- Watch the exclusive video premiere of Ryan Bingham’s “Country Roads.”
- The 9513’s very own Jim Malec was dubbed best local country music blogger by the Nashville Scene!
At the country music website The9513.com, Malec writes so well you don’t know whether to be delighted just to read him or jealous that you don’t have that kind of talent. He’s rough on country music in the way that only a person who loves and thinks deeply about an art form can be.
That’s super awesome. Congrats Jim.
- Paste magazine’s Andy Whitman listed his favorite country music of the aughts along with what he considers its most disappointing artist.

- Austin Music Source’s Michael Corcoran on the recent Loudon Wainwright III release, High Wide and Handsome – the Charlie Poole Project:
This project works because Wainwright and Poole are kindred spirits, right down to the directness of their voices and their smart aleck attitudes. The guy who wrote “Dead Skunk” was originally attracted to Poole’s sense of humor, but as he got deeper into the body of work he could better feel the swing of a life lived in a hard world.

“I was knee-deep in post-production,” Fogerty says. “Out of the blue, she said, ‘It would be cool if you redid the Blue Ridge idea.’ I was happily surprised. It’s like a wife telling her husband, ‘Why don’t you go fishing?’
“Julie’s very wise. I tend to go off on my rather introspective musical agenda. She has real ideas. When you’re living with a genius, be quiet and go along for the ride.”
Julie proposed several Ranger cuts, startling Fogerty with suggested duet partners. He was intrigued by her advice to cover Rick Nelson’s Garden Party but hesitated when she added, “I’d like you to record it with the Eagles.”
- Whitney Duncan’s list of all-time favorite country albums is comprised mostly of hits packages — not necessarily a bad thing when you choose hits by artists like Don Williams and Tanya Tucker. What are a couple of your all-time favorites?

I know the perfect gal for Brad Paisley to cast in his TV show! Remember Mika from the short lived “Nashville” reality series on Fox awhile back? (A show that also included Jamey Johnson and some strange friends of his.) Well Mika is a contestant on the current “Amazing Race” on CBS on Sunday nights and her team is likely the next one to be eliminated, so she’ll be free for the part! (lol)
Oh great, so now Jim Malec’s head will be even more swelled up than before. Looks like we’ll need Jon to keep him in check now more than ever! Yikes! (lol)
Whoa, there’s way too many Texas music artists featured today! Oh no, The 9513 is morphing into “Gobblers Knob”! HELP!!!

Congrats Jim!

If Mikka were not afraid of everything from water to air and slightly less intelligent than ducks, her team might be doing better.

Dont worry Rick – Gobblers Knob doesnt have any intention on covering Dolly or Duncan anytime soon…of course, I doubt The 9513 will be covering Mastadon or Deer Tick anytime soon either :-)

Congrats Jim – well deserved. Even when I don’t agree with some of your writing (the clearly biased defense of Garth) it’s always so incredibly well worded that it’s a treat to read, purely from a literary standpoint.
Anybody creeped out by the thought of Kenny Rogers singing “The Gambler” over and over and over?? Seriously, has KR not made enough money that he’d reduce himself to something like that??

If someone paid me $4 million dollars, I would sing the entire Monkees catalog along with the Archies.
October 21, 2009 at 12:46 pm Permalink
Well yeah, but in fairness, that’s not a real deep catalog ;)

Yes, but its an embarrassing one. all right, I’ll say I do Brittany Spears, including dressing like her for $4 million. But I draw the line at sleeping with Kevin Federline.

In kenny rogers defense, he obviously knew when to hold ‘em

Evidently no one bothered to follow the Kenny Rogers link and actually read the story.

who needs stories when you got quick blurbs?
Speaking of, I don’t know which is creepier, some guy paying K-rog 4mil to sing the gambler all night, or the news that John Rich is procreating.

I don’t know what’s sadder, someone paying Kenny Rogers $4 million to sing “The Gambler” repeatedly, or that it took Rogers 12 renditions to decide enough was enough.
October 21, 2009 at 3:38 pm Permalink
hahah, I watched ALL 2 episodes of Nashville and actually enjoyed them. (I was the only one apparently) and I do remember Jamey Johnson and his VERY VERY awkward friends. If I remember right, they were all real sketchy and basically WORSHIPED the ground he walked on.
October 21, 2009 at 4:03 pm Permalink
Jon’s right. Apparently, if you pay Kenny Rogers 4 million dollars to sing The Gambler over and over he will pull a big diva hissy and only do it 12 times.
October 21, 2009 at 4:20 pm Permalink
I agree with Jon. Anyone who thinks a mere 12 times constitutes “over and over” is clearly a complete imbecile.
October 21, 2009 at 4:45 pm Permalink
The Paisley story came out a while back. Nashville on Fox was a joke. They did act like Jamey was an idol – Rachel Bradshaw was picked on a bit around Belmont afterwards… immature for students to do that, but the desire of fame comes with a price. I don’t see myself watching any show on the CW, regardless of who’s linked to it.

Re: CW Series
CW tried something of this nature this past fall with a short-lived sitcom called “The Beautiful Life.” The show was about a girl who was the next big thing in the New York modeling world who met someone whose future wasn’t as guaranteed. The show was produced by Ashton Kutcher, and starred Elle Mcfearson and Misha Barton. Despite the big names, it still fell flat. Now, with this whole country-thing they have planned, It’s the same principle, just transplanted in a different context.

Thanks everyone! I’m really humbled by the honor. And Betsy, those are some awful nice things you said about me. Thank you!
And to those who have emailed me privately–no worries, there will be no disruption in my work here at The 9513 due to my time in Europe. I have spent a good portion of the last two summers overseas working on some freelance projects, and while this may very well be my last go-round over there before I settle into Nashville full time, the truth is it doesn’t take away too much from what I do here.

Jim – please do a live-blog from a hash bar while you are overseas.

OH dang…so it’s Mika who Caanan picked up at the last minute that is causing him all sorts of trouble and slowed him from the start. Now she is about to get the great Country Songwriter kicked off of The Amazing Race because she is afraid of heights and is refusing to even go down a water slide. Poor Caanan.

wow a little baby Rich? don’t know what to think about that…Nashville can barely control John and his brother Issac and now there’s another one on the way. yeesh!! Lots of Luck, to the “happy” couple.
