Judge Seals Future Documents In Eddy Arnold Paternity Case
- A Tennessee judge ordered all future documents relating to a paternity case against the estate of Eddy Arnold to be sealed. A California man, Christopher Edward Tanner, claimed that Arnold fathered him during an affair with his mother, who was a secretary at Arnold’s record label. The judge asserted that Arnold deserves to have his name untainted if the proceedings prove to be unsuccessful.
- A book released at the beginning of December, Pure Country: The Leon Kagarise Archives: 1961-1971, showcases rare photographs of classic country and bluegrass artists on the small backwoods stages of rural America’s outdoor music parks. It’s a collection that historian Charles Wolfe considered one of the richest discoveries in the history of American music. Check out some of the pictures at Process Media. (via CMT Blog)

In an era where most “country rock” consists of “rock” that is mysteriously and dubiously packaged as “country,” it is an absolute joy to hear a country record that rocks, but can never mistaken for anything but a sincere and forthright, down-home effort.

- We’re holding our own against some of the biggest names in music blogging at the 2008 Weblog Awards. As you know, The 9513 was selected as a finalist for Best Music Blog, and we’re currently in fifth place (out of 10) with a respectable 8.4% of the votes after day one. You can vote once every 24 hours between now and January 13th, and it’s the easiest thing in the world–it’s even easier than getting your record shelved indefinitely by Curb. Thanks for your support.

That is exactly why I love(d) Charles Wolfe so damn much. Even being dead can’t stop his enthusiasm for the people and music.
Ha.
God, I miss him.

Wow, some of those pictures really are remarkable. You certainly don’t see many color prints of George Jones, Ernest Tubb, or Cash, at those particular ages. Really cool.

Those pictures from “Pure Country”, and many others from the book, were being shown on a screen behind the stage at the Grand Ole Echo when Roni Stoneman performed there recently. Leon Kagarise obviously had a thing for Roni and her sister Donna as there is an entire chapter dedicated to the Stoneman’s and Roni and Donna are in most of them. Can’t say I blame him….
Wow, Craig Shelburne considers the Kelly Willis album “What I Deserve” as his favorite Texas album! Yikes! I bought a used copy once and almost went comatose before making it all the way through. Maybe Craig uses the album as a sedative when he needs to mellow out or go to sleep.
I’ll have to check out the NPR link for the Cherryholmes band and Carolina Chocolate Drops. I hope the Drops’ set includes the Beyonce song they cover as it kicks arse!

You read my mind, Sam! I wonder if I could hide a subliminal message in it somewhere :)

Sorry, Rick, I gotta disagree with you. I was pumped to see this album get some recognition after so many years. I wore this cd out, and even more, this CD cemented (even further) Willis as a force on the Texas concert circuit, before it was dubbed “Red Dirt”. This disc got her onto the Letterman show when she sang “I Have Not Forgotten You”…

I guess topping the charts after forcing “Bob That Head” on us and getting away with naming their tour after the song inflated Rascal Flatts’ heads to the point that they think Unstoppable is an apt title. Someone needs to start one of those chain emails–the ones that get forwarded a million times–saying that Rascal Flatts promotes promiscuity and casual fellatio and send it to every teenager’s mother they can find. Now that would be grand.

yes, promiscuity is grand indeed…

Kelly, I’m shocked that you and I disagree about a Texas music artist! (lol) “Rick Smack” strikes again…
Wowsers Brady, I don’t think I’ve seen you on the warpath like that before here at The 9513. I’d surmise from this that Rascal Flatts is not your current favorite country band. Let’s hope that the arrogance reflected in “Unstoppable” is the pride that goeth before the fall phase of their career.

Rick’s Random Tidbits: I’m not a big fan of so called “country” artists who came to Nashville via American Idol. I will make an exception for Miss Jordan Sparks who sang a Patsy Cline classic with the Time Jumpers this past Monday night at the Station Inn. Now that’s an American Idol alumni performance I could appreciate! Now if only they would have recorded it to offer online. Darn….

Rick’s Random Tidbits Part 2: Miss Loretta Lynn will be performing on both the Friday and Saturday Night Grand Ole Opry’s this week!
Other interesting artists performing include:
Friday Night: Randy Houser, Vince Gill, & Nashville Star winner Melissa Lawson (I thought her 15 minutes of fame had already expired. Hmmm…)
Saturday Night: Blake Shelton and The Wrights
Its pretty sad that having both Loretta and Blake on the same show doesn’t warrant a GAC “Opry Live” recording session these days.
