John Michael Montgomery Will Cover Outlaw Hits For New Album
- Now that John Michael Montgomery has the freedom that comes with owning his own record label, he plans to cut an album of his favorite Outlaw hits from the ’70s and early ’80s. He’s working with Time Life on the project, which he plans to record late summer/early fall.
- Dateline NBC is devoting an entire hour to Taylor Swift on May 31.
- In his latest Nashville Skyline column, Chet Flippo draws parallels between the fledgling music and newspaper industries: “Both depend on the public to pay their way, and both have been unashamedly subservient with the establishments they should not be serving.”
- The Flatlanders‘ interview and performances at Austin’s KUT Studios is the most recent featured Favorite Session, a series where public radio hosts from around the country present their favorite studio sessions, on NPR.
- Austin Powell wrote two pieces in memoriam of Stephen Bruton and Poodie Locke.
- Jim Malec has two reviews in the latest issue of American Songwriter. He gave Ryan Bingham’s new disc Roadhouse Sun four stars and The Flatlanders‘ Hills and Valleys two and a half, calling the latter, “more inconsequential than iconic.”
- Former Austin writer and musician Joel Weickgenant reviewed performances of Carolyn Wonderland and Dale Watson in Amsterdam, where he says the two musicians have a small but involved, and appreciative, fan base.
- Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Julianne Hough each made appearances on Maxim’s Hot 100 list while Trace Adkins, Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan topped People’s list of country studs.
- With a host of family health issues, Slaid Cleaves admits that death has been on his mind the past few years. He told Austin360’s Brad Buchholz that he deals with mortality by taking a jog through the cemetery bordering his house. It’s that same cemetery where he documented epitaphs and borrowed words for the songs on his latest album, Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away… .
- The Austin Chronicle’s Jim Caligiuri gave Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away… four stars.
- In an interview with All Things Considered’s Melissa Block, Steve Earle recalled telling Townes Van Zandt about the birth of his oldest son:
“Yeah, I remember when Justin was born, I called Townes, and I said, ‘Well, it’s a boy, and his name’s Justin Townes,’ ” Earle says. “He goes, ‘Is that after anybody in my family?’”
- That’s a lot of songs about rain.
- Although Josh Grider doesn’t yet have a name for his new album, which he recently recorded, he says it’s much bigger (sonically) than what he expected it to be and compares it to ogres and onions. And not because it stinks or makes you cry. Look for a late summer/early fall release.
- It’s country day at Farce the Music and featured among the newest batch of honest album covers are Reba McEntire, Jack Ingram and Drew Kennedy (and it would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention he’s currently on The 9513-sponsored New American Voices Tour with Rodney Hayden).

My thoughts exactly, Paula.

JMM making an outlaw country album? For me that’s a bit like Jamey Johnson making an album of 98 Degrees, NSync, and Backstreet Boys songs.

The JMM outlaw album sounds kind of odd, but his voice has changed a bit as demonstrated on his last album and I thought different kind of material would work better for him, so it could turn out kinda cool. At least he’s taking a chance rather than rehashing the same formula.

The question that immediately entered my mind was not “what?” but “why?” I’m guessing that at some point in the near future it will be announced that NBC will be airing some Taylor Swift specials.

Er, is it really that rare for incredibly popular artists who sell millions of records to be on TV?

But when was the last time Dateline gave Carrie Underwood an hour of airtime…oh wait, I better not compare those two…

It’s rare for an entire hour of what is supposed to be a news program to be devoted to an entertainer (and I use the term loosely in Taylor’s case).

Have you actually seen that show? It’s “news” in the very loosest sense of the term.

I haven’t seen it in a very long time. I avoid watching NBC whenever possible, particuarly for news.

As for Jim Malec’s review where he said “The Flatlanders “Hills and Valleys” earns two and a half stars, calling the latter, “more inconsequential than iconic”.” I’d recommend that Jim stay away from Texas a Don Imus for a spell till the hard feelings simmer down….
Trailer’s retouched album titles include some gems as usual. I’m not so sure about the Rhonda Vincent album title though…
Taylor Swift is a pop culture media icon right now and I’m actually surprised there haven’t been other prime time TV specials on her recently. Speaking of teeny-bopper pop culture, the second installment of the Jonas Brothers TV show on the Disney Channel took a huge ratings drop compared to the first week. Turns out Nickelodeon placed a special “iCarly” episode in the same time slot and stole a good chunk of the tween girl audience away! (lol)

Weekend Opry Alert! Ashton Shepherd, who sadly hasn’t had a new single on radio for many months now, will be on tonight’s Opry. The Saturday Night Opry will feature Charlie Daniels, Jewel, and David Nail along with the regulars. After the Saturday Opry Jesse McReynolds and his Virginia Boys (and Girl) will be the hosts of the Ernest Tubb Record Shop Midnite Jamboree. I’m looking forward to that show and especially if they cover a lot of old country classics like they do on the Opry.

C’mon Rick, don’t you think Rhonda is quite fetching?
May 15, 2009 at 6:51 pm Permalink
If you like Rock, Caroyln Wonderland is really great.

Trailer, its just Rhonda is a gal in her 40’s with children in their 20’s. Referring to her as a “Nice Piece of Bluegrass” just strikes me as slightly inappropriate somehow…(lol) But then again they did really get her gussied up for the last couple of album covers, so I guess sexy sells in Bluegrass too!

Hmmmmm… who is less credible than John Michael Montgomery (singer of 90s hit songs as I Love the Way You Love Me, I Swear and I Can Love You Like That) to cover the hits of the Outlaw movement? Um… um… oh, wait! I’ve got one. Bryan White.

I get ya, Rick. I did not know that about her. I was just going on my gut reaction to her covers, no disrespect intended. Bet she might be at least a little flattered. ;)
May 16, 2009 at 10:02 am Permalink
There’s no “they” when it comes to Rhonda’s album covers or any other aspect of her image – or, for that matter, any other aspect of her business; she controls it all pretty tightly.

Could it be Dateline is actually focusing on Taylor Swift for one of their “To Catch a Predator” episodes”? After all, she violates the ears of millions of Americans each day on the radio.
May 20, 2009 at 5:46 pm Permalink
Hold on, now … let’s give John Michael a chance here. Cutting “outlaw” songs sounds like it might end up being a pretty cool project.
