John Schneider Returns to Country Music; Two New Dolly Parton Projects Coming Soon
- John Schneider, one-half of the Duke brothers, is returning to country music after a two decade hiatus and he’s attributing his return to a song titled “The Promise.”
“Johnny [Cash] told me that one day, you’re gonna get back in the music and one day you’re gonna hear a song that you will have to record. And that’s the song that will bring you back into country music… He said, I don’t know what it is and I don’t know when you’re gonna hear it, but when you hear it, you’ll know.”
- Rolling Stone has a picture history of the life and times of badass legend Merle Haggard.
- In what is possibly one of Music Fog’s most fun videos yet, the Bellville Outfit performs “It’s a Good Day.”
- Gary Allan on his next album, Get Off on the Pain:
“I’m very proud of this album. It’s got a little bit of all my other albums in it, from ‘Smoke Rings [in the Dark]‘ to ‘Livin’ Hard,’ but it’s also got some new stuff that I’ve never tried before. There’s a song called ‘Kiss Me When I’m Down’ that really takes a left turn!”
- Farce the Music doesn’t farce around when it comes to Carrie Underwood’s latest single: “It’s possibly the furthest thing from country ever played on country radio. This is a pop song – that is a matter of fact and there is no room for debate.”
- Hear Ya and The Gobblers Knob are diggin’ the new solo album from Pete Bernhard, frontman for Devil Makes Three.
- Blake Shelton is not shy about his Twitter addiction.
- HoustonPress’ William Michael Smith on Corb Lund’s new album:
Lund and Losin’ Lately Gambler present us with a new and meaningful 21st century addition to the traditions of Western and cowboy music, something to succeed the likes of Ian Tyson and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and save their art from from total extinction.
- And another William Michael Smith article, this one on Guy Clark’s new album:
[...] a damn fine, memorable album that ought to signal to a bunch of these Texas Music pussies that they should sell their guitars and go back to accounting or stockbrokering or whatever they used to do before daddy paid for their first album.
- Listen to Dave Alvin on World Cafe.
- Dolly Parton has a couple of new projects in the works. The first is a four-CD, 99-song box set spanning her career, simply titled Dolly. The second, Dolly Live From London, is a two-disc live CD/DVD combo.
- John S. Pisano was the winner of the Guy Clark songwriting contest. The lyrics for his song, “Pieces Of Me And You,” are posted on Facebook.
- Fill out the fourth questionnaire from Country California.

Is Dave Haywood going solo? This and many other of country music's most pressing questions answered in the September edition of The 9513's world famous Mailbag!
Caroline Herring likes to sing songs about life in the South. No, not exactly like Justin Moore and Jason Aldean...
The 9513's resident historian Paul W. Dennis sits down for a chat with country music legend Gene Watson.
As much as we love girl singers, we love songs about girl singers even more. Here's just a few of the many tribute songs out there.
Step away from the river and up to a jukebox, because heartbreak is only temporary, but a good song about drowning yourself—like a diamond—lasts forever.
What do you think about music labels "testing the waters" with a single before providing access to an artist's entire album?
What country artist, young or old, would you recommend as a must-listen artist to a newcomer on his/her journey through country music, and what would your essential song picks be?

At long last, John Schneider returns to country music? Prayers do come true!
I follow Blake Shelton on twitter, and, sometimes it’s really funny, but other times he can be a bit obnoxious.
Nice pictures of The Hag. I read their article the other day, and honestly, it was a bit long. It could be because I’ve read both of his autobiographies, so a lot of the information was stuff I already knew, I dont know, I just got bored with it.

I hope this Gary Allan album comes out sooner rather than later. I thought it was originally coming out in late October, now it’s “by the end of the year.” Can’t wait to hear it!

Great buzz surrounding the new Corby disc. The first single “A Game In Town Like This” sounds like a Blue Rodeo track being sung by Corb (not necessarily a bad thing). Glad to see he’s getting rep in the States.
BTW, if you guys are into Corb – you’ll wanna check a guy named Tim Hus. He’s another Alberta boy, and sings in the same vein as Corby, but even less mainstream.

We just got the new Kent McAllister disc and some of his stuff reminds me of Corb, too.

I really liked John Schneider’s singles back during the 80’s and felt he had a fine voice. Awhile back at a country music festival in France John invited Amber Digby on stage to sing harmony vocals and Amber had a blast! Because of John being featured on the popular pop culture TV series “Smallville” he may just be let back in the door at country radio.
Thanks for the link to the Belleville Outfit video. I got to chat with Phoebe after a show back in October 08 and she is a sweet gal. They put on a fine live show, and especially if you like gypsy jazz influenced music like me.
I have to take exception to William Michael Smith thinking Corb Lund will save cowboy music from extinction. Cowboy music is thriving on a small scale in its own little niche at Cowboy Poetry and Music Festivals that are held all over the US (and in Canada) throughout the year. Dave Stamey, an acquaintence of mine, has been winning awards over the last few years for his songwriting and performing skills and is helping to keep cowboy music relevant. I’d guess Mr. Smith just has no awareness (like 99% of Americans) that an active cowboy music scene still exists.

Yeah, ditto to the Blake Shelton Twitter observation. He is funny a lot of the time, but some of the snarky arguments with other tweeters is kinda juvenile/obnoxious.

Did anybody else notice a complete lack of Buck Owen’s pics/references in the photo essay of Merle Haggard?

I just learned a lot about Merle Haggard! Thanks for the link.

Here’s a few links for those of you who like really honest, high quality Western/Cowboy/Americana music. Tim is from up around Edmonton, I believe – Allen is from around the Caroline country, and Shane is from Claresholm – so all Albertans!!
Have a listen – hope y’all enjoy. Allen is a real good guy that NOBODY knows about and we’re super pumped to spin his albums on our station up north of the 49th.

I got to see John Wednesday night for a quick 40 minute set at The Listening Room before he went to do his “real” show at 12th and Porter. It was great. A wonderful unexpected treat in an already full and fulfilling week in Nashville.
‘The Promise’ is a good song. John Schneider is a great singer. I’m glad to see he’s back. Country music needs him.
Alas, I must return to my real life tomorrow. But not before I take in a great show at the Bluebird in a few hours.
