Jennifer Nettles Celebrates Birthday With the Start of Love on the Inside Tour
- The first night of Sugarland’s Love On the Inside tour coincided with Jennifer Nettles’ 34th birthday, a present she cherished before working the crowd into a frenzy with duo partner Kristian Bush, and according to Craig Shelburne, earning their nomination for entertainer of the year from the CMA Awards.
- Honky tonker James Hand (MySpace) completed his second album for Rounder Records and should be releasing it in January.
- Patty Loveless, who just released an album of cover songs titled Sleepless Nights, makes an appearance on another album released today–The Imus Ranch Record. Don Imus sent Loveless one song that she turned down, but when he sent Stevie Nicks’ Fleetwood Mac song “Silver Springs” she felt like it might be a little bit of a challenge and decided to record it. Other artists making contributions to the project include: Delbert McClinton, Lucinda Williams, Levon Helm, Raul Malo, Little Richard, Randy Travis, Big & Rich, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Bekka Bramlett, John Hiatt and Vince Gill.
Nelson does the standard “What a Difference a Day Makes,” Big & Rich do the Beastie Boys’ “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)” and Williams does Nelson’s and Waylon Jennings’ “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.” Gill cut Porter Wagoner’s “Satisfied Mind” the day after Wagoner’s funeral.
- Album releases for September 16:
- The Tennessean’s Beverly Keel declares John Hiatt a living legend. On Thursday he’ll receive the lifetime achievement award for songwriting from the Americana Music Association and on Oct. 26 he’ll be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Even with those distinguished achievements, he feels the best is yet to come.
“I don’t know if it’s that Midwest thing, but I still hold out hope that my best stuff is ahead instead of behind. I feel like I’m about to write something better than I’ve written, or just not better in the sense of, ‘Whoo, that is great,’ but more to the point and simpler and more direct and with a better melody and some sort of melody/lyric combination that takes you somewhere special.”
- The Oak Ridge Boys have placed themselves up for auction on eBay to perform a show for the highest bidder on Dec. 31. The starting bid is $25,000 and ends on Sep. 21.
- Amazon is currently running a buy 2 get 1 free special for select albums, most of which are already discounted to under $8. I noticed a couple of selections apiece from Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle and others from C.W. McCall, Jerry Jeff Walker and the Statler Brothers. If you’re more inclined to download mp3’s, then check out the forums for a list of albums under $6.
- Michael Corcoran says there’s no substitute for seeing Redd Volkaert, who backed Merle Haggard for seven years, live, but his latest album, Reddhead, will serve you right for those nights that you can’t.
The point of his new “Reddhead,” which hits stores Tuesday, might be to show that Volkaert is more than just a guitar player. He writes or co-writes seven of the 14 tracks and his rich, deep voice is featured in the mix, but ultimately the CD comes off as an instrumental album with vocals. Whether he’s exploring western swing on Bob Wills’ “End of the Line” or blues with “Call the Pound” or his caustic relationship ditties (co-written by Laura Durham) such as “Is Anything Alright,” “We Need to Talk” and “Just Because I Don’t Care,” the lyrics seem to serve as spacers between all the spectacular picking. In every genre he tackles, Volkaert can hold his own with anyone.

It’s really folk music, but I would like to point out that the discovery download on itunes, “Young Friend” by Brooke Waggoner is an amazing song. I highly recommend it, and I hope her album comes out physically soon!
Also, am I the only one who doesn’t like Darius Rucker’s voice? I’ve read reviews of his album, and everyone likes his voice better than the material, but I just don’t like his voice…

Good matchup for Loveless on Silver Springs.. going to have to check that out. Glad to see another glowing review for Sugarland live. I’ll probably check out this years tour too. Had a blast last year.

I wonder how many American Idol fans will buy Kristy Lee Cook’s CD? It was an advertised special at Best Buy for $ 9.99 this week, which is better than the treatment Crystal Shawanda got (only a promotional email form Sony-BMG announcing its release). Kristy is a beautiful gal, but there are so many other pretty blondes doing well in mainstream country these days that she’s just another pretty face in the crowd…..
I think Darius Rucker’s voice is okay for pop-country but it wouldn’t ever motivate me to purchase anything from him. I thought his cowboy vocals on the Burger King commercial were weak…
I hope that Don Imus’ face isn’t on the cover of that CD or it would scare everyone away! I doubt it will sell very well on the campuses of all black colleges…..
