Jessica Harp Reconsiders Career Choice; WSM Enlists New DJs: Dierks Bentley, Pam Tillis, & Jim Lauderdale
- Jessica Harp announced on her website that she’s leaving her career as a recording artist to become a full-time songwriter.
- Chris Price and Joe Harland, producers for BBC and MTV, went on a cross-country search for the spirit of Gram Parsons for a project they call Missing Parsons. Along the way, they received a lesson in producing from John Carter Cash and advice on how to burn corpses (or not) from Phil Kaufman and have written about their travels in a an upcoming book titled Live Fast, Die Young: Misadventures in Rock & Roll America.
- Farce the Music honored Texas Independence Day with photoshopped album covers of Texas artists, including George Strait, Bruce Robison, Brandon Rhyder (a guest contribution…), and more.
- Luke Bryan wants your vote for the 2010 ACM Top New Solo Vocalist and he’s not afraid to wear a leotard to get it.
- The Texas Music Matters song of the day is Darrell Scott’s “Where the Spirit Meets the Bone” from his forthcoming double album, The Crooked Road (May 25).
- Radio station 650 AM WSM enlisted the services of Dierks Bentley, Pam Tillis, and Jim Lauderdale for a new series of midday shows that will run Monday through Wednesday starting March 15. The Thursday shows will include a rotating cast, starting off with Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor.
- The Grascals have a new album due out at the end of the month titled The Famous Lefty Flynn’s. Shortly after its release, the band will head out on Hank William Jr.’s Rowdy Friends Tour.
- Jim Malec on Easton Corbin’s self-titled debut album:
“On his self-titled debut album, Corbin guides his warm, smooth-as-gravy-southern drawl over a series of innocuous neo-traditional country songs that gives this notable emerging talent precious little with which to work. The 27 year-old Floridian breathes a bit of authenticity into the cliché at the heart of debut single “I’m A Little More Country Than That,” but elsewhere there’s nary a memorable hook or original turn of phrase to be found.”
And on Gary Allan’s upcoming Get Off On The Pain:
“Get Off On the Pain may not be the world’s most uplifting listening experience, but what it lacks in cheer it makes up in truth. For fans who appreciate outstanding country music that deals with real issues, that fact may just make the album’s title a perfectly appropriate statement.”

- In an interview with Barry Mazor, Rounder Records co-founder Ken Irwin recalled the beginnings of the label:
“Basically, this was my college roommate and my girlfriend of the time. We started out in the same three-alcove apartment, as a living and working collective, going to festivals to hear all the music together, traveling on that VW bus, seeing Muddy Waters and Bill Monroe and Doc Watson at Club 47 in Cambridge. We didn’t even own a tape recorder. We were fans and hobbyists, thinking of the labels we’d known, ‘Well, if they’re not going to do it, maybe we could make available music that we like and think others would.’

Nashville Concert Alert! Tomorrow night (Thursday 3/4) Elizabeth Cokk will be joining Rodney Crowell, Mary Gautier and Minton Sparks for a songwriters night at the Bluebird Cafe. Sounds like a good time to me! (Well as long as Rodney and Mary don’t get political anyway…)
It would have been nice if “Missing Parsons” had also been filmed as a documentary to accompany the book. That would have been really fun to watch. Oh well…
Trailer’s album cover re-do’s are top notch as usual. Its nice to see Trish Murphy’s fine “Girls Get In Free” album cover show up anywhere these days! (lol)
Speaking of guest DJ’s, on Sunday night Brendan Benson of The Raconteurs hosted a one hour show out here in L.A. and I was hoping he’d at least mention Ashley Monroe or play one of her songs. No such luck, in fact I found most of the semi-art rock crap he played to be unlistenable. Why oh why can’t Ashley Monroe collaborate with tradition oriented country artists rather than the Brendan Benson’s and Trent Dabbs’ of this world? Crikey!

Jessica Harp. I kinda feel for her but I admit..when she dyed her hair either back to black or to black…and had that pasty white make-up…it just kind of made me not listen to her music but constantly wonder why she did that to her look. I hope her songwriting works out.

Easton Corbin’s album seems to be generating a big, collective yawn from reviewers. I’m all for new artists with a neo-traditional style getting accepted by country radio. Its too bad in this case it took copying one of the extremely popular “legacy artists” still played on Top 40 country radio to do it. So Easton’s copying George Strait, Randy Houser does a mean Brooks & Dunn, so who’s gonna step up to fill Alan Jackson’s shoes? Hmm…

Rick’s Random Tidbits: Brady & Brody, how could you not link to The Boot’s article about the conservative “Taking Our Country Back” concert scheduled for Tulsa, Oklahoma? Seeing John Rich on the docket is not unexpected, but Gretchen Wilson is performing as well! Somehow I doubt the “Redneck Woman”’s family were registered Republicans! Go Gretchen!

Really saddened by Jessica Harp’s choice, because while she is a fantastic songwriter… her voice has a far-too pleasurable twang to it that shouldn’t go unheard… I love it…
The only thing good coming out of this is that her album comes out in a couple weeks, digitally, but its better than it being pushed back several times over the last year… can’t wait to get it =)
