Little Jimmy Dickens Recovering From Surgery for Brain Injury
- Music City TV is reporting that Little Jimmy Dickens is recovering in a Nashville area hospital following surgery to repair a subdural hematoma. Other than that, there’s not much info, but the family asks for your thoughts and prayers.
- Melonie Cannon‘s duet with Willie Nelson on “Back to Earth,” a song that was picked as the top of song of October ’08, is being sent to radio as Cannon’s new single.
- The Randy Rogers Band is set to make their Late Show debut tonight, where they’ll be performing “Wicked Ways.”
- Speaking of debuts, Patty Loveless will grace the stage at A Prairie Home Companion for the first time this Saturday (Jan. 17).
- Ashlie Kolb interviewed country singers and NASCAR drivers for the 18th episode of Nashville At Nite. The country singers include Crystal Shawanda, Danielle Peck, Gabe Garcia, Rick Huckaby, and Kate and Kacey Coppola.
- Accomplished bluegrass singer, songwriter, bandleader, and popular radio host Chris Jones eulogizes the passing of his former band mate, Butch Baldassari:
There have been many times since Weary Hearts were together when I’ve thought to myself, ‘what would Butch say in a situation like this?,’ and it’s likely he would have said something insightful and funny. He had very little use for the cliches and standard assumptions of the business, instead creating his own ‘conventional wisdom’ (or maybe ‘Baldo’s Wisdom’), which often enabled him to see things more clearly and pinpoint the heart of the situation.
- Garth Brooks and Jennifer Nettles are among a group of singers scheduled to perform at an inaugural celebration in Washington on Sunday.
- CMT‘s Craig Shelburne laid out ten indie albums worth checking out in early ’09, and in a separate blog article, he listed several of his favorite albums from the ’90s and early ’00s.

- Paste magazine’s Andy Whitman relays a few particulars about A Man of Somebody’s Dreams: A Tribute to the Songs of Chris Gaffney, which will be released March 31.
These are sad, poignant, joyous, stomping songs…performances vary from tender, accordion-laced Tex-Mex ballads to Bakersfield honky tonk to blues-based rockers to pleading Philly soul. It’s a fair cross-section of Chris’s music, but more than that, it’s a long overdue showcase for a criminally underappreciated songwriter.

The first single from Neko Case‘s new album, Middle Cyclone, will be “People Got A Lotta Nerve.” And to promote the single, her record label, Anti-, will donate five dollars to Best Friends Animal Society for every blog that reposts the song and one dollar for every iLike user that adds the song to his/her profile.

I hope Jimmy ends up alright. There’s not many of the old guard left nowadays.
With all due respect to Melanie Cannon, releasing a duet with Willie Nelson is not a good way to get played on the radio, unless you’re singing about giving your horses alcohol.

Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for Little Jimmy!
I’ll pull a Rick here and say that I saw that Country Weekly’s not only going to be an actual weekly periodical (good for Chris N I suspect) but it’s also dropping all it’s Subscribers. So while I applaud the move to the weekly format, I’m skeptical about dropping the subscribers.

bold move on CW’s part, but I was never that impressed in the year I had a subscription. Maybe this will make it better….?

As the article mentions, Country Weekly is cutting the amount of published issues it makes, leading to a cost savings on paper (and probably time using the press). It’s cutting the price to presumably entice people to buy it more frequently, now that it’s publishing weekly.
The print media industry sucks right now. Newspapers and magazines are doing whatever they have to in order to stay in business. I’m sure CW’s accountants have looked at the scenarios and have determined that the cost savings of publishing more often with fewer copies outweighs the loss of revenue from subscribers.

Ok – so subscriptions were UP last year and newsstand sales were DOWN and they are dropping subscribers for newsstands only? Sure doesnt sound logical to me. And I’ll surely take a refund rather than transfer to one of the other magazines they offer (that I’ve never heard of).
Hey, now I can save money too. I’ll just flip through it, see if Anthony’s in there, and if not I wont buy it!

More copy is good for you. And for your sake, I hope CW continues to soldier on. Actually, it’s good for anyone who works in the industry (writing or recording) if CW continues to publish.

That’s what I was wondering too Sam. Also, by the time the magazine is actually published, most of the news is “old” already anyway, thanks to the internet. But it’s always nice for those of us who want a ‘hard copy’ to keep.

It’s really confusing to me that CW would drop the subscription end of the business for newsstand sales only – which are definitely going to be very unsteady. I just hope this doesn’t mean the end of the magazine …

The print industry has taken a huge hit as of late and most publications who then try to switch over to the internet can’t pull the same amount of profit from their websites.
I think Country Weekly has enough of an older readership who doesn’t want to read stuff on a PC where they can stay alive. There are many other music magazines who are falling apart because most of their readership is 15-25 where they would rather read it on a PC or mobile device. I do find the newsstand thing kind of interesting though as I know many older readers who are going to hate not getting it at their doorstep every other week. I guess right now though businesses in every industry are just trying to hold on and rough this out.
