Live Blog: Nashville Star, Season Six, Episode Four

It’s “Family Week” on Nashville Star and each contestant gets two chances to perform a country song. I’m not sure what family week means (hint to contestants: there are lots of country songs about family!) but I fear that we’ll see plenty of melodramatic videos about single parents and dead goldfish. Whatever happens, there are two things to look forward to: Blake Shelton performs and we live blog, and everything starts at 8 p.m. central.
11:25 - Matt C:
Wrap-up: Wow, what a difference a few country songs make. The performances weren’t much better than previous episodes, but this show seems much better when not speckled with infuriating pop songs.
Best performance: In a show without a standout performance, I’ll go with Gabe Garcia, “Dead or Alive” and “The Fireman.” I would have preferred to hear him sing two country songs, but he did give a killer rock performance and his honky-tonk was, as always, unimpeachable.
Worst performance: Laura & Sophie. I loved them in the first three weeks, but both of their episode four performances were ungodly pitchy. They lost the chemistry that fueled “Rockin’ to the Rhythm of the Rain” and “Pretty Young Thing” and reverted to the amateur status that characterized their tentative performance of “Stand by Your Man.”
Should be eliminated: Laura & Sophie deserve another chance given the strength of their early performances, and two performers are going home next week, so I’ll go with Coffey and Tommy Stanley, the two least country and consistently awful contestants remaining. Enough said.
Will be eliminated: Laura & Sophie gave two awful performances and were panned by judges who seem to expect that they’re not long for the competition, so I suspect that the voters will follow the judges’ lead. With all the country emphasis this week, the “not country” criticism will stick to someone and that someone will be Coffey, because Tommy Stanley earned some extra military sympathy with the visit from his shipmates this week.
Should win: Gabe Garcia. It remains to be seen what kind of performer he is, but I’m comfortably declaring that he’s a talented and potentially successful one.
Will win: Melissa Lawson. Both the audience and the judges seem to be infatuated (no pun intended) with her, but I don’t get it. If Lawson does win, it will rank among Nashville Star’s bigger mistakes (and that’s saying something for a show that has had almost no commercial influence) because Lawson is almost completely unmarketable and her talent does not run as deep as this pitiful television show makes it seem.
10:59 - Matt C: Thanks for coming, folks. I’ll post a wrap-up in a few minutes, and, for the first time, I will offer opinions about which contestants will and should win.
10:59 - Matt C: No Miley. I guess that you’re legally emancipated after your first nude photo shoot.
10:58 - Matt C: Oh my God…think there’s a black sheep in Billy Ray Cyrus’s family?
10:57 - Matt C: Ok, next week two contestants are going home. Coffey and Tommy Stanley, please?
10:56 - Matt C: Steele is already starting to let them down easy. Not a good sign for Disney’s next stars.
10:55 - Matt C: Ouch, this is cacophonous. For the second time tonight, Laura & Sophie are nothing but dis-harmony.
10:52 - Matt C: Alyson Gilbert is going home. Just put a cutout on the side of the stage, ok? We males would appreciate it.
10:50 - Matt C: Matt B.: Watching these girls sing that song was like the girls in “13 going on 30″ sing into a hairbrush.
10:50 - Matt C: I hated that arrangement and the vocal performance was disappointing. Their worst performance of the competition by far. For once, I agree with the criticism of Laura & Sophie as amateurs. As Chris correctly pointed out, it looked and sounded like the Disney Channel.
10:48 - Matt C: Chris N: Disney Channel on line one!
10:47 - Matt C: I won’t feel as bad if Laura & Sophie leave after this performance. Unfortunately, these two have gone back to amateur hour.
10:46 - Matt C: After establishing themselves as the most country performers of the competition, Laura & Sophie are performing “Walking on Sunshine.” Smacks of desperation.
10:41 - Matt C: Jeffrey Steele is right. Alyson seems like she should be great, but she just hasn’t delivered.
10:39 - Matt C: Alyson’s trying too hard. If you have to yell at the audience to get interested, you’ve already failed.
10:38 - Matt C: Ouch, even mom says that Alyson is going down.
10:37 - Matt C: I have to root for the talented Laura & Sophie, but it’s hard. Alyson Gilbert is so pretty.
10:32 - Matt C: Gabe does do a mean George Strait. Another fantastic performance. This is the kind of stuff that I like to hear him sing.
10:29 - Matt C: That was a rock performance, but a damn good one. Gabe Garcia is a legitimate talent; I’m just not sure what kind of talent he is.
