Merle Haggard’s Cracker Barrel Exclusive Working Man’s Journey Now Available
- Merle Haggard released a Cracker Barrel exclusive yesterday. Titled Working Man’s Journey, the album consists of six new songs and six fan favorites.
- At this year’s CMA Music Festival Eric Church and his fan club will be planting 25 trees in Music City’s East Park. Afterwards Church will perform an acoustic set to thank his fans.
- Rick Trevino is returning to Nashville next month to perform his melding of country music and his Mexican heritage.
“If you listen to Marty Robbins, Buck Owens or Johnny Cash,” Rick notes, “you’ll hear Mexican-style sounds like gut-string guitar, polka beats, or the mariachi trumpets in Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire.’ You can even hear bolero rhythms in recent country hits by Brooks & Dunn and George Strait. Country music has always had a fascination with Latin music, so it seemed like a good opportunity to celebrate that at Schermerhorn Symphony Center.”
Trevino is playing tonight in Austin at Hill’s Cafe for part of the KVET Free Texas Music Series. I had plans to go, but game five of the Spurs is going to take precedence, sorry Rick.
- Rheta Grimsley Johnson is appalled that Willie Nelson didn’t receive preferential treatment for his recent court case in Louisiana.
I don’t smoke dope, never have, but then I’m no genius. You make certain allowances for geniuses. You treat them with deference and awe and great respect. You overlook a few things. (Willie was not driving, by the way.) Maybe you make them pay a fine, but you don’t treat them like everyone else.
- Jason Aldean on his hit song “Johnny Cash”:
“I actually recorded one of the demos for this song, probably four years ago,” Aldean explains. “We were going to put it on my first album, and about two weeks before we went in to start recording, the publishing company pulled it from us and told us they were going to give it to ‘a more established artist.’ So they ended up giving it to Tracy Byrd, and he put it on a greatest hits album [in 2005 for BNA Records]. But it never singled. It was the first thing we cut for this new album.”
From the same article, Aldean says “I’m a singer first and a songwriter second.” Later on he argues that playing acoustic isn’t his strong point…
- In an article about Lori McKenna, Peter Cooper says that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill made an appearance at one of her shows last week. Hill has recorded a couple of McKenna’s songs in the past and McGraw co-produced her upcoming album. Cooper thinks that McKenna’s music would do some good for the mainstream, writing that it’s not dissimilar from Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, or Steve Earle. Bring it on.
