“Ireland” from Garth’s Fresh Horses is a great last track–its got this epic, larger than life, bigger than country feel about it. You listen to that whole album (an album, by the way, that is epic in its own right), and you come to that final track, and you hear this oddly majestic sounding Irish folk song, and I don’t think there’s ever been another artist who could have pulled that off.

My favorite Last Song is that other Patty Griffin cover by the Dixie Chicks, “Top of the World” from ‘Home.’

One element that complicates the Last Song discussion is the concept of hidden tracks. If they count, I’ll go with “Cold, Cold Earth” by Allison Moorer, from ‘The Hardest Part.’

I agree on “Ireland”, Jim. If you look at a few of his other albums they had some great Last Songs as well: “The Dance” from Garth Brooks, “The River” from Ropin’ the Wind, and “Belleau Wood” from Sevens.

I’ve never really paid attention to the order of the songs before, but one of my favorites is “Everyday Life” from Jason Boland & The Stragglers The Bourbon Legend. Then there’s “Seminole Wind” from John Anderson’s Seminole Wind.

I always appreciate a well-considered last song. It suggests some actual thought has been put into the record.

“Someday I’ll Lead The Parade” from Patty Loveless’ “The Trouble With The Truth” & Trisha Yearwood with her cover of “Til I Get It Right” on “Thinkin About You”
