How did Carrie Underwood get her start?
Well, she grew up in a quaint little town in Oklahoma and was a singer ever since she was a baby. Carrie dropped out of high school, left home, and earned her stripes playing honkytonks and road houses throughout the Midwest and South. After years of empty rooms and tip jars, she moved to Nashville on a whim, where she worked as a waitress. One day, as closing time approached, there was just one customer left way in the back of the dining area. Carrie popped a quarter in the jukebox and began to sing along to her favorite Loretta Lynn song while mopping the cracked tile floors. Turns out, the man in the back happened to be famed producer Dann Huff. He recognized her talent, offered to help her get a record deal, and the rest is history. — Pierce

My favorite feature … you can’t make this stuff up, people.

Hah! I love it! Perhaps I should post my own email Q&A at some point… some of the questions I get are just downright insane!

A better question might be “how do I suck up to Taylor Swift and convince her to produce my album?”
The answer to THAT, my friends, is to purchase a large billboard near Music Row with a cartoon version of yourself shamelessly pleading in a desperate attempt for some Nashville attention.
I mean, duh.

Having grown up in a holler, I resent that remark. We couldn’t afford to make records and didn’t have any musical talent anyway, but … er … never mind.

I believe Relentless by Jason Aldean was released in late May of 2007… not March. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend by Miranda Lambert was released May 1st of the same year and I remember buying both of these albums, but Jason’s release was about three weeks behind Miranda Lambert’s.

The Carrie Underwood ones were the best! I might have respect for her if it was true! wonder if little Ms. vegetarian goody two shoes has even been in a bar….much less had to do a gig where there is the real threat of being thrown up on and no staff around to catch her when she faints…doubt it. she might actually have something interesting to talk about during all those important interviews she does if she had.

All of those were just priceless. You just can’t make this stuff up.

Shame…and black pumps.
Genius.

Carrie did a festival in Central Nebraska a few years back. Threw a fit and wouldnt come out of her trailer until showtime because of the rodeo going on. Then she made a remark about cattle ranchers and caused a ruckus. Lost a few fans over that deal.

Kelly, I’m disappointed. Shame goes with GREEN pumps, not black.
December 1, 2008 at 6:58 pm Permalink
Wow, seriously Nick? That is ridiculous.
December 1, 2008 at 7:34 pm Permalink
you sure that’s ridiculous, Drew? maybe that’s why she won’t do them anymore. heard things like that before.
Kelly And Stormy, I disagree with both of you. Shame goes with red high heels. green for jealously, red for shame (like blushing) and black for serious occasions like a reckless kelly concert.

I loved the false narrative of how Carrie Underwood got her start in the music industry, but it seems too details-oriented to be a complete fabrication. Is there a particular *real* artist whose biography Pierce used as a model in crafting it?

It sounded a little bit like Patsy Cline’s bio to me.

Bay: That would explain a certain Kellie Pickler song.
December 1, 2008 at 10:38 pm Permalink
Haha I liked the smart ass Carrie Underwood answer on how she got her start. I think there is actually a lot of hard feelings in Nashville about her because she had it so easy getting in. I know how you feel with the emails and I am sure you even get more. We get lyrics sent to us for random artists and people asking us to get them a record deal almost daily out of nowhere.
December 1, 2008 at 10:40 pm Permalink
Those ones on Carrie are priceless. That sounds like something she would do at that rodeo…
And that would explain that Kellie Pickler song. lol Thanks for the laughs :)

Stormy and Bay, I see both of your points, but remember the one thing that we all agree on is that SHAME should be the key component of attire for such an event…

Confessor,
I’ve read a lot of literature on Nashville/country music and just made a nice little compliation of various stories I’ve heard. So, no, not based on any artist in particular, but rather thousands of artists that never even get the opportunity that Carrie had fall into her lap.
December 2, 2008 at 12:59 pm Permalink
Yes, Kelly, shame and skinny jeans.
December 2, 2008 at 4:55 pm Permalink
i did that red high heels without realizing it! I wasn’t even thinking about that! lol
yes, Kelly the main component is SHAME. We won’t forget.
December 2, 2008 at 6:34 pm Permalink
I agree with those who think Carrie Underwear avoids rodeos due to “animal cruelty” issues. She likely became a vegetarian primarily for that reason and probably considers some rodeo events barbaric. As for not getting barfed on, remember she was a sorority girl and likely went to some frat house parties, so who knows….

Rick, you’re such a jerk! Where is the “beef” for any of these accusations?? Didn’t she grow up on a farm?

NorthTexas, you are obviously mistaking me for someone who gives a horse sh*t about anything Carrie Underwear says, does, or sings about. Carrie’s leading role in the “American Idolization” of mainstream country music borders on the criminal…
PS – When Taylor Swift comes to California the first place she heads to is typically an “In N’ Out Burger” fast food outlet. Now which artist has more in commomn with most of her fan base? Crikey….
December 2, 2008 at 10:11 pm Permalink
Well, with the constant “Carrie Underwear” comments I’d say you are obsessed with her.

NT, that explained nothing. I don’t trust “people” when they say stuff like that on behalf of an artist. its usually damage control. Carrie said nothing herself, and its a simple fact she didn’t show and gave no explanation. she didn’t assure rodeo folks she doesn’t judge their lifestyle. She didn’t say that their views don’t represent hers. that was just a denial that SHARK had anything to do with her decision. I’m still suspicious.

I really like Taylor Swift’s style and she writes great songs. I also think the guy who rented the billboard came up with a crazy idea that just might work… AND if you go to his myspace, which I did, you can’t argue… the guy has loads of talent! I am now a Ryan Laird fan too.