10:26 - Matt C: This is not good. I could forgive Gabe Garcia for performing pop songs the last two weeks, as he didn’t have much choice, but now he’s chosen a Bon Jovi song when everyone else is singing country music. I’m afraid that he skews more pop-rock than honky-tonk.
10:22 - Matt C: Any guesses about who’s going home tonight?
10:19 - Matt C: Blake used to be a judge on Nashville Star. He did a good job, even if he spent way too much time trying to pick up Whitney Duncan.
10:18 - Matt C: Who’d have thought that Blake Shelton would perform the least country song of the night? That’s a pleasant surprise.
10:12 - Matt C: Randy Travis! So country that I can smell the manure! Amazing how much better a real country song makes a bad performance sound (and that was a terrible performance).
10:12 - Matt C: Damn, Shawn Mayer already has merch.
10:10 - Matt C: Seriously, Shawn…just “breathe.”
10:08 - Matt C: There’s not much personality in Shawn Mayer’s Faith Hill carbon-copy, but I am gaining more appreciation for her vocal ability. She’s not bad.
10:06 - Matt C: Ugh. The only three performers left are my three favorites. As much as I’ll miss the eye candy, I hope that Alyson Gilbert gets the ax.
10:02 - Matt C: Besides, I think that Melissa Lawson has “Angela Hacker” written all over her. Someone who’s kind of good at one thing but isn’t nearly as talented as an over-produced reality show makes her seem.
9:59 - Matt C: The audience is really loving Lawson, but I just don’t get it. Regardless of her talent, NBC has to be hoping that she doesn’t win. Like it or not, she’s just not marketable to the country audience, and this show needs to produce a star to become viable on a major network.
9:58 - Matt C: I don’t understand all the fawning over Melissa Lawson. She holds pitch better than just about any of the contestants, but her voice just sounds so empty to me. It’s like she’s digging for some pipes that just aren’t there.
9:55 - Matt C: Melissa Lawson is up next.
9:54 - Matt C: However, that was a really ugly performance, almost Taylor Swift ugly. Their worst pitch problems yet.
9:53 - Matt C: Pearl Heart becomes the first artist to go two for two on country songs with “One Way Ticket.” Nice.
9:51 - Matt C: Again I find myself agreeing with Matt B.: Why don’t they just switch Katie and Billy Ray around? She actually is a host. BRC is an entertainer (one who LOVES the spotlight) but he certainly ain’t no host, no matter how much ‘Howie’ he has been studying.
9:46 - Matt C: File Pearl Heart into the “consistent” folder. I agree with Matt B.: good performance, but pretty flat. More significantly, I’ve yet to hear them sing anything other than three-part harmony, which can get pretty boring.
9:45 - Matt C: I’m still amazed that Jeffrey Steele called, “I’ll Still Be Loving You,” a song that he didn’t write “one of the best songs ever written.”
9:45 - Matt C: Pearl Heart isn’t familiar with a Restless Heart song? No shit.
9:42 - Matt C: Ok, I just saw a commercial in which Carrie Underwood is singing to a pony. It was pretty pitchy too; can corporate American not afford auto-tune?
9:40 - Matt C: BRC seems to take sadistic pleasure in these after-the-break “cliffhangers.” Hey, at least he’s showing some personality. Why do I get the impression that the Nashville Star producers made him watch lots of Howie Mandel tapes?
9:37 - Matt C: Roger: Chris N. I wish his dad was Ralph Stanley!
9:36 - Matt C: Boy, what’s with the kids these days? Those sailors can’t march for shit.
9:35 - Matt C: Did Tommy’s shipmate just thank him for “keeping my dreams alive?”
9:32 - Matt C: Chris N.: I wish Tommy Stanley’s dad was Paul Stanley.
9:31 - Matt C: Is it just me, or have the producers finally decided that they need to make this a country program? Every contestant, even the inveterate poppers, have sung at least one country song, the judges are focusing on whether the contestant can sing country music, and even the families are prodding their loved ones to “return to their roots.”
9:28 - Matt C: Hate to say it, but that was Tommy Stanley’s best performance. Keep him under 50 beats per minute so he doesn’t have those pseudo-seizures.
9:26 - Matt C: Insight into Tommy Stanley’s (lack of) country mentality: on a country music show, he calls “Tiny Dancer” an Elton John song.
9:26 - Matt C: Believe it or not, I consider a Rascal Flatts song to be a welcome reprieve. “Bless the Broken Road” is also one of the few good songs in their catalog.
9:25 - Matt C: Bah, hopes dashed. Tommy Stanley performs next.
