Leona Atkins Passed Away; Tim McGraw/Danielle Peck Have Their Days; Stream Joe Nichols
- Leona Atkins, widow of Chet Atkins, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 85.
- A Truer Sound reviewed James McMurtry’s concert in Blacksburg, VA last week, where he was glad to play for a dancing crowd following his tour of Europe where the audience was mostly immobile. “They’re good people,” he said of his UK fans, “they just don’t move.” McMurtry wasn’t quite as enamored with the crowd at Mercy Lounge in Nashville on Tuesday, according to CMT’s Chris Parton:
But when that artist tells the biggest fans in the room to “Shut the f*** up,” “Go to the back of the room or I won’t keep singing” and walks off the stage during the encore because said fans were singing along to his song, I’m not inclined to listen anymore. Especially since earlier in the show he invited everyone to the foot of the Mercy Lounge stage to dance and get wild. Which one is it? Maybe these fans weren’t models of concert etiquette, but that doesn’t excuse a grown man’s temper tantrum. McMurtry is not new to this game and we were not in a library. And if I wanted to pay to get cussed at and made to feel uncomfortable … well I just don’t want to do that.
- McMurtry wasn’t the only artist to walk out on a performance. At two recent concerts, Keith Urban left the stage, ran outside, and jumped in a taxi.
- Some books, or CDs in this case, can accurately be judged by their covers.
- DFW.com’s Preston Jones on the new Ronnie Fauss three-song EP I Can’t Make You Happy, which can be streamed on his MySpace: “Ranging from the brutally confessional title track to the jaunty menace of One Eye Open, Fauss continues to build a body of work that will appeal to anyone who likes sentiments direct and instrumentation spare.”
- CMT is streaming Joe Nichols‘ newest record, Old Things New.
- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn declared Oct. 20 Tim McGraw Day for recognizing the impact that Americans of Southern birth have had on America in the title track of his new album and for his interest in giving back to the community. No word on why Oct. 17 was christened Danielle Peck Day in Zanesville, Ohio.
- John Rich plans on naming his baby Cash and the expected delivery date is Jan. 7.
- Watch The Belleville Outfit perform “Sunday Morning” at Music Fog.
- Country Universe’s Kevin J. Coyne kicked off his list of the worst singles of the decade with numbers 50 through 41.
- Kenny Chesney doesn’t think people realize how much works goes into one of his tours.
- The Bluegrass Blog shared attendance numbers from this year’s World Of Bluegrass and Fan Fest and compared them to last year’s numbers, and even back to 2005’s numbers. With the exception of the awards show, it’s been mostly downhill.
- Zac Brown on meeting Darrell Scott:
“I told him his own name, and then I ran away like Napoleon Dynamite with my arms by my side,” Zac tells The Boot. “I was like, ‘Hey, Darrell …’ He said, ‘How are you doing?’” I was like, ‘Uh … you’re Darrell Scott … my friend Matt, you know my friend, Matt.’ He said, ‘Oh, yeah?’ I said, ‘Yeah, my friend Matt plays bass with you sometimes.’
- Share a Halloween story with the folks at My Kind of Country and you could win a copy of Patty Loveless‘ 16 Biggest Hits disc and her recent Mountain Soul II record. That’s just the kind of mood they’re in.
- Watch Kris Kristofferson play “Closer to the Bone” in the studio.
- Carrie Underwood likens Twitter to organized stalking.
- In his latest blog post, Tom Russell describes the whirlwind tour following the release of his recent album Blood and Candle Smoke and the taping of Letterman.

Cash Rich? Hoo boy.
October 22, 2009 at 11:04 am Permalink
So … Cash Rich. *facepalm*
October 22, 2009 at 11:21 am Permalink
I guess it could have been “Incredibly F. Rich.”
October 22, 2009 at 11:43 am Permalink
@ ChrisN — I just love it when you say *facepalm* — It’s such an appropriate expression. :-)

I prefer *headdesk*.

Nichols’ song “An Old Friend of Mine” could be the best I’ve heard this year.

I don’t know what I ever did before I discovered *facepalm* — it pretty much sums up my state of mind most of the time.

or “Incredibly F. N. Rich”

How about a nice Christian name like Cash Les Rich? Yep…facepalm (big sigh).

That kid is gonna be in for a world of hurt in school with a name like Cash Rich…

Hidden between all these anti-Rich posts M.C. posts about Nichols’ single. Doubt the radio-heads will play it but man is it moving. Oh wait, how can anything be moving except teeny-pop not-so-Swift, Kenny Cheesy, Urbanish, Saltland, Rascall too-Flatts, etc???
I don’t know what’s wrong with me. For a minute I thought a song that sounded country was good – What was I thinkin’ Dierks?
Oh what’s a boy like me supposed to do? I can’t do the Americana thing as that is a clandestine organization for mostly liberals. Radio has become the enemy rather than the solution.
Oh well, let me pop in Don Williams’ Greatest Hits CD. Better hurry though as CD’s are disappearing fast as a way to listen to ALBUM music. I think the Illuminati is behind it all. One-world government and one-world musical genre. Can’t we all just get along?
P.S. Keep up the good work Joe Nichols. You area rarity among newer artists.

And Cash Rich will grow up to change his name, beat the crap out of his aging father who will be sitting alone after running off everyone with his ego in that over the top house of his still wearing the fur coat that only has one fur patch left of it….then the younger Rich will join the house band at Jared Ashley’s club in New Mexico.

