Merle Haggard Returns to Stage Tonight After Layoff From Surgery
- When Merle Haggard plays at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace tonight and tomorrow, it’ll be his first performances since undergoing surgery for lung cancer. He says it’ll also be the first time in his life in which he hasn’t loosened up with tobacco or marijuana.
- We’re only two days into the new year and Los Angeles City Beat has a best albums of 2009 list. Among the picks are new albums from David Serby (Honky Tonk and Vine) and Mike Stinson (The Jukebox In Your Heart). Chris Morris provides a summary of both:
On Serby’s Honky Tonk and Vine: “…finds Serby and his terrific band the Sidewinders (led by his producer and guitarist Ed Tree) in superb form. Beyond primo country like “Get It in Gear,” “Permanent Position,” and “I Only Smoke When I’m Drinkin’,” he stretches comfortably into Southern soul (“Honky Tonk Affair”) and Tex-Mex (“For Cryin’ Out Loud”)
On Stinson’s The Jukebox In Your Heart: “…produced by Austin singer-guitarist Jesse Dayton and cut at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio. It shows off his magnificent writing, from saloon shakers like “No One to Drink With” and “I Will Live to Drink Again” to heart-tuggers like “Square With the World” and “Angel of the Evening.” What’re different here are the ace production values and Stinson’s full-bodied singing, which has never sounded finer on record.”
- Country music saw the second biggest percentage decline in 2008 with album sales plummeting 24 percent.
- Bobby Lynn Boatright, a member of the Texas Playboys, passed away on Sunday from cancer at the age of 69.
- Rodney Atkins is following in the footsteps of labelmate Tim McGraw with his own cologne, Atkins by Rodney Atkins, and duo Brooks & Dunn are not on speaking terms because of a text message. What’s happening to country music? It’s Country California’s new satire feature. I’m still waiting for the report about Guanabee Rich, a janitor who rescued unreleased master recordings of a 12-year old Taylor Swift from the trash. A prominent label executive, speaking under the cloak of anonymity, said Mr. Rich is in talks with several patrons of real country music to release a multi-CD box set. It will reportedly save the genre.
- More best of 2008 goodness from Twang Nation.
- Sunny Sweeney digs Carrie Underwood’s version of “How Great Thou Art.”
- Little Jimmy Dickens celebrated the 60th anniversary of his first performance on the Grand Ole Opry last November and continues his long tenure with a performance on this year’s first show, which is tonight.
- Susan Gibson might be best known as the writer behind the Dixie Chicks‘ “Wide Open Spaces,” but she records her own songs as well. Listen to and download a live recording of “Perfect World,” a song that Texas Music Matters considers a standout track from her new album, New Dog, Old Tricks.

Regarding Hag’s comment: “He says it’ll also be the first time in his life in which he hasn’t loosened up with tobacco or marijuana.” Guess we know where the lung cancer came from…..
The plummeting sales of country music have a lot to do with how shallow and mediocre so much of Top 40 mainstream country music has become. If you took out Taylor Swift’s and Carrie Underwood’s sales in 2008 you get a better picture of how sales have fallen off the cliff. File sharing and CD copy burning have had a huge impact, but the lack of quality of so much of the music is at the core of the problem.
First Sunny Sweeney announced she was working with Dierk’s Bentley’s producer Brett Beavers and now she’s praising Carrie Underwood’s vocal gymnastics. All this time she’s been spending in Nashville has not been a good thing and I fear she is being seduced by the dark side of the force. If Sunny ever starts trying to sing like Carrie, its over…

Thanks for the links. It’s hard to imagine how much worse a 12-year-old Taylor Swift would sound.

Rick,
Spending time in Nashville alone isn’t gonna get you to be ‘pop country.’ There’s no way Sunny could sing like CU, she’s got that honky tonk style. She may go the Lee Ann Womack route, but we’ll see. As for praising Carrie Underwood, many people have praised her live performances of classic songs. Hell, if country were like it used to be 20 or so years ago, she’d probably have a really good twangy record (w/no oversinging).

