Joey+Rory Sign To Vaguard/Sugarhill Records; Album Due This Fall
- Vanguard/Sugar Hill Records announced the addition of Joey+Rory (from CMT’s Can You Duet) to their roster. Their first single will be “Cheater, Cheater,” which they performed on the show, and their debut album is expected to release this fall.
- Time Life will begin releasing the 143 previously unreleased “Mother’s Best” Hank Williams recordings this fall. Included are numerous songs that Williams was never known to have performed and others that he never recorded commercially, like “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain.”
- Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert performed the first of their experimental full-length concerts together on Monday in Monroe, Michigan and Craig Shelburne was there to witness it. The night unfolded with both artists playing two mini-sets each with an acoustic song swap in the middle and a big finale.
- Despite having no prior teaching experience, cosmic cowboy Jimmie Dale Gilmore has a summer gig teaching songwriting workshops at a holistic retreat tucked in the hills of Rhinebeck, NY. However, he says he actually learns more than anyone from the class. “I think (songwriting’s) the kind of thing that I have an intuitive understanding of, but not an articulate understanding,” Gilmore says. “The class has forced me to do that, to put it into specific words.”
- A recently graduated Taylor Swift side-stepped rumors that she was dating Joe Jonas with the vague “we’re all friends” excuse.
- Nashville Gab has a sneak peek of Trisha Yearwood’s new ad for “Got Milk?” reminding you to drink a healthy dose of milk. The ad debuts in Family Circle on August 5th. Here’s a couple more behind the scenes pictures from the photo shoot featuring a healthy dose of her, uh, mammary glands.
- Alison Bonaguro wants to know when a sellout isn’t a sellout and says she’s okay with Julianne Hough’s decision to record a jingle for Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum (obligatory One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest reference: Mmmmm–Juicy Fruit). On the flip side of the coin, Peter Kohan, who endorses the collaboration of music and marketers, wonders whether the move to use Julianne Hough and two other artists is the right tactic for Wrigley.
- Roughstock’s Matt Bjorke sat down with Jamey Johnson to talk about his first record deal, his new album and his ex-wife.

- Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch blog pits videos for Sugarland’s “All I Want to Do” against Jessica Simpson’s “Come On Over” in a battle of the sexies. They call it a prime example of “Good Sexy” vs. “Bad Sexy.”
- An email from Todd Snider’s PR company informs us that his new EP, Peace Queer, is due out in stores October 14th and any other release date you have heard is effectively inoperative. And, in celebration of his birthday (Oct. 11) the EP will be available as a free download from the 11th to the 31st.
- Nashville at Nite released their fourth episode a couple of days ago which features interviews with Darryl Worley, Sarah Buxton and Marc Beeson. They were performing for the charity event “A Night of Hope: Benefiting the China Earthquake Orphans.”

Interesting, Paula. Carl Jackson will probably be a good fit for them, though at times I’ve felt like some of the albums he produces on different artists come out sounding a bit too similar. Almost like artists are being fit into the Carl Jackson mold rather than being produced individually.

I dont know a lot about Carl and his work, other than the fact that I’ve seen him with Jerry Salley and Larry Cordle at the Bluebird and other places around town a few times. I like them all (and I dont even like Bluegrass, which they do quite a lot of). I know Carl is very well respected (as are the other two). I think he might be good for the sound that Joey and Rory have though, that “real” country sound. I certainly hope so. I want them to do well. I’ll definitely buy it.

Carl Jackson did a great job with “Livin, Lovin, Losin” and any album that sounds like that is okay by me. Does the label connection mean they will be targeted purely at Americana radio? Hmmmm… It will be interesting to see how far contestants from “Can You Duet” get in the marketplace. I’m curious to see what Big Machine can do with the Coppola Twins, and especially music video wise…..
Jessica Simpson has always marketed herself as a sex kitten and forever will be thought of as Daisy Duke by those who saw the Dukes of Hazzard movie. Jennifer Nettles on the other hand has that “(dream) girl next door” wholesome look I personally find more interesting.
After looking at those Trisha Yearwood pictures, I kind of wish “Nashville at Nite” would have done a segment on backstage activities at that photo shoot… Its great to see Sarah Buxton anytime doing anything! The fact “Nashville at Nite” started off featuring Ashley Monroe and has now included Sarah proves they have excellent taste! (lol) Future episodes should focus on Sunny Sweeney (those rare times she’s in town for the Opry), Sarah Johns, The Wrights, and Elizabeth Cook when she gets back from Europe! Well, that’s my wish list anyway…

WOW, Chris thanks for that link! I can’t believe they didn’t go with the blue dress for the final ad spot. Trisha would be a great spokesmodel for “Hooters”! (lol) She could improve their image immensely…..
Even though I subscribe to Country Weekly I rarely visit the website. (I guess I’m too distracted being a cheeky bastard elsewhere much of the time…)(lol) I do enjoy the “pick the best cover” emails as I usually select the “I Don’t Like Either Cover / The Artist” answer! I was so happy when they started including those as one of the options….

I’ve liked what I’ve heard from the Coppolas, though I didn’t watch the show. Joey+Rory sound like they have potential. I’m not sure if Cheater Cheater is hooky or just annoying after awhile.

I was at the Miranda/Blake show. It was beyond a doubt the best concert I have ever seen. They beat last year’s Monroe County Fair performer, Trace Adkins, by a wide margin. I even liked this better than Kenny Chesney’s Road and the Radio tour, which was six hours of music with seven performers (Kenny, Dierks Bentley, Gretchen Wilson, Carrie Underwood, Blaine Larsen, and Jake Owen).
Miranda is my 11 year old sister’s favorite singer by far, and after Miranda called everyone up to the front before “Gun Powder and Lead,” the two of us spent the rest of the evening so close we were touching the stage. Miranda was a fantastic, energetic performer and she acted like a force of nature. Blake Shelton was great too, really playing it up like he was having a ball. And their chemistry together, especially as they dueted on Loretta Lynn’s “Feelins” was wonderful.
I never noticed that flasher though.

Speaking of Miranda, here is a link to a website that has her doing acoustic unplugged versions of some of her hits that was featured on the “Origins” episode on Miranda on GAC. I don’t care for the standard edgy, roots rock versions of these songs but I find the acoustic versions to my liking:

Blake and Andy Griggs were on stage trading songs and drinking beer in a park in Fresno, CA on 7/31/2007 and Miranda came on stage to join Blake for a song or two and do one by herself (she was not a scheduled performer). Miranda got by far the most enthusiastic crowd response that night. Blake commented that Miranda didn’t like it when he and Andy got together like that and Miranda grabbed a mic and said “Yeah, ’cause they get drunk!” in a full Texas twang voice. Great stuff…..
