Live Blog: Nashville Star, Season Six, Episode Seven

Nashville Star Live Blog

Original songs week was always something to look forward to during Nashville Star’s USA Network run: the predictably hilarious debacles, the unexpected gems and mostly the fact that Nashville Star held it contestants to a much higher standard than any other talent competition. NBC deserves credit for continuing this tradition despite the abysmal talent of season six. It remains to be seen whether the songs that will be performed tonight were actually written by the contestants themselves; in such a tightly engineered show, it is certainly conceivable that the Nashville Star producers will supply each contestant with an American Idol-style, prefab slice of Music Row, thus technically perpetuating “original songs” week while destroying the spirit of the tradition.

Find out by joining us at 8 p.m. central.

9:01 – Matt C: Honestly, I briefly forgot that Billy Ray Cyrus is the host of this thing.

9:02 – Matt C: Am I the only one who doesn’t think that Coffey is genuine about his love for the Grand Ole Opry?

9:03 – Matt C: Coffey is performing one of those infamous list songs about how country he is. In other words, the exact thing that’s released by every mediocre new artists who’s not the least bit country.

9:04 – Matt C: The lyrics to this song are not much worse than average radio fare, but the melody is terribly meandering. It’s melodic structure, not lyrical ability, that seems to distinguish the hitmakers from the wannabes these days.

9:08 – Matt C: I probably won’t offer much criticism of the performances this week because I’m focused on the songs, but I should note that I thought that was Coffey’s least annoying performance of the competition.

9:11 – Matt C: BRC confirms: only two episodes of Nashville Star remain.

9:12 – Matt C: Melissa Lawson is performing a song that sounds like something Martina McBride would cut.

9:14 – Matt C: If I had to pick an “original song” that was actually an NBC plant, this would be it.

9:15 – Matt C: Historically, original songs week has been extremely important in determining the winner of this competition. If Gabe doesn’t bring something good to the table, Melissa has this thing.

9:16 – Matt C: Sam G.: Melissa is singing the theme song for her 1/2 hour sitcom about a newly divorced mom making it in the world on her own. “Who can turn the world on with her smile…”

9:17 – Matt C: Who wants to bet that Warner Brothers has reserved a spot for Melissa Lawson on The Biggest Loser in case she actually wins this thing?

9:19 – Matt C: Michael Dean Church: its Reba meets Grace Under Fire meets Roseanne.

9:21 – Matt C: Believe it or not, I actually miss the days when Two Foot Fred was a regular on this show.

9:22 – Matt C: It looks like Jeffrey, John and Jewel are performing a medley of their individual hits.

9:23 – Matt C: This show would be a lot better if we could see Jewel’s legs all of the time.

9:24 – Matt C: Say what you will about Jeffrey Steele, but “The Cowboy in Me” is a really great song.

9:25 – Matt C: Sam G.: Ooh, Jewel. If you’re going a sing, try to sing better than all the people you’re slamming. Laura or Sophie could have sung ring around you tonight.

9:26 – Matt C: I hate to get picky, but the judges really didn’t perform together. They stood on the stage together while they performed individually.

9:28 – Matt C: Leeann: The contestants should be able to critique the judges’ performances.

9:33 – Matt C: Gabe Garcia is performing “Lost Weekend,” which is the third song performed tonight that has been a number one hit at least four times. I was hoping that he’d perform a real tear-in-my-beer honky tonk ballad, but we’re stuck with this happy, re-tread schlock.

9:34 – Matt C: Rich is right: while I didn’t like Gabe’s song, it’s the first one with a melodic structure that actually sounds like a hit.

9:35 – Matt C: But give it to Jewel for standing on principle: you want not only to have a radio hit, but also to release something that’s uniquely you and not too generic. Of course, she should have also treated Coffey and Melissa Lawson to the same criticism.

9:37 – Matt C: Lucas: Did Gabe just change the words to Redneck Yacht club and call it original? I think so…

9:38 – Matt C: If I recall correctly, USA Network used to let every contestant perform on original songs week before making the elimination. It’s a shame that NBC is not following suit, as I was rather looking forward to original songs from both Shawn Mayer and Ashlee Hewitt.

9:41 – Matt C: Thankfully, NBC is letting both of the final two contestants perform. Damn this misleading hosting.

9:43 – Matt C: Ashlee Hewitt has herself a cute little song that actually shows some personality.

9:44 – Matt C: Matt B.: Well, Ashlee has herself a theme song for a commercial.

9:44 – Matt C: Ashlee went a little too warbly Jewel on that performance, but the quality of the song made up for it.

9:46 – Matt C: Ashlee’s “Mike’s Hard Lemonade” sounded like a good album cut while the other three songs we’ve heard sounded like bad singles.

9:51 – Matt C: Shawn Mayer dares to perform a semi-sad song, but there’s too much contrived resoluteness for my taste.

9:52 – Matt C: Matt B.: “I’m Not Looking Back.” Hmmm, a cry me a river song…

9:53 – Matt C: Chris N.: I’m docking points for the guitar solo.

9:53 – Matt C: For what it’s worth, that was an awful vocal performance.

9:55 – Matt C: Ashley Hewitt, the best songwriter of the bunch, is going home.

9:56 – Matt C: Chris N.: I think they were both giddy at the prospect of not winning.

9:56 – Matt C: Interesting choice of songs tonight. That was pretty typical Nashville Star original songs week fare, but this is the first year that I can remember when no one performed a really stark, stunning song that pushed them over the top. See Zac Hacker, “If it Wasn’t for the Whiskey,” Chris Young, “Drinking Me Lonely,” and Miranda Lambert, “Greyhound Bound for Nowhere.”

