Junior Brown Modeling New Show After 1960s Country Music Programs
- Word has it that guit-steel inventor Junior Brown shot three pilot episodes for the Junior Brown Show last Tuesday. Negotiations with possible outlets are just beginning, but the show is modeled after country music programs from the 1960s like The Porter Wagoner Show. “Along with selections from Brown’s catalog, each episode also spotlights a different special guest, thus far including the Quebe Sisters Band, Johnny Gimble, and gospel singer Mike Farris, whom Brown has dubbed ‘the Wheel.’”
- Apple announced that they have surpassed Wal-Mart as the top US music retailer, and MySpace Music is expected to launch any day to compete with them.
- Sarah Buxton says her interview with Bill Cody was the first time her ACM nomination for Top New Female Vocalist really felt real to her and she hopes her answers weren’t too candid. If you see the interview she wants your opinion on whether she needs more “stock answers.” Without seeing the interview I can say there’s no such thing as too candid, stock answers bore me.
- Willie Nelson’s publicist confirmed that his Fourth of July Picnic is headed to San Antonio, TX this year with performances from Ray Price and Merle Haggard. Johnny Bush told MySA.com that he’ll performing at the throwdown, too, along with David Alan Coe, Pat Green and Los Lonely Boys.
- This is Texas Music posted a few 30-second samples from Willie Nelson’s One Hell of a Ride box-set.
- Carrie Underwood extended her Carnival Ride tour into late June. Jason Michael Carroll will be replacing Josh Turner as the opening act for the new dates.
- Pete Freedman provided a free mp3 from Zane Lewis’s new album and wants to hear your thoughts about the track.
- Randy Owen and Sugarland are slated to perform free concerts in Las Vegas on the nights leading up to the ACM Awards.
- The New York Times has a new songwriting blog where the contributors — all accomplished songwriters — will attempt to “pull back the curtain on the creative process as they write about their work on a songs in the making.” Darrel Brown is one contributor and has co-written songs for LeAnn Rimes and Keith Urban. Roseanne Cash is another contributor.
- Robert Earl Keen is performing at the Final Four festivities in San Antonio on Monday.
- Fast forward to the 00:50 mark of this video to catch a glimpse of Taylor Swift’s tour bus, which sports a fireplace and a treadmill. (via ggcolumn)
- There’s been a lot of Willie related news lately and I can only assume that it will continue to increase as the icon closes in on his 75th birthday on April 30th. Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.

If Junior Brown can’t find outlets for his show, I hope he makes them available for online viewing. Fortunately for western swing fans here in Los Angeles the Quebe Sisters do like to play here as does the newly reunited Hot Club of Cowtown. Junior’s show sure sounds like a lot of fun.
Sarah Buxton has been blogging a lot on her MySpace site lately after a few months of relative inactivity, so its great to see her energized and back in action. I really hope she doesn’t start trying to inhibit her irrepressible and zany personality in interviews as it is so contrary to her nature. As the ultimate “Anti-Carrie Underwood” personality wise Sarah has a duty to full to maintain balance in the universe…..
Off Topic: Speaking of candor, in Amy Dalley’s latest MySpace blog she had this to say about finally getting out of her 5 year contract with the CURB label:
“I am so excited to have so many new and great things happening all at once. It has been a long time since I have felt so hopeful and happy to look forward to what is to come. I love the fact that Apple has passed Wal-Mart, but yet the record companies seem to fail to understand that it’s a market that isnt going away.
I use Rhapsody rather than iTunes, but I can safely say I havent bought a CD since I got the service.

Rick - I’ve heard a few not-so-good stories about Junior Brown, but I agree the show sounds like it’d be a good time. His music is top notch. And I’ll have to go check out Amy’s blog. I’ve subscribed to a few MySpace blogs but they’re usually not updated very often.
Mike W. - I don’t think the record companies like Apple because Steve Jobs is trying exercise too much control.
I have Rhapsody, too, but I’ve purchased way more CDs because of it. I like having the tangible product and actually owning something. I don’t have the Rhapsody mp3 player though and maybe I’d purchase less music if I did.

Brody-I just use the player. It costs me $13 a month basically, but I have such a short drive I rarely listen to much music in my car and I noticed I listened to the majority of my music on my home PC, so I just decided I would go with it rather than CD’s or iTunes.
I also love the fact I can listen to a lot of Austin bands I would never have been able to hear without ordering online. I live in Minnesota, so unless it’s an artist that is fairly “big” for Austin, such as Dale Watson, CCR, RRB, or someone along those lines, none of the stores carry their records.
