Miranda Lambert Slates Acoustic DVD; Randy Travis Prepares Duet Album with McGraw, Chesney and Underwood
- Miranda Lambert is scheduled to release a six-song acoustic performance DVD titled Revolution: Live By Candlelight on Oct. 12.
- Early next year, to celebrate his 25th year as a major-label artist, Randy Travis will release a new album of collaborations:
“I’ve been in the studio already quite a few times at this point,” he says, “and have recorded with Josh Turner, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson.”
The release will be a mix of old and new. For example, Travis says he recorded a new tune with Tim McGraw and did a medley and a new track with Jackson. Another collaborator is John Anderson. With Anderson, a friend for nearly 30 years, Travis redid his song “Diggin’ Up Bones.” “I didn’t know this,” Travis says, “but when it was written, there was actually a third verse to the song, and we added that on the record, and it’s hilarious.”
Underwood, too, is “gonna be in the studio with us,” he says. “She wants to do something old, and I don’t even know what we’re going to do yet.”
- That Nashville Sound and Country Universe both have contests to win Trace Adkins‘ new album Cowboy’s Back In Town.
- Corsicana, Texas, the birthplace of Billy Joe Shaver, plans to honor its famous son through the renaming of a portion of 15th Street and declaring Oct. 12 Billy Joe “Appreciation Day.”
- Guitarist-singer Kenny Edwards, who played an important role in launching Linda Ronstadt‘s career, passed away last Wednesday at the age of 64.
- While playing in Chicago last Thursday, the Zac Brown Band performed several new songs. Alison Bonaguro has the details:
[...] Brown did another new one he called “my favorite song we’ve ever written.” The selection, “Colder Weather,” is a solid country ballad about being born for leaving and having a gypsy soul to blame. Brown didn’t say why it was his favorite, but the fans seemed to echo his sentiment even though most were hearing it for the first time.
- Kenny Chesney previewed his new record for Billboard, discussing the 11 songs track by track. There’s no telling how the songs will turn out, but it has a nice lineup of songwriters.
- Jim Lauderdale commented on five records that inspire him in Sounds Country’s newest edition of Five Records.
- From Country California’s Fake News: Curb Records plans to release a Greatest Hits 4 album of all new material from Tim McGraw:
“These people are *%$&ing nuts, man. I thought Shelton [Hank Williams III] just had a burr in his saddle with all his complaining, but naw… Curb’s bat sh*t,” McGraw grumbled. “I mean, Clay Walker’s not even happy here! Clay Freaking Walker, who wouldn’t curse you if you took a leak on his kid’s puppy!”
- Jason Aldean‘s fourth studio album, My Kind of Party, is due Nov. 2.
- CMT has a couple of new videos:
- Country Universe’s countdown of the 400 greatest singles of the nineties inched closer to the top last Friday with numbers 75 through 51.
- Ryan Bingham‘s new album, Junky Star, won’t come until next week, but he’s already working on a new project — music for a film being developed by his wife, writer/director Anna Axster.
- The Boot premiered the new video for Bo Bice‘s song “You Take Yourself With You.”
- Country California: Quotable Country – 08/22/10 Edition
- Chris King is giving away his two EPs, Bexar County EP and This New Almanac EP, for free — not even an email address is required to download.
- In 1979, Rosanne Cash lost a guitar at the airport while honeymooning with Rodney Crowell. The guitar was a gift from Cash’s father and even had a handwritten note in its sound hole.
“Somewhere, someone has my guitar and knows damn well it belongs to me …”
And Cash expects that, someday, the guitar will be returned to her.
“If my dad, from his perch in the other world, wanted to do something really great for me, he might hasten its return. I’m sure he knows where it is by now.”
-
Band of Heathens performed “L.A. County Blues” in a recent video for Texas Music TV (performance starts at 2:18).

I can’t wait for the Randy Travis CD in 2011! Should be a lot of great songs on that one. Hopefully, it will give Travis a resurgence in popularity (and on the charts, too).

That Clay Walker joke in the Tim McGraw bit was hilarious!

I’m interested in the Travis album too.

The sad thing is you know that guitar is sitting in an airport luggage area somewhere is Nova Scotia….

It’s infuriating what Aldean chooses to promote to radio too often, but it seems once again his forthcoming album will nonetheless be replete with some quality album tracks from accomplished writers. It’s just a shame standouts like “Not Every Man Lives”, “I Believe In Ghosts” and “On My Highway” can’t represent his albums on the airwaves, and instead we’re force-fed violent amped-up maelstroms that are bogged down in tired “Hell yeah I’m country! You might even say I’m countrier than Thou!” themes (“My Kinda Party” actually sounds in-between two 3 Doors Down singles: “When I’m Gone” and “Let Me Go”)
Same can be said with Chesney. I’m trying not to let expectations dwell on my mind, but the songwriting roster is a positive sign for “Hemingway’s Whiskey”.
I agree “Colder Weather” is the Zac Brown Band’s finest song lyrically to date. If “Colder Weather” is any indication of the musical maturity of what’s offered on “You Get What You Give”, I will be one happy camper.

