Joey + Rory - “Cheater, Cheater”

Matt C | August 15th, 2008 Email Share

Joey and Rory Cheater CheaterSongwriters: Rory Feek, Joey Martin, Kristy Osmunson, and Wynn Varble

Having not watched one minute of CMT’s Can You Duet, I assumed that a new duo named “Joey + Rory” — really, “Joey + Rory” — would be some MySpace-loving aspiring Disney stars from the likes of Nashville Star’s Laura & Sophie or Pearl Heart. Color me pleasantly surprised that Joey + Rory turned out to be two fully-grown adults singing a mature (well, ok, mature-themed), delightfully acoustic country barn-burner.

When it comes to acoustic music on country radio, there’s Sugarland coffee house-strumming acoustic and there’s Dixie Chicks Home bluegrass-infused, Music Row-be-damned acoustic. Joey + Rory’s debut is much closer to the latter than the former, and it’s arresting to hear what nearly qualifies as a bluegrass song performed by a straight-laced contemporary country singer. Country radio hasn’t had a single with a strong dobro part since Billy Currington’s “Good Directions” (2006) and I can’t even remember the last single with a string-burning bluegrass acoustic guitar part (Alan Jackson’s “I Don’t Even Know Your Name” hit way back in 1995). Give Joey + Rory credit for ditching the Telecaster-heavy arrangement they used on Can You Duet for a delectable, honest-to-goodness country song.

While the instrumentation is refreshing enough, it’s great to hear a cheating song on country radio, even if “Cheater, Cheater” isn’t exactly of the tear-your-heart-out variety. It’s actually downright frivolous, but that just makes it all the more fun. And really, are you allowed to say “ho” on country radio?

Still, it’s not all good for the new duo. Joey Martin doesn’t yet sound like a professional vocalist; “Cheater, Cheater” is oddly phrased and somewhat colorless, which I attribute to Martin’s continued quest to discover the personality within her vocal ability. Rory Feek provides barely audible harmony vocals, suggesting that Joey + Rory is newest member of the Brooks & Dunn and Sugarland lineage of unequal partnerships. And that name: even in a MySpace world, I have to think that “Joey + Rory” is too juvenile for the country radio audience.

But the one thing that should be right for the country radio audience is “Cheater, Cheater.” Play it.

Thumbs Up

I just saw the new music video:

    http://blog.cmt.com/2008-08-15/joey-rory-start-things-off-with-cheater-cheater/#comments

and I have to say, I really like them! I didn’t watch any of “can you duet”, but I really like them and the song.

Now about the duo thing, they could be like Lady Antebellum, their first single was all Kelley, while their second was more duet style.

I love this song. I loved it (and Joey+Rory) on “Can You Duet”; and I’ve been playing the heck out of it on their myspace in the past week since they uploaded it.

I do think it will take Joey a little bit to find, and define, “her” voice — and Rory can provide great vocals if he just would (I’ve heard him in writers rounds many times and have loved him since the first time I heard him).

Funny you should compare him to Kix though, as he did that himself on CYD. He said he was just the “eye candy”, that he was her Kix. I think they could be killer in live shows just because of their great personal relationship and Rory’s charm and sense of humor and thier easy back and forth banter. Oh, and they can sing too! ;-)

And really, are you allowed to say “ho” on country radio?

Tim did it (though he didnt specifically call anyone that.)

Chris - thanks for the link. I hadnt seen the video yet. I love it. At first I thought “hmmm, I’d like to have seen more ‘acting’ (more of Joey giving Rory the what-for)” but then I decided this was done perfectly because it keeps it light and fun and not just another “somebody done me wrong song” (a song that I love by the way).

Anyway — I give this two thumbs up. (I’d give if more if I had’em).

wow, something good actually came from a CMT show. I’m stunned.

I loved this song though, simple, straightforward, interesting, catchy.

One thing though Matt, what makes you say it’s frivolous? You didn’t think that the details in her accusations (”did you hide your ring in the pocket of your jeans, or did you just leave it on?”) were enough to make the song serious?