9:21 - Matt C: Paula: John Rich has the nerve to tell someone they’re not country? How the hell would he know?
9:19 - Matt C: I never thought I’d be saying this, but we’re three for four on songs that have actually been cut by country artists.
9:18 - Matt C: See, this is what’s wrong with the current conception of country music. Coffey’s response to John RIch’s criticism that he’s obviously not a country singer is “I’m from a small town.”
9:16 - Matt C: That trill in Coffey’s voice is just annoying.
9:15 - Matt C: Wow, Coffey had a little Dwight Yoakam action going on during the break there.
9:15 - Matt C: I’m guessing that Coffey doesn’t know that Hank Williams sang this song, otherwise, he certainly wouldn’t touch it. “Hey Good Lookin’” is a Jimmy Buffett record, right?
9:13 - Matt C: And it’s not Coffey.
9:13 - Matt C: BRC just gave me an Achy Breaky Heart: only one contestant will be going home tonight.
9:09 - Matt C: John Rich knows that it was Sammi Smith, not Tammy Wynette, who had a hit with “Help Me Make it Through The Night,” right? Apparently he’s never heard Tammy sing either.
9:09 - Matt C: And it lasted 23 seconds.
9:08 - Matt C: This just in: ASHLEE HEWITT SINGS A COUNTRY SONG!!!!
9:08 - Matt C: Wait, the contestants are performing twice in a row? Is this to prevent one of the judges from committing a Paula Abdul?
9:06 - Matt C: I’ll give this to Ashlee Hewitt: she’s been consistent. However, I still don’t care for the tone of her voice and I hate her song choices. She’s just not a country singer.
9:04 - Matt C: Playing two instruments during the same song is nothing but showing off.
9:02 - Matt C: “Don’t Stop Believing” was a pop song that ended an HBO series about a mob family, so yeah, it’s perfect for family week on a country show.
9:00 - Matt C: Pathetic: now even Miley Cyrus is too much to hope for.
9:00 - Matt C: Before we even began, Chris N. got in a pretty good quip: If anybody does “I’m My Own Grandpa,” I’ll vote for them five times.
8:55 - Matt C: Before we begin, I have some good news: two contestants are going home tonight! Is it too much to hope that those contestants will be Tommy Stanley and Coffey? Probably, so I’ll settle for one of the two. Getting rid of those two won’t much increase the collective talent, but it will make watching the show considerably less infuriating.

Free Music Downloads: If you’ve only recently come to country music, or have never delved past the genre’s surface and it’s most famous names, you may not have heard of Tom Russell. That’s a shame, and The 9513’s Free Music series is here to help set you down the right path.
Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.

Will this season of Nashville Star redeem itself tonight? Will the contestants rise to the occasion and reveal previously hidden greatness? And most importantly, will anyone tune in and does anyone still care at this point? Hmmmm…
As much fun as these 9513 blogs are don’t forget the original and still best Nashville Star critic Stormy Weather over at the Opry’s website. Stormy’s favorite target used to be Anastasia Brown, so things aren’t quite the same this season, but Stormy never disappoints:

As for songs tonight, I’d like to hear a cover of Dave Cox’s “Cutting Down Our Family Tree”….

Just got back from Country Fest in Cadott, Wisconsin (four days, big names). Blake Shelton performed yesterday before Trace Adkins… and wow… Blake puts on a show. The guy is hilarious. He and Trace Adkins were probably my favorite of the weekend, beating out Kenny C., Sugarland, Brooks and Dunn and 15 others. I would go into details, but I’m tired, so just take my word for it. If you haven’t seen Blake Shelton yet, get to one of his shows if he comes to your area!
June 30, 2008 at 6:27 pm Permalink
Sadly, the show starts 3 hours later here (9pm Pacific), but I always enjoy checking in on the comments after I’ve watched it myself.
June 30, 2008 at 6:58 pm Permalink
I’m a Wisconsin native and have been to many of the state’s (numerous) country music festivals, but have never attended Cadott’s. Sounds like a good time.

So Billy Ray’s youngest (Noah? for a girl?) has better hosting abilities than he does already. Any guesses to when Disney gives her her own show?
June 30, 2008 at 7:05 pm Permalink
So it’s still “pop week”
June 30, 2008 at 7:09 pm Permalink
Wow, a Kristofferson Record!
June 30, 2008 at 7:10 pm Permalink
Ashlee a ‘modern day Tammy Wynette?’ Good grief.
June 30, 2008 at 7:14 pm Permalink
umm….does “modern day” mean weak voiced?