Not thrilled with some of Travis’ choices for duet partners.
August 23, 2010 at 1:47 pm
That’s ok, Razor, you’ll get to pick the duet partners when you make your record, just like Travis is choosing the ones for his. I would be surprised if you had the same taste in singing partners; wouldn’t you be surprised, too?
August 23, 2010 at 2:05 pm
That’s ok, Razor, you’ll get to pick the duet partners when you make your record, just like Travis is choosing the ones for his.
And he won’t be obligated to like my choices any mroe than I like his. Will you be equally obnoxious to him should he express an opinion?

RAZORX,
Don’t let Jon get to you. He is the resident bloviator with the bad hairdo.
August 23, 2010 at 2:25 pm
That’s an odd response to a simple opinion by Razor X, Jon.
August 23, 2010 at 3:35 pm
eyeroll to bloviator. I think Jon normally brings logic into conversations. No need for name calling.
Is Dead flowers going to be on Miranda Lambert acoustic cd?
August 23, 2010 at 5:10 pm
Troy said: “No need for name calling.” My response: “WTF are you talking about?!!!!!!!” (lol)
That Randy Travis dealie has assumed an instant high position on my personal “Who really gives a sh*t?” list! Congratulations Randy! In stark contrast that acoustic Miranda Lambert EP is instead something I actually wouldn’t mind listening to…
Wow, Jim Lauderdale’s album list wasn’t near as whacked out as I had anticipated! Usually “Americana” artists list dreadful crap by obscure artists no one else has ever heard of in the name of hipness and for the coolness factor. I guess Jim is too old for all that hipster malarky.
August 23, 2010 at 5:42 pm
@rick (so that people will know who im exactly talking about) i was talking to waynoe about saying that Jon is the resident bloviator thats why i said I thought he brough logic into conversation implying he isn’t pompus. I thought it was obvi who i was talking about since I said bloviator right before it. guess not..

When Travis did his “Heroes and Friends” duet album, way back when, he was the king of country and could pick anyone he wanted–from B.B. King to Clint Eastwood to a bunch of country legends.
My guess is that now his label is picking whoever they can get–and whoever they think will help Travis return to the radio–and that probably means artists who are PLAYED on the radio!
My own two cents: For history’s sake, there should be be a duet between Randy Travis and George Strait. I’d bet that if they let it be known that they were looking to do that, they’d get submissions from most of the top songwriters in Music City written just for them. Heck, they might even get a No. 1 record out of it.
August 23, 2010 at 6:14 pm
I’m sure Razor was specifically referring to Carrie. Tell me I’m wrong. You can’t? Oh.

KUT will be playing a live set with Dale Watson tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
August 23, 2010 at 7:20 pm
@Stephen (Mainstream): You’re partially correct.
August 23, 2010 at 8:17 pm
Troy,
I don’t think I am alone in my thinking. You are entitled to your opinion however.
August 23, 2010 at 10:15 pm
Sounds like Mr. Travis will have a great album coming out. Let’s hope it turns out okay!
Also heard that Jason Aldean will be doing a duet with Kelly Clarkson on his fourth album called “Don’t You Wanna Stay”. I listened to the demo, and the song is haunting, yet brilliant. It’d be a really big risk for Jason, but compared to his adequate efforts of “Crazy Town” and “My Kinda Party”, he needs it. Plus, the song would be much different for him, and it’s just the thing he needs to score another #1.
August 24, 2010 at 8:26 am
I am really looking forward to the Randy Travis duets album. He has been really successful with Carrie Underwood on their first collaboration, I Told you So, which was released last year.
Carrie took this Travis song to #1, made it a huge hit again, and really regenerated his career.
It shows the respect todays artists have for their peers that artists such as Carrie Underwood, the most talented and successful female artist today in country music today would be so interested in performing Randy Travis songs!
August 24, 2010 at 9:20 am
Jim, I’m pretty sure the Carrie/Randy version of I Told You So only peaked at #2 (not #1). Randy’s original version peaked at #1.
August 24, 2010 at 9:46 am
Jim, I’m pretty sure the Carrie/Randy version of I Told You So only peaked at #2 (not #1). Randy’s original version peaked at #1.
You’re both right…it was #1 on Mediabase and #2 on BIllboard so most of the countdown shows played it as a #1 for a week.
August 25, 2010 at 1:25 pm
Let’s hope the Miranda DVD is free of pop-ups advertising Taylor Swift. *rolls eyes*
August 25, 2010 at 4:32 pm
I hope so also Katie, that was very rude and low class of CMT. It was so annoying I had no choice but to change the channel, it was like every only a small portion of the show I enjoyed because of that.

Didn’t Billy Joe Shaver shoot some guy in the face recently? He’s getting a street named after him and an “Appreciation Day” in his honor? Wow, way to go Billy!LOL!