I will admit to watching the show, and in fact, it had much better talent than most of the various musical-reality shows out there currently. I enjoyed this song from them during their time on the show, cuz it gave them an edge and attitude that they had previously lacked. As sweet as she comes off, it was almost startling to hear her bust out with “ho” in the song…

It also gives me a reason to refer to one of my favorite movie quotes: “yeah, she was a ho…fo’ sho’…”

Ben, it’s the performance, not the lyrics, that make the song frivolous. You’re right: lyrically, this song could’ve easily gone the way of “You Ain’t Woman Enough.” But it’s not performed that way, and the video posted above (especially the ending) certainly confirms that interpretation.

I think this is different enough to snag some attention, and I think that is a good thing.

I think once they did this song on the show they showed everyone that they were multi-faceted. They’d done the traditional (and done it well) but they showed another side with this one. And the fact that it was a song they (at least Rory) wrote, I think made them even more comfortable with it.

I loved the show too, and thought it had surprisingly good talent (ahem, Nashville Star producers, please take note!)

I like this song too. I agree about thefrivelous nature of it though. It’s refreshingly good and fun, at any rate.

Rory Feek co-wrote, one of my favorite Blake Shelton songs too, “Some Beach.” He clearly has a sense of humor. Unfortunately, he also wrote “You Can Let Go”, which lacked imagination, both in melody and lyrics.

Rory wasn’t extremely prominent, but I can tell that he has a good voice. I really like Joey’s voice as well, actually.

I’m glad their with Sugar Hill, so maybe they won’t feel such pressure to move away from this particular sound.

sorry matt but with your remarks on joey’s vocal abilities you’re not even in the parking lot of the ball park. on second thought, your not even in town. let’s get real, while the instrumentation might be refreshing and the lyrics nicely frivolous, the highlight of this effort is her voice. this women can sing and sounds very much like a pro, even a good pro, in my ears.

Does Sugar Hill EVER try to target Top 40 Airhead Country Radio with its artists? I’d expect them to stay on familiar turf and put this single out to the Americana format stations that respect the quality of their mostly non-commercial artist roster. “Joey & Rory” (as it should be presented) have a lot of talent and its nice to see a Nashville singer/songwriter from behind the scenes get a break along with his wife to become a recognized performing artist.

Personally my favorite current husband and wife singer/songwriter duos are The Wrights and The Woodys, but Joey/Rory are darn good as well. Gee, I can’t understand why they didn’t just go with “The Feeks”? (lol)

Joey + Rory are so talented, and really deserve this. Rory is an amazing and successful songwriter in his own right, and Joey has a voice like none other. Matt C., you should check out both Joey & Rory’s invidividual independent CD’s on Speakerheart.com. Rory has a fantastic voice, and there are songs on Joey’s (imho, most notably the title song Strong Enough to Cry) which could be/should be big hits on country radio right now. Go take a listen, and hopefully you’ll change your mind about Joey not sounding like a professional vocalist.
I’m hoping we get to see and hear a lot more from these two.

I like these two but truthfully why did Rory go on Can You Duet? He had already gain fame from being the main guy who discovered Blaine Larsen and had major exposure with that. He also was one of the founders of Giant Slayer who first signed Blaine. This industry just amazes me sometimes and to have Rory getting critiqued by some of his fellow writers like Mayo is ridiculous. I bet they were best friends to be honest!!! Just goes to show you that this show was kind of stagged for him to be on it…he shouldn’t have been able to be on it at all…maybe his wife but not him!!!! I wonder if he was really voted off or him and her was let go due to everyone else being true and him and her already being in the industry. If I do recall, on the show they just portrayed him as a hillbilly from TN instead of a major guy within the industry. I do though like them and this song though!

  47. Paula

Marc, I was a little surprised that everyone (judges) pretended not to even know him. But Jared Johnson was on there too and nobody acknowledged that he was an “insider” as well (not as sucessful as Rory, but maybe as well-known around town because he was / is trying to make it as an artist as well as a writer.)

I think that Rory honestly did it for Joey. I’ve heard Rory on numerous occasions and he has a fine voice and should’ve been a little more equal in the vocals than he was on the show.

Of course, this is all just me thinking out loud here. I have no basis for this opinion other than … well, it’s my opinion.