June 30, 2008 at 7:15 pm Permalink
I guess I’m alone in enjoying Hewitt.
June 30, 2008 at 7:16 pm Permalink
Leeann,
I like her but Jewel is already there in country…
Coffey sounds pretty decent on this Hank classic but his vibrato gets too much at times.
June 30, 2008 at 7:16 pm Permalink
I wonder why he doesn’t want to make an actual country song sound very country on a country music talent show?
June 30, 2008 at 7:18 pm Permalink
John Rich is, once again, proving what a pompous Jack-Ass he is. Coffey’s is as ‘country’ as anyone else on this show and had a good comeback for it all.
June 30, 2008 at 7:18 pm Permalink
Matt,
This was my first time up to Wisconsin and I had a great time. We spent our five days in Eau Claire, Chip Falls, and, obviously, Cadott. It’s neat just to be in a different environment and experience life outside of Missouri. The music is a nice bonus. I’m not quite to the drinking age yet, so we also enjoyed watching our drunk seat-neighbors stumble around and dance to Dierks and Kenny. That’s probably mean of us, but hey, it was entertaining.
The one disappointment was Kenny Chesney. While there is often some negativity surrounding his music, I’ve heard nothing but great things about his concerts. At Country Fest, though, he was the only artist (of 19 total) who refused to do a pre-show interview on the big screen, and also played for only an hour of the 90 minute time slot with no encore. We have heard (from sources that aren’t entirely credible) that he said the Fest didn’t pay him enough for him to play a 90-minute show, but regardless, it was pretty disappointing.
Anyway, back to Nashville Star!

John Rich has the nerve to tell someone they’re not country? How the hell would he know?
June 30, 2008 at 7:20 pm Permalink
Matt B, I’m sorry to have to disagree with you on both points.
June 30, 2008 at 7:21 pm Permalink
Leeann,
You don’t think JR is being a jack ass? I know it’s his job to critique the people and what he said isn’t actually ‘wrong.’ It’s just the way he said it.
June 30, 2008 at 7:22 pm Permalink
Charlie Rich didn’t consider John Denver to be a country artist (reaction on awards show), though I’d disagree.
June 30, 2008 at 7:23 pm Permalink
Matt C…..good to see another cheesehead on the forumn! I’m a nashvillian now but i’m from appleton….wish i was at summerfest this week!!!
June 30, 2008 at 7:23 pm Permalink
I’d call John Denver a country artist. He wasn’t always faithful, but he was when singing that song.
June 30, 2008 at 7:23 pm Permalink
Ah, Matt, I almost always think Rich is a jack ass, but I didn’t think he was wrong and I didn’t think that Coffe’s reaction was especially good…more annoying.
June 30, 2008 at 7:24 pm Permalink
I am also now a Nashvillian, but born and raised near Milwaukee.
June 30, 2008 at 7:24 pm Permalink
I completely agree Matt C..
June 30, 2008 at 7:26 pm Permalink
I don’t consider a RF song going back to his country roots…but whatever.
June 30, 2008 at 7:26 pm Permalink
Wow,
Tommy Stanley is singing “Tiny Dancer?” I guess it’s technically a country song now since Tim McGraw covered it. Hmm, the Bless The Broken Road cover isn’t too bad. It’s certainly better than the Rascal Flatts song.
June 30, 2008 at 7:26 pm Permalink
I can’t believe I’d rather hear Gary LeVox sing this!
June 30, 2008 at 7:27 pm Permalink
wow, Leeann we are in disagreement though Stanley’s version isn’t all that good either.
June 30, 2008 at 7:27 pm Permalink
I had to come here. Tommy Stanley was setting the dogs off to howl. My ears are hurting on those long out of tune notes.
June 30, 2008 at 7:29 pm Permalink
So,
Will JR criticize his ‘girls’ the way he’s criticizing the men?
June 30, 2008 at 7:32 pm Permalink
I wish Tommy Stanley’s dad was Paul Stanley.

Okay, Jewel, end rant.
June 30, 2008 at 7:38 pm Permalink
OK, I wish Ralph Stanley was Paul’s dad and Paul was Tommy’s dad.
June 30, 2008 at 7:39 pm Permalink
so why are we doing this second song, which is really barely a verse? who can tell whether they can sing or not by that?
June 30, 2008 at 7:40 pm Permalink
Apparently Tommy is in the military in some capacity. Did they make that clear?
June 30, 2008 at 7:40 pm Permalink
I thought I swore off watching this show! Yet, here I am watching it. At least, as Matt C pointed out, they’re focusing more on the country.
