Joe Nichols Covered By…Nickelback

  • Man, Jim and Matt did such an excellent job running The 9513 while Brady and I were gone I’m a little scared about coming back for fear I might mess something up. Thanks a bunch, Jim and Matt, for taking over the extra duties. Brady got hitched in Washington, and I’ll be damned if that isn’t some of the most beautiful country you’ve laid eyes on. Everyone kept commenting on how storybook-like the wedding was. As best man, Brady gave me a Seiko watch and a sweet Johnny Cash Case knife. For their first dance, he and his wife danced to Tim McGraw’s “It’s Your Love”, while the mother/son dance was accompanied by Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance”. I put aside my apprehensions and sang karaoke with my cousin and friend to “Folsom Prison Blues” and with Brady on “Pancho & Lefty”, which he dedicated to our dad. Good times all around.
  • While I’m mentioning “Pancho & Lefty”, John Duffy wrote an article briefly analyzing the song, gave some history about it, and drew a few parallels between the song and the singers who made it famous–Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.
  • Ashley Monroe drops some news in her latest blog entry. While her album is still unreleased, she had a cut on the Kelly Pickler album that was recently certified gold and also has a cut on the new Carrie Underwood CD (ca-ching!). According to her publisher’s myspace, the song is “Flat on the Floor,” which previously charted for Katrina Elam. She’s also been writing with Miranda Lambert and is dating guitarist Keith Gattis. Isn’t he a little old for her?
  • Nickelback opened the encore set of their recent Nashville show with the Joe Nichols hit “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.”

Lead vocalist Chad Kroeger told the crowd, “I haven’t been able to get this song out of my mind for a year and a-half. I love this song.” They followed it up with their own hit, “Rockstar.”

That’s some unexpected respect for one of radio’s more traditional artists.

  • A list of a few Central Texas recording studios, their rates, and a couple of albums that were recorded there.
  • I recently found a post via The Tennessean on Northbound that was written back in June titled The Most Depressing Country Songs of All Time. I can think of quite a few that he missed, but the songs are conveniently categorized into The Clear Channel Division, The Legends Division, George Jones Division, and Lone Star Division.
  • Dolly Parton is scheduled to be the first musical guest on next season’s Dancing With The Stars.
  • Joe Nichols’ recently released Real Things gets some major props from The Lost Highway in the form of 5/5 stars.

While many might have expected “Real Things” to be chock full of “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” styled tracks to get both radio play and record sales, the album is instead a refreshingly more reserved, Merle-esque affair.

  • Dwight Yoakam’s relationship with Buck Owens expanded beyond musical boundaries, he describes it as “part friend, part sibling, and a whole lot surrogate parent.” Natalie Nichols wrote an article for the Los Angeles Times detailing the relationship, Yoakam’s new album, and the video for the first single that will be directed by Fred Durst. It’s well worth the read.