Too bad the song’s co-writter, Kristy O, was never mentioned on the show as being a HUGE part in writing this song. The group she is in, Bomshel, actually recorded “Cheater Cheater” first and Bomshel was scheduled to release this song as the kick-off to their new album. They have been promoting this as their single for MONTHS AND MONTHS! I have zero respect for J&R and it’s sad that they could do this to another VERY deserving artist!

Rory did all he could do to help get Joey more notice. That’s why they did the show. He told me that he didn’t want to mess singing more on the single because of his wife’s talent. Sounds like a man who will gladly play “Kix” to his wife’s “Ronnie” if it gets her more acclaim which it seemingly has.

The fact that anyone on the show was an ‘insider’ is kind of pointless as it was about forming duos and since it IS a country show, many Nashville ‘insiders’ played on the show. FYI, to follow up Paula’s statement about Jared Johnson: He’s with Craig Wiseman’s “Big Loud Shirt” writing group.

From what I hear Cheater Cheater was written by Kristy O. (from Bomshel) after getting her heart broken, and Rory was there as a co-writer. Joey then, after it’s completion jumped on the boat as a so called “co-writer” (and this after initially not even wanting to sing this song because of certain lyrics). Not sure were Wynn comes into the picture.

On the episode of the show where they sang it, I’m pretty sure Joey said that Rory played what he had of it for her and she told him to hurry up and finish it because she wanted to sing that one on the show. (I’m not quoting of course because I cant remember word for word, but I’m sure if someone wanted to replay that episode over on cmt.com or off their tivo they could confirm that).

Curb recording artists BOMSHEL have been set to release “Cheater Cheater” as a single on October 15th for nearly 4 months now!! Very interesting indeed that this newly signed ‘duet’ couple would be releasing the same song around the same time. Now legally, I dont know much that goes on in the industry, but I DO know that BOMSHEL has been performing this song live since early January and also at radio station interviews all over the country, also annouced in April/May that this would be their newest single. They were in the studio recording this clear back in March I believe. BOMSHEL has been building up a very strong fanbase, and following for this song, by touring all year long! It’s clearly a fan favorite on the set list. I have been in quite a bit of shocked that now Joey and Rory have decided to release “Cheater Cheater” as THEIR first single (this being announced at the end of July, several months after BOMSHEL’s public announcement).

Personally, I think this song sounds a lot more believable and incredibly more powerful, if you will, with BOMSHEL singing it. BOMSHEL’s lead singer, Kelley, has one of the most amazing voices I’ve ever heard, and brings the attitude and passion that this song was originally intended for.

Bomshel’s member co-wrote the song with Rory and if they had recorded it first, they would’ve had ‘rights’ to it, especially if it was intended to be a single. More than likely, Curb said they WOULDN’T release the song for Bomshel so Joey and Rory took it.

I can’t listen now, because I’m at work and my favorite speakers are at home, but I can’t wait to compare the two. I’m suspecting Matt is right that there probably isn’t foul play here. The record label probably just decided not to release it so J+R probably did it instead. I’m no insider though, so I have no idea. Bomshel recorded this song WAY back in like March I believe it was. This whole situation makes me sick to my stomach in anger. Why did Joey and Rory take ALL the credit for this song when Rory, Kristy and another person wrote it. There was NO mention of Kristy (from Bomshel) or this other cowriter on the song on Can You Duet. Bomshel is getting screwed over here. For J&R to take a song, that they didn’t even want in the first place, to sing it on a nationalized tv show then decide to use that song as a single like a month ago it’s hottible. I liked them on the show, now I’ve lost my respect for them. They could have picked another song to sing, and NOT one that has been performed onstage and on radio stations across the USA by Bomshel.

Kelley (lead singer of Bomshel) sounds better as a singer for this song. She isn’t so blah with the lyrics. Kelley makes me feel like she’s been cheated on, and is singing this song to whomever it was that cheated on her. As compared to Joey who just sings it like a normal song. Now the video from Joey and Rory for this song, joke.

  63. PaulaW
    September 2, 2008 at 10:11 am Permalink

I dont know the history of the song and it’s recordings. MY opinion is that Joey sings it better than Bomshel. And it’s not uncommon for writers who sing their own songs to not tell you who their co-writers were on every song before they sing it. (Just ask TK and KC, I’m sure they never do it).