June 30, 2008 at 7:41 pm Permalink
Paula,
it’s a way for the producers to fill up 2 hours on the show.
June 30, 2008 at 7:41 pm Permalink
“Those sailors can’t march for shit.”
Matt, why do you hate America?
June 30, 2008 at 7:46 pm Permalink
Restless Heart: another country song and they’re doing decently too, even if they’re a bit flat.
June 30, 2008 at 7:46 pm Permalink
they sound pitchy.
June 30, 2008 at 7:48 pm Permalink
well, comparitively speaking … there were pretty good.

Well, you’re lucky, K-Man. I lost anything but a morbid interest right quick during episode one.
June 30, 2008 at 7:51 pm Permalink
Matt C, I agree with you once again. They need to get away from the three part harmony.
June 30, 2008 at 7:52 pm Permalink
Yeah! That’s why I’m watching…a morbid interest. I knew there was a reason.
June 30, 2008 at 7:54 pm Permalink
I thought for one second that they would pick a lead singer, but I guess not.
June 30, 2008 at 7:54 pm Permalink
well it wasn’t completely ‘3-part harmony’ but there the one in the red needs to be the lead singer.
June 30, 2008 at 7:55 pm Permalink
Didn’t that Coffe guy do two country in a row? Hank Williams and RF (though I understand forgetting about RF).
June 30, 2008 at 7:56 pm Permalink
I’m trying to remember what Coffey’s second song was. I thought that Tommy Stanley was the only one who sang Rascal Flatts.
June 30, 2008 at 7:57 pm Permalink
Coffey was “Take Me Home Country Roads, no?”
At least she’s here. Thank God. I take back there being ‘no one’ being country. she’s pop country.
June 30, 2008 at 7:58 pm Permalink
Oh yeah, I just realized that. Though my point still stands.
June 30, 2008 at 7:58 pm Permalink
Not bad, a little pitchy, but there’s a reason I don’t hate her.
June 30, 2008 at 7:59 pm Permalink
MAtt C wasn’t it “take me home country roads?”
June 30, 2008 at 7:59 pm Permalink
Yeah Matt, you’re right. I stand corrected (though Coffey’s performances didn’t sound very country).
June 30, 2008 at 8:00 pm Permalink
I agree, Matt, her voice is good but I don’t hear anything special or unique in it.
June 30, 2008 at 8:01 pm Permalink
There’s a little “Trisha” to her performance here.
June 30, 2008 at 8:02 pm Permalink
melissa was one of my early favorites … mostly because i thought she had the most potential. i still think she has the most potential … but tonight she didnt live up to it.
June 30, 2008 at 8:03 pm Permalink
Katie just did the same thing that Tommy Stanley did earlier by refering to “Landslide” as a Fleetwood Mac song.
June 30, 2008 at 8:03 pm Permalink
Yeah, I don’t get it. I mean, it’s probably more accurate, but it’s inconsistent with the producers’ ostensible decision to go country this week.
June 30, 2008 at 8:04 pm Permalink
Matt C,
When reading a CMT Blog by Caitlin from Caitlin & Will, she commented that the label had them on a diet, Warner Bros. is gonna follow the same path, either that or they’ll sign someone else like they did with Angela Hacker and Whitney Duncan.
June 30, 2008 at 8:06 pm Permalink
You’re not going to be able to diet Melissa Lawson to a supermodel. Really, if she’s going to succeed, the “everyday woman” thing is going to have to be part of her image (I just don’t think it’s an image that many fans are going to find appealing. I mean, imagine Carrie Underwood and Melissa Lawson videos running back to back on CMT).
June 30, 2008 at 8:06 pm Permalink
Matt B, I agree, there was a little Trisha there. I didn’t notice it until you pointed it out.
June 30, 2008 at 8:06 pm Permalink
Vote getters.
June 30, 2008 at 8:08 pm Permalink
Matt,
I agree with you. It’s why she’ll have ‘face shots’ on her albums and there are video masking techniques. However, if she can even get to Trisha’s size, she might have a shot. Still, I’m sure, of the women, the label wants Ashlee Hewitt or Shawn Mayer.
June 30, 2008 at 8:10 pm Permalink
That was total karaoke by Mayer. She should’ve died her hair out.
June 30, 2008 at 8:10 pm Permalink
Shawn’s voice wasn’t bad, really.
June 30, 2008 at 8:11 pm Permalink
Matt B, I swear I’m not disagreeing with you on purpose.:)
June 30, 2008 at 8:11 pm Permalink
Right, it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t memorable either.