Question: What would you want to hear on Carrie’s 3rd album?
Carrie has one of the best voices in Country today. I wish for more well written songs..songs that reach the heart like “Just a Dream”. Also, a couple of acoustic numbers with her soft, lovely voice shining through. When she did “Do you Hear What I Hear” on the Opry, I thought..yes..there’s that wonderful voice coming through and she was even sick that night!
She can continue with her fun songs, her message ones..but with more insight and reason into that message. Most of the critics who said CR was good but not the best said it was due to writing (not Carrie). Carrie’s voice is what saved the album.
I guess to sum it up, songs that reach contemporary country ears and classic country ears as well. I admit..it’s a hard one, but one doable with a voice like hers. Remember “San Antonio Rose” ? She absolutely sang her heart out on that song at the Grammys.

Matt, Catherine Britt was a disciple of Hank Williams when she came to Nashville at 17 and wound up five years later with the Brett Beavers produced “Little Wildflower” album! Time spent in Nashville dealing with the tentacles of the Big Label Music Machine octopus will defile anyone! I hope this isn’t happeneing to Sunny Sweeney due to her ties to Big Machine. May Ashton Shepherd beware! (lol)
For anyone interested here is a new Aussie music video for the Angaleena Presley song “Knocked Up” that was also recorded by Heidi Newfield on her solo debut. I think the budget for this shoot was around $1,000 from the looks of it….

Since I have this thread to myself and I’m on an Aussie video bent, here’s one from a gal who is a finalist in this years Toyota Starmaker Talent Quest. Keith Urban won this very contest back in the early 90’s and many former winners went on to become top Australian country artists. The video in my post above is by Kirsty Lee Akers who won the Toyota Starmaker contest in 2007.
I guess you could consider Kaylah Anne Farmer to be sort of an Aussie equivalent to Taylor Swift prior to Taylor’s success, except Kaylah can sing….

Hey Rick,
Just because Sunny praises Carrie for HGTA doesn’t mean she wants to sing like her..LOL!
Sunny, please come back to Texas…we love you just the way you are!

Sunny is still SUNNY!! Any doubts, listen to her working tape of “Virginia Rain” on her myspace page!! Oh my God!!! I don’t care where she works as long as she sings like this. And it is just a raw tape.

Hey Rick,
Kirsty’s clip was actually done in one take and the low budget feel was intentional. We were going for a Joe Dirt feel which I’m sure you will agree was captured pretty well.

Neil, I was just making the low budget comment to prepare my fellow Yankees for Kirsty’s video. While small label and indie artists in Australia can get simple, low budget videos on CMC (sometimes anyway) the big label Nashville videos tend to be much more elaborate and that’s what American viewers are used to seeing on CMT and GAC. Since CMC features a lot of Yankee videos you know what I mean. On the other hand Catheine Britt’s “Little Wildflower” video shows the type of creativity Aussie video producers are capable of given a budget. Somehow I really think American audiences would enjoy Shea Fisher’s video for “Just the Excuse” and Peter Denahy’s “Sorta Dunno Nothing”. (lol)
Kirsty’s new video is a hoot and I hope it does well on CMC. The “one continuous take” nature of it is fun and Kirsty’s instant pregnancy is a kick. I’m still amazed that “Going To The Beach” wasn’t a much bigger success than it was, but it seems Kasey Chambers is the only Aussie country artist embraced by pop radio down under. A friend will be purchasing an autographed copy of “Better Days” for me at the Tamworth Festival and I look forward to hearing Kirsty interviewed by Johnno on Saturday Night Country.
January 3, 2009 at 11:51 am Permalink
Rick: Thanks for those two videos.
I enjoyed the first one immensely, low-budget feel and all, but the second one… *shudder*
“I’ve never felt like this / I’m new to this”
Rhyming couplets in which the second half serves only to restate the first using different words are a particular pet peeve of mine. Combine that with repetition of *the same exact word* to close out both halves, and the fact that since it’s in the chorus I have to listen to it *three times* and you have the recipe for my very own auditory purgatory.
Maybe it’s just me, and maybe it’s something that I wouldn’t have noticed if I’d listened on any other day.

