Kellie Pickler – “Makin’ Me Fall In Love Again”

Kellie Pickler may be yet another blonde American Idol castoff harboring thick dreams and thin technical talent, but there’s more to her growing stature as a genuine country star than her bombshell looks and bubbly personality. Indeed, Picker’s approach to selecting music has, with only a couple of exceptions, been superb; she’s avoided the trap of picking songs she can’t sing, instead seeking out quirky material that fits her character.

Now seven singles and two big albums into her career, Pickler is still finding her comfort zone and proving herself more than a made from TV starlet. On her latest, the danceable, sway-with-your-babyable “Makin’ Me Fall In Love Again,” her vocals are more assured and confident than ever as she somehow breathes life into a set of generally abhorrent lyrics. Beyond the Together/Forever rhyme—which I’m pretty sure is derided on Page 1 of every songwriting how-to book ever written—there seems to have been only a modicum of linguistic effort expended by the trio of culpable songwriters.

It’s a testament to Pickler that she’s able to render this anything other than rubbish, let alone something that sounds fresh in spite of its high percentage of post-consumer product. “Makin’ Me Fall In Love Again” boasts unusually sparse production for a mainstream single of this nature, a fact which gives her blend of girlish charm and youthful sexiness enough room to really sell the hook. The lyrics may be atrocious, but she milks every ounce of soul from them, in the process producing something surprisingly convincing and surprisingly palatable.

Her vocal skills still leave a lot to be desired, and I presume that they always will. Pickler wasn’t gifted with a dynamic, fluid and explosive voice like many of her Idol peers. But as time goes by, she’s proving herself resilient and more musically savvy than most. After only two albums, she’s already taken a number of chances, stuck to her guns and produced some truly listenable, if not brilliant, new country music.

“Makin’ Me Fall In Love Again” is another solid addition to her catalog. And while we may not wish our artists only to aspire to “truly listenable” as opposed to brilliant, in Pickler’s case she’s continuously surpassed most observers’ expectations (including this one).

I love the groove of this song; I love the simple truth of the hook, and how it’s not beating me over the head with a moral lesson. And trite though it may be, it’s far from a heavy-handed effort. Pickler handles is with a deft touch.

Thumbs Up

Kellie does have a knack for selecting pop country songs with nice, hooky meoldies that are pleasant to listen to. Her vocal ability is at least passably competent, unlike say Taylor Swift, and on songs like “Santa Baby” she’s shown what she’s capable of when given the chance. I enjoy hearing Kellie live on the Opry but have no desire to purchase her music, this fine little ditty included.

PS – Its too bad Amie Comeaux wasn’t born years later so she could have been a contestant on American Idol, and avoided that tragic car accident…

Not bad. Certainly better than Carrie’s latest. In the latest round of country genre-altering pop starlet singles (Namely Taylor Swift’s ‘Fearless’, Carrie Underwood’s ‘Undo It’, and this song) I would have to say Kellie wins by a country mile.

It’s too bad that Carrie and Kellie can’t turn their talents to truly decent country music like Miranda Lambert has shown a nack for. (I left out Taylor for the simple reason that she has no talent.)

I think this is a great song choice for Kellie. And I would like to see it do well for her on the charts. Here’s my rundown of the big female country songs that are out, or have already come out:
The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert – This is the best song I have heard in a long time, if she doesn’t get a #1 and some awards for this song then there is seriously something wrong with the music business.
Undo It by Carrie Underwood -First off, VERY cheesy lyrics and once again another boy bashing song from Carrie. It also sounds kinda Popish; Is she trying to cross over with this one?
Makin’ Me Fall In Love Again by Kellie Pickler – Cute and feel good song. I think I will definitely turn it up and sing along any time it comes on the radio.

Good review. This isn’t one of my favorite Kellie Pickler songs but it’s fun and catchy and many people love it. She’s a great all around artist, and the best singing and songs always beats the most technical talent. Her song selection skills involve more than just picking songs because she co-wrote half of her songs.

I don’t agree that Kellie’s vocal skills leave a lot to be desired, they leave nothing to be desired. She always sings on key, pitch-perfect, and sounds great. She was gifted with a dynamic, fluid voice and delivery. I’m glad she reserves her power and isn’t as “explosive” as some of her peers. She doesn’t need to be nor do I want her to sing like that. Kellie is one the best singers and she’s as good as Miranda. Miranda just has a better producer who doesn’t overuse Pro Tools. They are equal country singers and Kellie is a better overall singer if you appreciate diversity and crossover ability. I like her singing country and she also does a great job with pop-rock and other types of songs like Santa Baby and the National Anthem. Have you ever been to a Pickler concert because she sounds better live without too much studio production. It’s the opposite scenario of Taylor Swift, who has slightly better production and sounds better vocally with studio polish. Kellie doesn’t need it.

As an aside, I’ve noticed that sometimes you bring up American Idol in a negative light and seem to be a little slanted against artists who were discovered that way. So it’s another testament to Kellie’s talent that you gave her a mostly positive thumbs up review. Kellie and Carrie are no more “made from TV starlets” than Miranda is. All of these artists have been singing for most of their lives. It’s a lot harder for girls to get a record deal in Nashville so I don’t blame them for going on TV to get them. Many signed artists wouldn’t make it on Idol. One of the girls Taylor sings with admitted she was cut in the auditions.

Decent effort – Kelly’s songs always seem to add up to more than the sum of the parts, which suggests a real skill (by someone) at picking material

Is this a Frank Lidell production? Really step up from the last record.

    I like.

Kellie’s one of those singers that I think has real potential, but I haven’t liked even one of her singles, not even this one. I have liked the covers that I’ve heard her do though, which is probably why I hold out hope for her.

So Leeann, you didn’t even like “Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind”? That was my favorite K.P. single thus far by a country mile.

No, Rick, I don’t like that song at all.

So, about that picture of Pickler above: Just my imagination, or is she playing up her femininity… with a giant dotted arrow on the front of her dress?

I strongly disagree with this review’s claim that Kellie Pickler lacks true talent. She is a vocal powerhouse! Her voice is amazing! I’m eagerly anticipating the release of her third album, which she promises will have more of a traditional country sound. I’m sure it will be awesome.

Nice review, Jim. I like the song, and I think it should do just as well as Kellie’s other singles, probably stopping somewhere between 10 and 20 on the charts. She still needs that breakout song, though, and I don’t think this is it.

I am surprised by this single selection. I thought for sure they would have chosen “Rocks Instead of Rice.” That one reminds me of “I’ll Think of a Reason Later” by Lee Ann Womack, and I think it’s better than this song.

@Steve Harvey: Its actually produced by Chris Lindsey, but her next album will be done w/ Miranda Lambert’s producers, so close but not quite ;)

…i have a soft spot for miss pickler and she’s doing quite ok on this one. however, to make this song a slightly more memorable listening experience you’d probably have to ask gloria estefan and the miami sound machine to give it a try. does the term “forced country” exist?

I have maintained for a very long time on this site, that history will reward Kellie Pickler. I fully believe that her personality, songwriting ability, and yes – vocals – will have her seen as a sort of “heir apparent” to Miss Dolly somewhere down the road.

For me, personally, I’d listen to a KP album before CU or TS any day.

Whoa, major non sequitur. “Who Is She To You” was sure a nice record, though.

How old is this song? I heard her sing this 2 years ago on the Opry. It’s a good song tons better than that “Didn’t you know how much I love you” I flip it everytime that song comes on..don’t like Kellie’s high register forced.

@Vicki: It’s from her self-titled sophomore album that was released in September 2008.
