Josh Thompson – “Beer on The Table”
Unless you have a job like “ice cream taste-tester” or “country music journalist,” you probably have the occasional day where you’re not too wild about your line of work. But you toil for the man night and day to make money to spend on more enjoyable things. In Josh Thompson’s “Beer on the Table,” those things are booze and lotto tickets.
Thompson, a 30-something Wisconsin native, is best known for co-writing the title track of Jason Michael Carroll’s latest album, Growing Up Is Getting Old; now he’s on the other side of the microphone with his self-penned debut single.
The lyrics lean toward cringe-inducing, with couplets like “Eggs and bacon in my belly and a Folger’s coffee buzz/Good ol’ radar detector, it protects me from the fuzz,” but Thompson does a fine job on his delivery. His voice—reminiscent of Tim McGraw circa “Down on the Farm”—separates him from the five or six interchangeable young male rock-influenced country singers on the radio, though the song’s subject matter, and its production, courtesy of Jason Aldean’s producer, Michael Knox, places him firmly in that camp (this can be a good or bad thing, depending on the listener).
The arrangement, also vaguely reminiscent of early ’90s Tim McGraw, isn’t perfect: the banjo gets overpowered by drums and electric guitar during the chorus, but it’s easy to see the song’s appeal. Who doesn’t love a drinking song? Sure, “Beer on the Table” is the Bud Light of drinking songs, but it gets the job done.
Should Thompson continue down this road with subsequent singles (or worse, release an “I’m So Country” song next), the schtick will soon wear thin, but right now, this is a nice, lighthearted introduction to a new face.

A real singer like James Otto has seemingly become a “1 Hit Wonder” at Top 40 country radio and yet an inoffensive, pleasant single like this could do well. I also don’t get the picture associated with this guy that is attached here. Does anyone find that shot interesting or compelling? It looks like he’s waiting to audition for the Ruth Buzzi “old lady in the park” role in a “Laugh-In” movie and all he’s missing is the hair net. Hey Josh, do you want a Walnetto? (lol)

I would like you to post a picture of Ruth Buzzi on the park bench as Gladys Ormphby next to his picture. The readers will get a kick out of the comparison…
I’ve been married to Ruth Buzzi for nearly 31 years, and she enjoyed your description…
by the way, she’s a Texan now…

I like it. Fun. It’s a song you’re likely to hear on a Friday night at the bar for those blowing off a little steam.
You’re right, he does sound a lot like Tim McGraw.

Just wait until you hear some of Josh’s other songs that will be on his cd release in January. There are a lot of great songs that he has written or co-written. Even his early music rocks, but he is getting better every day and every show!! You will be delightfully happy come January!!!

Josh has more talent in his little pinky than most have bestowed upon them in a lifetime. He’s the real deal. Josh doesn’t just look sexy and sing a little, he writes his own music as well[which is more than can be said for most "artists" of this decade]. If you haven’t seen Josh live, please don’t judge. You have no idea what you’re missing. I agree with Nicole, don’t overlook this one, he’s a gem in a pile of stones. I’m looking forward to his CD release in January
