaded.

Maybe what MG really want to say is “We shouldn’t live our lives more concerned about the thoughts of others than our own happiness.” If they said that, I would agree. But if that’s what they meant to say, they sure shouldn’t have said, “I don’t give a damn what other people think.”