June 30, 2008 at 8:12 pm Permalink
I like her MUCH better on “Forever and Ever, Amen”
June 30, 2008 at 8:12 pm Permalink
Oh man, she’s butchering Randy Travis’ song.

Oh, here we go again Leeann, :)
June 30, 2008 at 8:14 pm Permalink
No John, we did not know that the winner of this contest will perform at the Olympics.
June 30, 2008 at 8:14 pm Permalink
actually, Leeann, I do agree she was Terrible on the song but I liked that it wasn’t karaoke.
June 30, 2008 at 8:15 pm Permalink
Matt, I do agree that Rich could find nicer ways to make his points. I felt bad for Shawn there. She wanted to know what he didn’t like and he didn’t answer, because he didn’t stop long enough to listen to her, since his voice is obviously his favorite one to hear.
June 30, 2008 at 8:16 pm Permalink
Gee, apparently Carrie Underwood has a few endorsements.
June 30, 2008 at 8:18 pm Permalink
Leeann, that’s my biggest problem with him, even when Gene Simmons or Hip-hop ’self-promoters’ talk or criticize people, they at least tell them their reasons. JR just seems unreasonable. At least he DID criticize a female contestant (I was thinking he was angling to be the ‘winning’ judge).
June 30, 2008 at 8:18 pm Permalink
Hey, this guy can sing.:)
June 30, 2008 at 8:19 pm Permalink
Couldn’t Blake have sung this song on pop night instead of that stripper act Danity Kane?
I do love this song, no matter how sappy that might make me sound. It helped me get through some ‘homesick’ moments when I was overseas (the Buble original for the record).
Yikes, Blake was unusally flat on that high note.
June 30, 2008 at 8:20 pm Permalink
Actually, I don’t even love how Blake’s singing tonight. Maybe it’s something in the NS water.
June 30, 2008 at 8:20 pm Permalink
Amen, Matt B.
June 30, 2008 at 8:20 pm Permalink
It’s the live TV aspect I’m sure.
June 30, 2008 at 8:21 pm Permalink
Matt B, now we’re talking.:)
June 30, 2008 at 8:23 pm Permalink
Matt B,
I was thinking the exact same thing. My sister listens to pop radio a lot, and I cannot stand that Danity Kane song.
June 30, 2008 at 8:23 pm Permalink
Crap, I just started up the DVR and haven’t caught up with you guys yet, but judging from the comments and live blog things are much improved over last week.
June 30, 2008 at 8:25 pm Permalink
I’m listening to Catherine Britt sing a stunning ballad from her Aussie CD “Drive In Movie” during this break. Ahh some country music…
June 30, 2008 at 8:25 pm Permalink
Too little too late though, it seems, judging by lower number of posters on this thread this week.
June 30, 2008 at 8:26 pm Permalink
Gabe made it. It’s no surprise that he would.
June 30, 2008 at 8:26 pm Permalink
That’s what I was afraid of. Hopefully the show will continue to improve once they weed out the posers…
June 30, 2008 at 8:26 pm Permalink
LeAnn, the number of readers is consistent with previous weeks. People just aren’t commenting.
June 30, 2008 at 8:26 pm Permalink
I thought he was supposed to be our country boy.
June 30, 2008 at 8:27 pm Permalink
Of all the Bon Jovi songs to sing, that one HAS been covered by two country artists before. Montgomery Gentry and Chris Cagle. Why it hasn’t been a single yet is beside me.
June 30, 2008 at 8:28 pm Permalink
NBC trolls, where art thou?
June 30, 2008 at 8:28 pm Permalink
Chris, they’ve been keeping their heads down since they were discovered. You’ve misidentified them the last couple of times.
June 30, 2008 at 8:28 pm Permalink
who thinks JR will say’ “You’re what country needs, a hispanic country star” any bets?
June 30, 2008 at 8:29 pm Permalink
They forgot to push the country thing this week.
June 30, 2008 at 8:30 pm Permalink
Or did they just switch ISPs? Aha!
June 30, 2008 at 8:30 pm Permalink
I meant with Gabe.
June 30, 2008 at 8:30 pm Permalink
Did Jewel just say that Gabe is the best Muggle voice they have?
June 30, 2008 at 8:30 pm Permalink
George Strait and Kenny Chesney should take notes from Jewel about not performing mechanically.
June 30, 2008 at 8:31 pm Permalink
Oops, forgot to add, so they other are all witches from Harry Potter.
June 30, 2008 at 8:31 pm Permalink
He likes Strait.