Hey Confessor, are you named after Kaylan on “Legend of the Seeker”? The actress who portrays Kaylan, Bridget Regan, is a SoCal gal from LaJolla. That’s a fun show that I hope succeeds as an indie syndicated production.
As for the Aussie videos Kirsty Lee Akers has recorded mostly songs written by others, like Nashville-ian Angaleena Presley, while Kaylah Anne is a new artist who wrote the song in her video. I think Taylor Swift’s fans would like Kaylah’s video if they could handle vocals that stay on pitch…(lol)
How about a few other fun Aussie videos:
A totally Aussie song up for a Song of the Year Golden Guitar Award by Peter Denahy:
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_veIGGP1Uh4
Shea Fisher’s video with eye candy for both male and female viewers. Shea’s family lived in Texas while she was a teenager, so she is steeped in American country:
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7M_aarVf1c
Catherine Britt’s high tech “green screen” animated video for the title cut from her last RCA Nashville album produced by Brett Beavers prior to heading back to Australia. This song might have done better on Top 40 US country radio than her swan song “What I Did Last Night”. Oh well.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNmJTtAmMXs
Well, that’s enough (for now – lol).

Rick:
Nope, I got my name independently from the TV series and books on which it was based. I began using it during my young adult emo phase, and I grew out of it too late… I’d already registered the domain name on the ten-year plan. :-p
I’ll watch the rest of those videos when I’m well rested (and thus perhaps more willing to overlook my pet peeves).
Regarding Taylor Swift versus Kaylah Anne, if the off-key live performances I’ve heard from Taylor are representative of her talent, I think it’s illustrative of the way that auto-tuning technology has changed the nature of the music industry.
I’d use this space to complain about the importance of “image” and “beauty” in Nashville today, because (let’s face it) Taylor Swift is very pretty, except that she’s also quite a *good* songwriter… which, given your comparison of the two, is why I went to town on the amateur writing of the Kaylah Anne single.
(Which isn’t to say that Taylor doesn’t have some bad cuts; I found her song “Tim McGraw” *far* too melodramatic for my tastes… I kept waiting for the verse where she’s standing outside his door with a shotgun and an ultimatum.)
Take the opening AABCCB rhyme of Taylor’s “Our Song”, for example. While the song isn’t perfect (”talk real slow” instead of the more difficult to enunciate “low” has been discussed to death), I’ll submit that these lines are pretty damned close:
I was riding shotgun / With my hair undone
In the front seat of his car
He’s got a one-hand feel / On the steering wheel
The other on my heart
Notice how the twisting of expectations – the other hand isn’t ’round her shoulders or holding her own hand – services the song’s meaning as well as its rhyme structure. By the time the rhyme ends, she has firmly established both the physical and emotional setting of the song.
I wouldn’t call it (or anything she’s put out thus far) a legendary cut. I doubt people will discuss it in as much detail as I have thirty years from now. But the fact that she’s able to generate lyrics like that even on a semi-regular basis makes me hopeful that she someday will write a song or two that will stand the test of time.
And that’s all I have to say about Taylor Swift.

Thanks, Rick. I appreciate your input. I’m working with Brett Beavers b/c he’s a badass and we already recorded some really cool stuff! I bet you’ll like it!! As for Carrie’s singin…you’re deaf if you don’t think the girl can sing….I said nothing about her records…IT WAS A GOSPEL SHOW! they were singing gospel hymns and growing up in a baptist church, I have been exposed to my fair share of them…I was simply commentin on how great of a singer she was. If you have happened to have ever heard me sing, you would know that even if i tried i could never sound like that. that’s not what my voice does. So, thank you for putting down your opinion. Theres mine. Hope to see you at a show soon!