Here’s the deal. If Bomshel recorded the song in March, it was then “fair game” for anyone to record after that. If they’ve been sitting on it for five months and havent released it then, oh well. It’s not the first time it’s happened and it dang sure wont be the last. Welcome to the music business.

    Paula,

That’s exactly right. The fact is that Joey and Rory (who, according to credits) co-wrote the song and have released it as a single. It truly is as simple as that. Bomshel (or is that BOMSHEL?) really don’t really have any chance of any of their songs becoming hits. They only even still have a record deal because they’re with CURB. Any other label would’ve tossed them to the side of the, well, street by now.

  65. leeann

I’m thinking this isn’t quite as scandalous as BOMSHEL (thanks CHRIS) are making it out to be. Seriously, it’s the music business. Songwriters aren’t required to verbally mention every co-writer’s name. I’ve heard many interviews where the co-writers names aren’t mentioned. Sure, it’s nice if they are, but not a scandal if they’re not.

It looks like there’s a small team trying to get this “info” out there, since it’s been discussed at CU as well. Same talking pointes over there. by

I have observed and heard about this going on for quite sometime, and just think that it is healthy to get the word out there about what has been going on. As far as I know, CURB and BOMSHEL were/are still planning on releasing this as their single October 15th, as originally announced. I apologize if I came off rudely, it’s just quite upsetting to see two of the most talented, sincere, caring girls in the music business have something like this happen to them after they have worked so hard to get where they are. So please don’t take my opinion or others here posting for that matter, and use it against these girls. :)

As I said at CU, I can understand why dedicated fans would be disappointed by something like this if it’s something that they’ve been counting on for awhile for this duo. Hopefully, they’ll be able to find a nother single to release and they’ll release it quickly so that something like this doesn’t happen to them again. Why has it taken so long for BOMSHEL to officially release it if it’s been being promoted since March?

    Repost from CU boards:

BOMSHEL’s former lead singer Buffy, decided to persue her career as a solo artist..and into the picture comes Kelley! CURB offically signed Kelley June 30th of this year. So I’m guessing but maybe there were a few things contract wise, and what not, and this is one of the reason’s they picked a later release date….?

Because at large labels the left hand often doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. Keep in mind that this is very doubtfully the artist’s fault

    Leeann,

Probably the same reason it took them so long to go from testing out “Bomshel Stomp” (or “BOMSHEL Stomp”?) to releasing it nationwide, with a spectuacular #46 placement to show for it.

BR - How does that work, swapping one singer for another? (Ok, I get that part of it but what I mean is..) if the record is already done, and they have a new singer, do they release the singles off the album with Buffy singing on the album to radio, while Kelley is the one actually touring now and singing live? Or do they have to re-record the singles to release to radio? (Not picking a fight here, I just dont really know how all that would work). Perhaps all that has something to do with the delay in releasing the single?

Hi Paulaw! Well the previous BOMSHEL duo which included former lead Buffy Lawson, and Kristy O. had an album that was never released, and I think one of the reasons for that, altho this is just my opinion, is because of Buffy’s decision. Now as far as BOMSHEL now with Kelley at lead (which btw is one of the best career moves ever for this group because she is incredibly talented for a 20yr old), they immediately have started writing new music and recording it for thier new album. As far as touring, they have only kept a few signature “old school” BOMSHEL songs (5 I think) to perform live, and added a whole set of brand new material. I’m not really sure how they will go about with the new record as far as the previous songs that had already been recorded, but I’m hoping they will infact recorded them, although the new material they have is incredible, and sooo well written I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a 12 track album of all new stuff. There are atleast 5 other songs, they have performed live that would make fantastic singles, (not to mention the fact that they have more stuff they are in the studio with right now) Personally, I think for them, management, the label, the fans “CC” seemed like the best way to go as the ‘debut’ single! Their new CD will most likely be out sometime early next year is my guess…

I’m gonna have to agree with those who like the J+R version. As promised, I gave the Bomshel version a try and it’s not as good. It lacks some of the life and character that this one has. Additionally, I feel that the singing is slower than the music. I don’t know that I would have been drawn to Bomshel’s version at all if I had heard it prior to this version.

