Kellie Pickler Announces Engagement; Loretta Lynn & Willie Nelson Recordings Enter Library of Congress
- Kellie Pickler and songwriter Kyle Jacobs announced their engagement. Jacobs popped the question on June 15, the birthday of Pickler’s late grandmother.
- The New York Times‘ Jon Caramanica recapped Tuesday night’s four-hour concert, “Nashville Rising: A Benefit for Flood Recovery,” which was hosted by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. There was even a surprise appearance from Sandra Bullock.
- Jon Caramanica also reviewed a recent Elizabeth Cook gig in New York.
- Loretta Lynn‘s “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and Willie Nelson‘s Red Headed Stranger were among the 25 recordings named to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress on Wednesday.
- Kenny Chesney wants his next record to set the stage for the next phase of his music career in the same way he says No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems opened up the music he’s made for the past eight years. The record, due out on Sept. 28, pulls its name from the Guy Clark song “Hemingway’s Whiskey.”

One Night Music bills itself as a group of people that find talented independent artists and film them candidly performing a selection of their music in an intimate setting. Sounds pretty cool, like what Music Fog does or the American Songwriter Sessions. They recently filmed their first country performance — California artist Dave Gleason, who released an album last week titled Turn and Fade. TMZ had footage recently of Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest walking together hand in hand down the street somewhere! If that doesn’t prove they are “serious”, what would? (lol)
That’s quite a batch of good Music Fog videos today, and the Dave Gleason video from One Night Music is appreciated as well. Country artists based in SoCal need all the media exposure they can rustle up!
I saw Brennen Leigh perform in LA last night promoting her soon to be released new album and she put on a great show. Some of the new songs were co-written with Brennen’s pal Sunny Sweeney which earns big bonus points with me. Any fans of traditional country female artists should make the effort to see Brennen live if she comes out your way. You won’t be disappointed!

Throwing a spanner into the works here, but does anyone have a working definition of country music as a genre?
I am in desperate need of a referenced definition that generally defines country music and considers the common instruments, sound etc. I’ve done so much reading and I am yet to encounter a summarised definition in a paragraph/sentence. I realise how difficult it is to place this into a nutshell, trust me.
Any help would be much appreciated.

At the moment I am confronted with a definition that simply emphasises that there is no collectively understood definition and that no term (including country) has definitively encapsulated its essence – this is from one of the premiere country historians (Bill Malone).

You’re seeking something that doesn’t exist. Best course of action is to carefully consider the context for which you are trying to produce this definition and the function it is to perform, then act accordingly. The definition of country that you need to explain what kind of music you like to someone who’s never heard it is not the same as the definition you’d want for deciding what to include in an academic study of, say, production values in live country musc shows.
