Little Jimmy Dickens Celebrates 90; Shania Twain Announces Engagement; Country Music Hall of Fame Plans Expansion
- Little Jimmy Dickens turned 90 on Sunday.
- Shania Twain is engaged, and has been for a couple of months now, to Frédéric Thiébaud. She announced the engagement on her website this morning.

- Craig Havighurst has an article on NPR about the songwriting system in Nashville and the cycle a song generally takes from the creation to final cut. In one of the more interesting parts, he notes that a song on an album that sells a million copies would generate about $100,000, which would then be split between the songwriters and publishers. Radio hits generate even more — a lot more. It sounds like a sweet gig, but Havighurst says the system is under pressure:
Shorter radio playlists and the collapse in CD sales have made lucrative hits scarcer than ever. The city’s top songwriting association estimates there are only about a quarter as many staff writers on Music Row today as there were a decade ago.

- Easton Corbin on familial support:
My dad watches the charts more than I do. I mean, he’ll call me up and tell me where it’s at on the charts. He doesn’t know how to get on the computer, but my stepmom does, and he does it through her. He has no idea how to run the computer. It’s funny, we were No. 4 at one time, and we kind of dropped back to five, and he called me and said, “Son, I just want to let you know you were No. 4, but it looks like you’re No. 5 now. I wonder if somebody made a mistake on that chart or something. You might need to point it out to somebody.” And I said, “Dad, don’t worry. They know what they’re doing. Trust me.”

I just knew it was a matter of time that Justin Bieber would rear his head at country radio. If his duet with Rascal Flatts, then that duet with Taylor Swift couldn’t very far away either. I’d have the Perry brothers sing a duet together than Justin Bieber trying to sing which he can’t very much.
And this Flatts-Fest will probably consist of your average everyday pop country artists: Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, you know those people who are knocking on country radio’s door who don’t have much to do with country music than to be hangers on to everything.

*If his duet with Rascal Flatts is any consideration.

At the Birchmere here in the DC area, a ticket for “An Acoustic Evening with John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett” costs $122! That better be a darn good show.

Brody, thanks for the Jason Eady video- love that new track. It’s an interesting contradiction to Paisley’s current single, “This Is Country Music.”

I know I’ve read this young man Easton Corbin has a wife. Has anyone ever seen her or heard him talk of her. Is this another Billy Ray Cyrus situation where his label wanted him to keep Tish a secret?? He is coming to our city for a concert and if thats the case and was left up to me he can sang to empty seats.

Joe’s album is great; I’m really proud to have a song I wrote with Tim Stafford on there.

PT: You don’t hear much about Joe Nichols’ wife either so Easton might not be alone in him talking about his wife that much. There might be a few females in country music in which the same thing is happening (wives not sharing about their husbands)
December 21, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Lewis, you maybe right about the females, but Joe has his wife on red carpets and they sat on front row at this year’s ACM Awards and he talks about her on twitter to the fans. Infact I’ve heard him say she and Miranda Lambert came from the same area in Texas and same back grounds. She is out on the road with Joe quite abit. I’m not saying Easton needs keep his wife out there all the time, but seems strange to me we never see her. We know he is cute and these young girls buy the tickets!!

Or maybe he wants to keep his private life private.

PT, if you visit the link in the roundup, the interviewer specifically asks about his wife.

Way to pat yourself on the back.

@ Jon – Congratulations!
@ Chickett – If I had a song on there I’d say so too. (In fact, if it’d been me I’d probably have YELLED it in ALL CAPS, but Jon apparently has more restraint than I do).
You know, for all the folks who like to say “well, you dont know what you’re talking about unless you’ve actually done it.” Well, Jon has done it.

Way to pat yourself on the back.
Thanks! If it had been mentioned in the press release, I wouldn’t have had to do it myself ;-).

Thanks Brody!!

Wow, how did a band I like as much as the Tejas Brothers wind up on that Galleywinter Best of 2010 list? Oh, its because they aren’t Red Dirt in the slightest way and yet squeaked in somehow due to musical integrity and a great live show! Whew, I thought I was slipping…
So J.R. Journey ranks Sunny Sweeney’s “From A Table Away” as his # 1 song of 2010! I must say those writers over at “My Kind Of Country” do get it right now and again. (lol) Sunny has posted a link to a video of a live, acoustic version of “Stayin’s Worse Than Leaving” on her Facebook music page, so I wonder if that will be the next single? darn, I was hoping for “Drink Myself Single”. Oh well.

I love the Carolin Chocolate Drops album. It’s really cool that they’re on the NPR list. I just wish they would make it over my way on their tour- they seem like they would be an amazing group to see live.
December 22, 2010 at 12:17 pm
You’re surely right about that, Alison. You have to see the Chocolate Drops to fully appreciate them–not least because there’s dancing, playing the bones, and other vaudeville involved. But also because the full range of their instrumental and vocal chops gets put on display (still) more than in the studio. So I hope you get your wish,. We had a full show here in Nashville a few weeks back.

Rascal Flatts collaborated with Justin Bieber
Isn’t that illegal under the Genevia Convention?