June 30, 2008 at 8:31 pm Permalink
ahh, there’s the Gabe we remember…
June 30, 2008 at 8:32 pm Permalink
Probably not. We can view the owners of most IPs and in the beginning it was obvious (NBC, Burbank, CA). Lately, the IPs have not been owned by NBC and are nowhere near CA, so if they’re still around, they’re well disguised.
June 30, 2008 at 8:33 pm Permalink
So, Matt C, what you are saying, then, is that The producers WERE watching the blog, or at least the interns were.
June 30, 2008 at 8:34 pm Permalink
I refuse to believe anyone would say such things for free. I have too much faith in the good taste of the American publ … actually, never mind.
June 30, 2008 at 8:35 pm Permalink
Yeah, they’ve been watching the blog. We were talking with some folks over at NBC about promotion before the season began, and they put a notice about our first live blog on their official message board. Strangely, they haven’t publicized our subsequent blogs:).
June 30, 2008 at 8:35 pm Permalink
hahahaha
June 30, 2008 at 8:35 pm Permalink
Well, Gabe should be forgiven for singing Bon jovi for it had the slow, “cowboy” beat. He is definitely forgiven after “Fireman”!
June 30, 2008 at 8:38 pm Permalink
oh boy, here we go, Allison “wolf eyes” is gonna sing “She’s In Love With The Boy?” Yikes….
June 30, 2008 at 8:39 pm Permalink
Flat, pitchy, off-key. Like AI people shouldn’t do Mariah or Whitney, country singers shouldn’t do Trisha or Martina.
June 30, 2008 at 8:42 pm Permalink
What did Laura and Sophie sing last week? They’re apparently in the bottom two?
June 30, 2008 at 8:44 pm Permalink
Laura and Sophie sang Michael Jackson’s “Pretty Young Thing” last week.
June 30, 2008 at 8:46 pm Permalink
Oh, I missed it, I guess.
June 30, 2008 at 8:46 pm Permalink
Jeffrey really enjoys the family reunions, which is nice to see.
June 30, 2008 at 8:48 pm Permalink
Disney Channel on line one!
June 30, 2008 at 8:48 pm Permalink
It doesn’t quite sound like they’re actually walking on sunshine.
June 30, 2008 at 8:49 pm Permalink
Leeann,
Jeffrey is very much a family man. It’s still sad that his son died in that off-road accident a while back.
This song isn’t even remotely country.
June 30, 2008 at 8:50 pm Permalink
Watching these girls sing that song was like the girls in “13 going on 30″ sing into a hairbrush.
June 30, 2008 at 8:53 pm Permalink
Well these ‘high school musical’ girls can’t do worse than they just did.
June 30, 2008 at 8:53 pm Permalink
A full 28 seconds between Billy Ray saying “is …” and actually announcing the ejectee.
June 30, 2008 at 8:54 pm Permalink
Chris, it was shorter than last week.
June 30, 2008 at 8:55 pm Permalink
…and then they done gone and sing horribly again. They are too young and need to go.
June 30, 2008 at 8:55 pm Permalink
I’m thinking Laura and Sophie are going home next week.
June 30, 2008 at 8:56 pm Permalink
That was positively the worst song in this competition.
June 30, 2008 at 8:57 pm Permalink
Yep, Megan Mullins is still twice as good as any of these people.
June 30, 2008 at 8:59 pm Permalink
i gotta go with pearl heart, shawn, and gabe this week as my top three (not in that order).
June 30, 2008 at 8:59 pm Permalink
Steele certainly guaranteed that L&S are going home next week. He sounded like a coach just announcing varsity cuts by telling his youngest ‘players’ that they’re going to the JV squad.
June 30, 2008 at 8:59 pm Permalink
Well, it wasn’t as terrible as past shows, but still leaves a lot to be desired.
June 30, 2008 at 9:00 pm Permalink
Matt B., which version of Catherine Britt’s “Drive In Movie” cover of the Fred Eaglesmith song did you listen to? Catherine did it on her debut “Dusty Smiles and Heartbreak Cures” and again of her recent Brett Beavers Nashville album “Little Wildflower”? Just curious…….
June 30, 2008 at 9:00 pm Permalink
When John Rich mentioned that Randy Owen was in the audience, it looked like embarrassed that the nation knew that he was actually watching this show. lol

June 30, 2008 at 9:01 pm Permalink
Rick,
The Brett Beavers version. It’s probably more ’smooth’ than the other. It’s @ my Rougstock audio page for others interested.
