Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood Lead ACM Nominees; Billy Joe Shaver Trial Date Set
- If you had any lingering doubts about Lady Antebellum‘s rising status, put ‘em to rest. The nominees for the Academy of Country Music Awards were announced and the trio earned not five nominations like Taylor Swift, or six like Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood, but a total of seven nominations. Off-camera nominees were announced as well.

New releases for the week of March 2, 2010 include:
- Back in high school John Rich gave a demo tape of himself performing a song called “Back To You” to a classmate in exchange for a small fluorescent painting of a cactus playing a guitar, which was to serve as cover art. That demo tape, minus the fluorescent cactus, is up for bid on eBay.
- Somebody thought it was a good idea to film a Gary Allan interview while he was being tattooed.
- With a camera in tow, Bryan Simpson and Matt Menefee of the national American touring band Cadillac Sky took to the neighborhood streets of Zumbrota, Minnesota to promote a local show. The results were mixed.
- Billy Joe Shaver‘s trial for allegedly shooting Billy Coker in the cheek back in 2007 is scheduled for April 5.
- Marty Stuart introduced the Mississippi Country Music Trail yesterday in Tupelo. The trail consists of a series of markers spread across the state featuring 30 musicians, including Elvis Presley, Jimmie Rodgers, Charley Pride, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, and Stuart himself. (via reader email)
- Barry Mazor reviewed the Tom T. Hall-directed DVD Who Shot Lester Monroe:
It is, a lot of the time anyway, very funny. As the title suggests, it’s a murder mystery, sort of, involving the death of the vaguely familiar but unsurprisingly forgotten imaginary bluegrass luminary Lester Monroe. The pace overall is far from hard-driving, but the laconic, mainly improvised scenes have their own charm [...]
- Farce the Music: Top 10 Things Easton Corbin is not more country than.
- Preview Bucky Covington‘s new song “A Father’s Love (The Only Way He Knew How).”
- Stuart Munro on the new Easton Corbin record:
The ballads (“Lonely Town’’), in particular, capture the melancholy so typical of Strait. All of that makes for a solid debut, and it’s more than enough to manifest Corbin’s potential. But since the world already has a George Strait, it also raises the question whether, next time out, Corbin will capitalize on that potential and begin to become his own man.
- Six past performers playing country singers have been nominated for Oscars, and three have won: Sissy Spacek, Robert Duvall, and Reese Witherspoon. The question remains, will Jeff Bridges join them?
- Listen to “Care” and “Island” from the new Austin Collins album at The Gobblers Knob.
- The website Mindi On Music posted a brief interview with Tracy Lawrence on the subject of his recent music.
- The Bear Family Records release Country & Western Hit Parade: Dim Lights, ThickSmoke, and Hillbilly Music, 1951-1955 nearly earned a perfect rating.
- EPs have been popular with smaller, independent musicians for a while now, but will Blake Shelton‘s new “Six Pak” album help accelerate the marketing trend among major-label artists?
- The Texas Music Matters song of the day is “Who’s To Blame, Senorita?” by the Texas Tornados.
- 78 Things You Didn’t Know About Johnny Cash (via That Nashville Sound)
After an oil leak from Jesse James [the camper Cash used for his amphetamine binges in the desert] set the Los Padres National Wildlife Refuge on fire, Cash became the only person ever successfully sued by the U.S. for starting a forest fire.

That young lead guitarist with Nudie & The Turks was laying down some smoking licks! It appears the spirit of the Bakersfield Sound is alive and well in Canada! And here I thought the ghost of traditional country music left Nashville for Texas when instead it headed to the Great White North! Crikey, mate!
I’b much rather see Lady Antebellum be the future of Contemporary Country than Taylor Swift as their vocals are at least enjoyable and they tackle adult themes. Hopefully Taylor Swift will remain firmly lodged in her glass slippers and fade from prominence…
Its heard to take Cadillac Sky too seriously when their biggest claim to fame is being featured on the soundtrack of Disney’s “Race to Witch Mountain”. I’ve seen them live and they were okay but left no lasting impression.
Trailer’s list of things more country than Easton Corbin is a total hoot. I’m guessing the person behind the handgun mailbox is not an Obamavoter!