While we’re on the subject of BOMSHEL, I just want to say that I’m one of the few people who loved the “BOMSHEL Stomp”. I know WBCT in Grand Rapids (and nearly every station in Michigan, for that matter) played the hell out of it back when “Ain’t My Day to Care” was the current single. I’m bummed that BOMSHEL are 0 for 6, or whatever their tally is now.

Wow..BR you are working really hard to get on every single site and run my parents’ name through the dirt. Clearly you know the girls and are friends with them, so I understand how you could say these things about Joey+Rory without any regard to who they are, and whether all these accusations are indeed facts. I have known Buffy since I was a little girl, and Kristy has always been a friend of the family…So, maybe you can understand how none of this makes any sense to me. It would make me very sad if I thought Kristy O from Ohio really thought all these things you have been saying were true. I’m not going to start throwing out the other side of this story, because I don’t feel that it is necessary, but I do ask you to stop getting on everything that has to do with them and throwing out negative comments. It’s frustrating, as someone that loves and believes in everything they do, to get on here to see how people are reacting to them, and all i can find is you posting things about another band and how their version is better, and how my parents stole their song…you can do that on the stuff that has to do with Bomshel. You will not find us getting on their reviews and things and telling people bad things about them. We wouldn’t do that anyway, because we all hope the best for them.

To put all those “stolen song” claims about it here’s what Rory said about the song in the song x song for the new album (incredible by the way):

From that first evening I brought the opening verse and chorus home and played it for Joey…it was over! She didn’t just like what it said, she flat out LOVED everything about it. When I’d started the song earlier that day in a writing appointment at the office with Kristy O (One of the members of Curb act Bomshel), I’d thought there might be something there…But Joey KNEW what this song was and what it could be in an instant. She’s the one that championed it and made sure it didn’t just become another song that never saw the light of day. Within a week or so of that first night, Joey and I were sitting down with Kristy and our good friend Wynn Varble again at the office finishing it.

I think they’re taking a different approach now, Chris. Every instance of Bomshel on their My Space is in lower case. What inspired your capitalization crusade anyways?

About a hundred comments ago, commenter “BR” referred to them repeatedly as BOMSHEL. I found that very amusing, for whatever reason.

Remember when Keith Urban spelled his name with all lower-case letters? Good times.

I am beginning to wonder if this will be a “pure country” crossover hit, because this song is catching on with a lot of non-traditional fans.My friends and I aren’t country fans, per se. One of my best friends hates modern country because she feels it is too pop. My hubby is strictly heavy metal and southern rock. I happened upon this song because my two younger sons are huge country fans and turned my friends onto it. I’ve heard the Bomshel version, but the Joey+Rory version has caught on like fire amongst all of my group. The Bomshel version has too much going on in it. The Joey+Rory version is catchy like a nursery rhyme and they’re having fun. We love it.

I like the song, I like the performance, and most of all- I like the performers. I hope they stay the way they are. They look like ordinary folks, with no articiality, singing for ordinary folks like me.

There is alot of new blood in country music which is making for a very exciting time for fans. A new generation in age and type of country music has emerged. Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood are bringing back the teens, including my own daughters. For my own taste I’m digging Joey and Rory, the third place contestants from CMT’s Can You Duet? Instead of turning on the local news in the mornings I am tuning into the videos on CMT in hopes of seeing their new video, Cheater, Cheater. I love their simplicity. It’s so refreshing after the gone Hollywood styles of some of the standard artists we see on the CMT countdown each week. Using orchestras and rap artists does not a country sound make. Get back to basics and you’ll rejuvenate country music and bring back a huge fan base from the Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn generation. I’m in my late 30’s and these are for me the standards of country music from whom everyone else is judged. Joey and Rory come from that generation as well and it definitely shows in their performance and their style. The next time a meeting is held to decide the list of songs on the countdown consider getting back to the country in country music, consider Joey and Rory.

wow, i haven’t checked this board in weeks. HFEEK, I didn’t know that Kristy was from Ohio. Her being a friend of the family, I think you would know where she is from. OK, enough with the BOMSHEL thing already, it doesn’t matter if it’s cap locked or not.