June 30, 2008 at 9:01 pm Permalink
I think Pearl Heart has to go.
June 30, 2008 at 9:05 pm Permalink
Wow, Chris, Billy Ray has adopted his wife’s daughter, uh, I mean son?
June 30, 2008 at 9:08 pm Permalink
Unfortunetly for Laura and Sophie, votefortheworst.com is not endorsing Nashville Star.
June 30, 2008 at 9:13 pm Permalink

June 30, 2008 at 9:08 pm Permalink
laura and sophie are HORRIBLE!!they shouldnt even be on the show.alyson didnt do her best but she still did way better than laura and sophie..they sound like crap when they sing together..GOOD LUCK ALYSON YOU’LL DO GREAT IN THE FUTURE..KEEP YOUR HEAD HIGH
….
Alyson, if this type of fan, who can’t even spell “anonymous” correctly or post it on the correct NS blog, is your fan, you’re in for a short career.
June 30, 2008 at 9:49 pm Permalink
One of the duo girls was horrible the other one was good. I think Jeffrey said it best, “I don’t know what’s going on but you both need to forget it and work on this 100%” I think the girls are not the best of friends right now and it’s showing up in their singing.
My fav: Pearl Heart and Gabe
June 30, 2008 at 10:42 pm Permalink
i watched the last 10 minutes of the show tonight. i could’ve cried thinking “this is what they picked? the whole country, this is what they picked? what did they throw out every singer with any talent? i could pick people 10 times better in my town!” i think they really screwed up with who they picked.
seeing billy ray’s family at the end just gave me this thought of 2 - 4 years and miley will be in and out of rehabs for drugs & alcohol, having car accidents weekly. give her 10 years, and she’ll be shaving her head.
June 30, 2008 at 10:51 pm Permalink
I’m not bummed about missing amateur hour this week, but I’m bummed about missing out on the live blog, which is infinitely more entertaining. Maybe next week.
Incidentally, Vote For The Worst isn’t endorsing anyone on this show officially (it’s Canadian Idol season), but if they did, it would have been Tommy Stanley.
June 30, 2008 at 11:42 pm Permalink
This season’s a train wreck that my friend and I can’t stop watching! Every week we vow to give up, yet we can’t. It’s sooo bad it’s like some text book case study in how not to retool a perfectly good cable show as a major network series. Where did they find these amateurs? In Nashville alone there must be countless struggling young singers with far more talent. Not one of these amateurs has a voice that should be anywhere near primetime television. And why is John Rich being such an a**hole now, like he had no hand in picking these singers? We’re sitting here saying out loud.. umm John if you didn’t think they were country singers then why are they on the show to begin with?
July 1, 2008 at 12:47 am Permalink
Which song did pearl heart sing tonight?
July 1, 2008 at 8:17 am Permalink
Matt B.: I don’t know that I agree with your assessment of Alyson’s career based on her fans spelling. From the websites I have seen Rascall Flats’ fans helped but “prolly” and “h8ters” on the map and it hasn’t hurt them.
July 1, 2008 at 8:24 am Permalink
I agree with Courtney in that I just watch and think that even in my small circle of the world, I can find better artists than these supposedly chosen out of what? Thousands? NS is an embarrassment to country music, sadly.
While I tend to agree with John Rich on the content of his “judging,” he is such a pompous ass. His harsh critiques are neither witty nor challenging. Sure, Coffey is awful, but it isn’t as though he just became so and before sounded country. So to viciously go after him and some of the others, most especially on the night their families are there, saying how they don’t “belong” on NS due to not being “country enough”, when it’s been pretty obvious that no one outside of Gabe really does belong on NS as far as genre is concerned, just comes across as pompous grandstanding. Considering the source, though, I shouldn’t be surprised. Point being the show cast all these people and put them in the top ten. If anyone deserves Rich’s ire, it’s the producers and/or talent agencies cast this mess.
Oh, and Matt C, I don’t care for most of Carrie Underwood’s music, especially that “So Small” song that is sleep-inducing, but she wasn’t off pitch in that commercial with the horse and of all the things to criticize her about, her technical vocal abilities isn’t one.
Otherwise, interesting blog.

LeeAnn S.,
I agree with your assessment.
Walter,
“This season’s a train wreck that my friend and I can’t stop watching! Every week we vow to give up, yet we can’t.”
That’s my problem too.

Dang, I missed the live blog and the show this week. Hope to catch it when it re-airs on CMT. My cable and internet have been out since Saturday morning. So bummed to have missed the chat but I read all the comments. Sounds like I might actually like this week :)