My only issue with Lady A is that they’ve got more buzz (unfairly) than Zac Brown, who are about 10x the band LA is. Seems like Lady A is set to take over as the “It” band in Country music, when really, ZBB is far greater.

… blake shelton going the twitter-way when it comes to release a new album(?) should help solving his biggest problem: making a record without too many fillers.

I love Gary Allan. He sing- talks but in tune (cough, cough Taylor) and has raw emotion. His songs are so real. Not into tats but..still love the guy.
ACM’s. Entertainer of the Year. What a free for all voting frenzy with 8 nominations. Well, if Carrie fans (including myself) are honest. She didn’t do a tour last year. Sure she did about everything else but a tour..but you gotta do a tour in my book. So hopefully all the fans will vote for someone else. If Taylor gets it, I’m not surprised for sheesh..the girl is still touring. But it’d be a hoot if Zak Brown got it. They have my vote.
You all know my thoughts on vocalist awards so I won’t bore you.
Top Vocal Duo is interesting: Will they give it to sentimental favorite Brooks and Dunn? Or shoo in’s “Sugarland”? Personally, I’d love Joey and Rory to get it.

I hope Miranda Lambert wins several of those awards she’s nominated for… she probably has a good chance of winning Album of the Year after Crazy Ex-Girlfriend winning it, and this album being even better
March 2, 2010 at 5:02 pm
Miranda Lambert has a good chance to win atleast 1 award. And this album is a whole lot better than crazy ex girlfriend. I checked on mediabase and The House That Built Me was at #40 and it hasn’t been released yet. It should do really well on the charts.
March 2, 2010 at 5:05 pm
My vote goes to Carrie for Entertainer!!! She deserves it!
March 2, 2010 at 7:08 pm
I love Stuart Munro’s comment about the Easton Corbin album: “The ballads (“Lonely Town’’), in particular, capture the melancholy so typical of Strait.” Wow, I always mistook Boring George’s mood to be apathetic or detached in such songs. You learn something new every day!
That new Texas Tornados album is the best reason yet to go pick up the self-titled debut album from the Tejas Brothers. Sometimes its best if the “Mex” part of Tex-Mex music is predominate…
March 2, 2010 at 7:32 pm
I hope Miranda Lambert wins bunches and I hope Eli Young Band wins Top New Vocal Group, but I’m sure they won’t. Speaking of Gary Allan’s tats, I’m not a big tat fan, but I’m not offended by them. I like the one on his hand. It looks cool on him!
March 3, 2010 at 12:40 am
Despite the fact that I love Carrie Underwood more than Miranda, I think it’s time that Miranda gets recognized for excellent work. I do hope Taylor Swift won’t win the female vocalist category. We’ve had enough embarrassment this past 2 award shows. The ACM can correct that..
March 3, 2010 at 7:10 am
I agree aljid, Taylor Swift has embarrassed a lot of people buy winning VOCAL awards. And what insult that was that really can sing on key, sound good, and don’t sing about fairy tales and high school drama.
March 3, 2010 at 8:27 am
pop country is really where the money at… i can still remember when point of grace was just a pop band.. now they’re becoming the new SheDaisy?
March 4, 2010 at 12:29 pm
I agree with Simon-Carrie has been busy despite the fact that she wasn’t touring. I don’t think you need to be doing just that to be be nominated for EOTY. I just don’t understand the Taylor nominations especially for Female singer. Did the Academy not watch her performances, or lack of, at the CMT’s, VMA’s, and who could forget the Grammy’s!!! Please say it ain’t so and that Kanye is now gone!!!
March 7, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Taylor will win entertainer. With all her young fans, I don’t think anyone else has a chance. She actually deserves this one. Carrie might of had a chance if she had toured.
March 7, 2010 at 8:58 pm
Wow thanks for posting Nudie and the Turks – “The Pain in You”
I like what I hear :D
March 25, 2010 at 11:18 pm
I hope Taylor Swift win the entertainer of the year. Don’t get me wrong. I know she can’t sing but she did really entertain and made people known country more last year. ‘Fearless’ did enjoy the critics and her fanbase is huge right now, so I know she’ll definitely win.
For female vocalist, I wish Miranda Lambert win cos’ she rocks!!!