Holy crap, is that really you Sunny! YIKES! Looks like me and my big mouth has my foot firmly planted in it again. How embarrassing! I don’t expect the artists to read my assinine tirades here as I figure they have better things to do with their time. DOH!
As for Brett Beavers, I just vastly prefer Dierks Bentley’s pre-Brett Beavers sound on his debut “Don’t Leave Me In Love” album and I didn’t care for Catherine Britt’s “Little Wildflower” album that Brett produced. From my perspective I’d much rather see you working with Keith Stegall or Carl Jackson because I’d know the result would be real country.
Ummm, I better shut up before I dig myself a deeper hole here…..

Hey Jim, Brady, & Brody, do I score any 9513 Bonus Points for attracting Sunny Sweeney to post here even if it was only to rebuke my irreverence? Hmmm…
Sunny, If you ever book a gig in Los Angeles, I’ll be the first in line to purchase a ticket! (In fact anywhere within a 120 mile radius is cool , and that includes Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield). McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica would be a perfect venue as they’ve recently featured artists like Kasey Chambers, Carrie Rodriguez, and Slaid Cleaves, so you’d be perfect! All I ask is that you don’t cover any Carrie Underwood hits, while songs from Kitty Wells and Audrey Auld Mezera are highly desired….(lol)

This is the funniest thing I ever read!!! I always knew Sunny was the real thing, but I am even more impressed that she likes to know what people really think about her!! If she EVER gets nationwide exposure, the world will LOVE her!! Hope I live to see that!

I have to second Powell’s sentiment. The last thing I expected when I visited the site today was to read Sunny getting after Rick. That alone is enough to make me a fan of her (although the good music doesn’t hurt either). Awesome.

Carrie is amazing, both vocally and as a person. I will never understand why her haters continue to trash her so much. If you want to bash someone, pick someone who truly can’t sing, like Taylor. Carrie has one of the prettiest voices to come to Nashville in a long time.
Sunny, you rock too! lol I am starting to like Sunny now because the girl has gumption! I plan to check out some of her music now because she went out of her way to defend Carrie, especially here. For some reason, all the Carrie haters in the world come here to trash her… not sure why. She is a wonderful singer and person.

Off the top of my head, Alison Bonaguro, Caitlin Lynn, and Sunny have all dropped by and said something to Rick after he’s made a remark of some sort. So a Rick Smack is kinda like The 9513 terminology for having your foot in your mouth. “Rick Spam” is a candidate for the list, too…
Oh, and thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment, Sunny. I’ll have to try to catch your upcoming gig at The Saxon Pub.

i think it is an amazing choice
January 5, 2009 at 5:03 pm Permalink
I love that song! I am glad Carrie took a risk and released a more traditional song, even though it is a cover song of Randy Travis’s original song. Some of her fans are a little dissapointed about the choice as they wanted a more upbeat son next after Just a Dream, but most are thrilled.
Carrie brought me to country music, and now I love it. I am now a fan of many more traditional country artists like Alan Jackson, Brad, Dolly, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Alabama, etc, all because Carrie exposed me to the genre.
I am thrilled to see her try something more traditional, even if it won’t be a huge success on radio or in sales, etc. Maybe it will surprise us though.
Vince Gill sings backup to Carrie on that song, and their voices blend amazing together. I love it!

“Rick Smack” actually goes both ways. Much of what I post here is trash talk “smack” and the end result is that offended parties come back at me and give me a smack as well. See, it all balances out in a cosmic karma sort of way! (lol)
Well I may not have attracted Sunny to The 9513 as it sounds like she’s a regular reader, BUT it was my snarky comments that motivated her to post something so I still deserve a 9513 Brownie Point!
PS – Caitlin Lynn responded to me? I don’t remember that one. Damned mad cow disease. Back around 2003 Allison Moorer’s then husband Butch would post on her fan forum and he took umbrage at a few of my comments. Made me glad Nashville and LA are so far apart geographically.