“I can’t do the Americana thing as that is a clandestine organization for mostly liberals”
Waynoe, this statement is not entirely true. Americana by definition is a broad genre, and unlike some genres we typically don’t care about political affiliations so long as the music is good. You should check out artists like Chris Knight, Charlie Robison, Billy Joe Shaver, The Steeldrivers, Wayne Hancock, Dale Watson just to name a few. I’m not saying those guys are flag wavin’ land pavin’ rush lovin’ soul savin’ gay bashin’ leaders of sale….but they are certainly not tree huggin’ peace lovin’ pot smokin’ barefootin’ porn watchin’ folk singin’ hippies like Todd Snider ;-P

Funny, thats exactly how I was when I met Darrell Scott. Only, I dont have a friend that plays bass for him.

Truersound,
I am knowledgeable of these artists. On an artist by artist comparison, my earlier comment still sticks though you are right in that there are varying degrees.
Yes, not all artists are in that arena. Ricky Skaggs and Charlie Daniels have been honored among them, but they are in the minority.
I will say that the American artists are talented out the wazoo. I wouldn’t let my fellow conservative know this but Emmylou was always my favorite female artist.

Waynoe. Feel bad for you. What do you do when you listen to The Highwaymen? Fast forward past Kristofferson’s & Willie’s verses while only listening to half of Cash’s?
I would hate to live a world where one could only listen to music within their political safe zones.

Is there more than one source for baby Rich’s alleged name? (Though poor kid if it’s true.)
October 22, 2009 at 4:57 pm Permalink
Stormy, you mean Cash Rich will have slushies thrown in his face throughout life! That is just sooo sad…
The “Danielle Peck Day” was just an excuse to get a pretty girl to town for some photo ops with city officials. Can’t say I blame them.
I’m sure glad Jessie at Music Fog likes The Belleville Outfit as the band’s unique music style just isn’t likely to have broad market appeal.
I really disagree with some of Kevin Coyne’s first batch of “worst singles”. The list should be called “Singles Kevin Hates” instead. I like “19 Somethin’”, “Who’s Your Daddy”, and “Lookin For a Good Time” and consider those some of the respective artist’s most enjoyable single releases thus far. Crikey…

poor Cash Rich. He’s gonna have a blast in middle school!

I wonder what Rosanne Cash has to say about the baby’s name – she sure didn’t like John Rich’s attempt to pirate her father’s legacy. (honestly, that was the first thing I thought when I read the story – I have an archivist mind, not a wordplay mind, and I didn’t even realize what a hideous name it is on that level.) Once the full awfulness of it was pointed out, I started thinking that the kid is probably going to be embarassed by his father if he had named him Bill or George or any damn thing but Cash.

Rick: Or possibly knock up his best friend’s girl and be forced to date a hot Jewish chick (so his mom won’t equate him with Nazis) before he gets a slushie thrown at him.

I’m not sold on Joe Nichols.

Waynoe, I’m a flag wavin’ tea baggin’ (ummm ok maybe not)… all that red-blooded stuff conservative and I love Americana. Give it a shot. Steve Earle’s the only one who really overdoes the politics, imo.
Mayor Jobob, I’m sure Cash Rich will be adept at smashing people in the face with rootbeer bottles by junior high. He’ll be fine.

Faire enough, rick. come on over and tell him to his face then.:)
October 23, 2009 at 12:17 am Permalink
I’m with Trailer. I can make Rush look like a liberal sometimes, and I listen to more Americana music than anything else. Darrell Scott and Scott Miller get more airtime in my house than Toby Keith ever will. I will add to Trailer’s Steve Earle warning. As long as you stay away from “The Revolution Starts:Now”, and you should be good to go.

Well its nice to know I have some fellow conservatives that are regular participants here! Unlike Great Garbo I no longer feel so alone! (lol)

yep, JR couldnt help himself. My 2 yr old is named Cash, and now he will likely want to go by his middle name, William…uh oh. Cash “Bill”.
Cash “Bill” also was really freaked out when he saw the twin Vercher brothers sitting next to each other at a BBQ shack in Austin…thats just a little something extra.

Trailer & Idlewildsouth,
I appreciate your coherent thoughts among the rubbish here. Have you heard the Galway Girl song Earle penned? It’s fantastic and his version of the song is good as well.
I still stand by my earlier comments about most of the Americana artists but as I said earlier, they are very talented. Yes, they deserve to be heard.
To Truersound,
You blatantly show your ignorance on your post as Cash was as liberal as Kris or Willie. Read his biography and autobiography. Please deepen your knowledge before posting definitive statements. Don’t mean to be harsh, but just know your stuff.
October 23, 2009 at 11:21 am Permalink
That’s why he said “half of Cash’s part”, because Cash was not all liberal and not all conservative. You should know your stuff before blanketly calling him a liberal.
October 23, 2009 at 11:31 am Permalink
Leeann,
Sorry but I have studied him. I would agree that not every main “bullet point” of liberalism he matched on, but far more than not. This of course has nothing to do with his talent and position within the lore of music. I am only responding to an uneducated post.
We’ll leave it at that.
October 23, 2009 at 12:12 pm Permalink
It’s funny who you call out as uneducated around here.
October 23, 2009 at 6:20 pm Permalink
I think I’d rather be called uneducated than liberal!!
October 23, 2009 at 8:12 pm Permalink
@Stormy: There’s plenty of reasons why John Rich’s child may get beaten up, and being named “Cash” would be towards the bottom on my list lol