9:59 – Matt C: Aha, Katie Cook is now a “co-host!”

10:01 – Matt C: Thanks for coming, everybody. I’ll post a wrap-up shortly.

10:14 – Matt C:

Wrap-up:

Best song: Ashlee Hewitt, “Mike’s Hard Lemonade.” No song really grabbed me tonight, but I liked Ashlee Hewitt’s colorful ditty the best.

Worst song: “Southern Man.” The really sad thing is that this is essentially Luke Bryan’s current single.

Should be eliminated: Coffey. Coffey. Coffey.

Will be eliminated: Shawn Mayer, because America has poor taste.

Should win: Gabe Gross.

Will win: Melissa Lawson. Unfortunately, Nashville Star viewers have myopically chosen to let a feel-good story take precedent over artistic longevity.

I think it’s a good bet that Ashlee Hewitt will be the writer/co-writer on her song.

Speaking of Ashlee, you can hear her practicing her song in a link in the first article on Nashville Hype. As mention in Paul King’s write up the song sounds similar to “Good Directions” even though Ashlee wrote it before that song became a hit for Billy Currington. I think “Girl In a Car” off The Hewitt Sisters EP would be a better choice as its perfect for the Taylor Swift crowd. Oh well….

If Melissa is the winner, I see WB giving Melissa a ‘hacker-deal’ and quickly releasing her album only this time instead of Wal-Mart and digital only, they’ll just go digital. Then, they’ll sign Ashlee Hewitt.

Rick, if the Nashville community or old producers had picked the talent, artists like Michael Dean would’ve gotten a real shot. I doubt Joanna would want to win a deal with a label she already had a deal/hated being with.

Breathe and Coffey’s song? the same? I’m guessing she meant Melissa’s song.

19 Somethin’ was a huge hit for Mark Wills but it was so generic (as were many of his hits) that he got lost among the crowd when younger, more handsome men came along (Billy Currington, I’m talking to you).

As someone whose job is to interview country artists, I’d like to see the industry welcome as many hot blondes as possible. Also, brunettes. And redheads.

Ummmm, Ashlee just wrote “Good Directions” and swapped out guy for a girl and turnip greens for “Mike’s Hard Lemonade.” Original it is not.

I’m listening to MDC’s songs in between commercials. Dude, you were right to avoid this show. Totally the wrong venue for you.

BRC should really win a “Razzie” for Worst Host of the year. I think the show figured this out and gave Katie Cook more involvement in the show.

Speaking of Jewel, have you seen her on GAC’s “Origins”? There are a few times while she’s singing live around a campfire that she goes high and oh my..talk about off key. I just cringe.

I know you would Chris LOL, I am not saying that there not nice to look at dont get me wrong I have seen some of them up close and personal but I am just saying you cant clone talent there is only one Carrie underwood as there should be now they should find another someone else who is origional lol

I honestly don’t think that BRC was ever auditioned. He was only hired in a futile attempt to land the teenybopper demo and maybe even get Miley to perform on the show. Of course, Miley’s smart enough to avoid this one.

Leeann: Maybe I’m just still thinking of her as a folky-country singer. Maybe it’s the blatant product placement in the song title. I like her, but that rubbed me the wrong way.

The song is good but I don’t like her as a singer. The hook is huge. This is the hit of the bunch. Steele would be right to publish it. That has Faith/Martina all over it.

I would have put either of the bottom two ahead of Coffey or Melissa. Actually, they should have run the show in reverse and kick Coffey off the show, and it would have made more sense.

MDC, my choice for the next single would be “Helpless.” The Rabbit is a damned intriguing and good song, but I don’t think it’s radio-friendly. Helpless isn’t a type of song that I normally like, but it grabbed me. All in all, really good songs!

Nice to see this show coming to a stop. It hasn’t done anything remotely good for country music, and it’s definitely not going to get any new fans to the genre.

  153. Rick

Chris, sounds like a time for another interview. Before Kelly became the new lead singer / Buffy replacement I believe she was working as a waitress at a TGIF restaurant in Arizona. How’s that for coutry bona-fides! (lol)

Vicki, what’s scary is that when the really bad performers keep lasting from week to week it means they just might win the whole shebang! Brad Cotter springs to mind….

i didn’t think the gabe garcia song was even remotely original. it was the same ol’ I V vi IV chord progression. it’s called the pachebel canon in d progression. and it’s in one billion songs. ‘it’s your love’ is an example of it. it’s just a songwriting cliche at this point. so it loses points for being boring musically.

a lot of cliches tonight, folks. i think we should hook up all the singers to electrical shocks. every time they use a tired cliche, they receive x volts of electricity straight to the nads. or the equivalent. the winner gets electrocuted. america wins!! praise Jesus.

    What’s the theme next week?

  158. Rick
    July 21, 2008 at 11:39 pm Permalink

Leann, the theme next week can be summed up as: “The contestants sing pop songs poorly and the judges make inane comments”. Sounds kinda familiar….

I’m so fed up with this sham that I voted online my full alotted 10 votes for Cough-Fay! This show has been so poorly executed that the worst performer left deserves to win in my opinion. As long as I have opportunity to vote, I will vote only for Kof-fae. Then if he wins, I’ll wish him a career as successful as Cowboy Troy…….

Tonight I’ve learned that “What Hurts the Most” is still an annoying song even if not sung by Rascal Flatts; and I was reminded that I love the song “The Cowboy in Me”. I like very few Tim McGraw songs, but that one is awesome.

Overall, Jeffrey Steele’s songwriting seems to be hit and miss:
