They're different kinds of talent. As for the general comparison of Golden Age songwriters vs. contemporary songwriters, I maintain that the biggest difference between then and now is in the quality of the artists, the kind of songs artists are choosing to record and the nature of the arrangements, not the quality of the songwriters. Rich may not be among the best writers in the history of the genre, but I think he could've held his own in the Golden Age and his songs have had quite a run on country radio over the past couple of years.
