Forgotten Artists: Cal Smith - When the Florida Sunshine Opry (Eustis, FL) booked its first “name” (non-local) act back in 1999, the act they chose was Cal Smith. In an attempt to discover and highlight the best music every month, We'll be publishing a list of the best songs released throughout that period. Here's Brady Vercher's picks for October.
For the second episode of The 9513 Country Music Podcast, your host Kelly Dearmore caught up with two seemingly different artists in Sarah Borges and Trent Willmon. Take a listen.
Free Music Downloads: If you’ve only recently come to country music, or have never delved past the genre’s surface and it’s most famous names, you may not have heard of Tom Russell. That’s a shame, and The 9513’s Free Music series is here to help set you down the right path.
Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.
George Ducas - “Walk Through This World” Ducas banks on the success of recent artists’ pleasantly bland lyrics and agreeable instrumentation for his first release with WhiteStar Nashville.
In this exclusive interview for The 9513, Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook talks about life with the band, as well as A Place to Land, the group’s current album, which has charted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart on two separate occasions

jamey johnson is so rich that he doesn’t need me to actually buy his cd.

After saying on another thread here that I couldn’t get into Jamey Johnson or Ray Scott from what I’d heard, I have to take my comment back. Since then, I listened to Johnson’s first album on rhapsody in its entirety and really enjoyed it. I still don’t love “The Dollar”, but admit that it *is* kind of sweet. It’d be cool to hear him sing George Strait’s “Give It Away”, but not that Trace Adkins song.
I still haven’t been able to get into Ray Scott though.

I am a little underwhelmed by this album as I’ve already listened to it a few times. The title track is well done, but I just don’t think enough has been done overall on the album to compliment Johnson’s pure country voice, and the tracks seem to get a bit redundant after listening through them all.

No comparison between Scott’s music and Johnson’s. Scott’s singing cliche honky-tonk songs, while Johnson is singing about cocaine and whores.
Which one is the outlaw?

I just put them together because their voices sounded kind of similar to me upon initial listen, though it turns out that I like Johnson’s voice better.

Jamey Johnson is so authentic that airhead country fans don’t get him or his music…
This perfectly ties in to Matt’s fine interview with Jamey that was posted yesterday on Roughstock!

Some of Jamey’s answers are truly thought provoking and its a fine read.
Jamey was on the Opry recently and Bill Anderson had Jamey join him on a duet version of “Give It Away”. Bill said it was the first time they had performed it together since demoing it in Tony Brown’s living room one night at 2 AM….
I previously won this album here as a download, but since I don’t download I didn’t collect my prize! Here’s my chance! (Actually I’ll gladly purchase this retail to support a true country artist release on a major label, sadly a rarity these days….)
Leeann, welcome aboard the Jamey train! (lol)

I LOVED hearing Jamey Johnson’s “That’s Why I Write Songs” from his unplugged session at CMT. God, just an amazing song.

Jamey Johnson’s is so addictive that he’s my choice of drug.
Jamey will be back on the Opry again twice this Saturday night - too bad it won’t be televised. We saw him play during fan fair @ Riverfront and I’ve gotten to hear this album when it came out digitally. There are too many great songs on this one, unreleased material, and the first album, as well as album cuts from other folks, it’s hard to pick just one favorite.

Jamey Johnson is so stone-cold country that he makes Kenny Chesney sound pop…

HA!
Jamey is so Austin-acious that he could date Deb.

Jamey Johnson is so damn talented at singing AND songwriting that he has quite possibly made “In Color” my favorite song of the 2000s. (That says a lot.)
Jamey Johnson is so neo-trad that most PDs wouldn’t touch him with any length foot pole.
Jamey Johnson is so broad in his reach that he can write a song about badonkadonks that nobody likes AND a song about black-and-white photos that EVERYone likes.
I’d like to hear Jamey’s rendition of Another Side of You. I thought that was a great song when Joe Nichols recorded it, but Jamey’s slightly deeper, more resonant voice seems like the only thing that would make it even better.
July 30, 2008 at 8:02 pm Permalink
Like most other people I would like to hear him sing “Give It Away.”

Jamey Johnson is so real and authentically country he’ll make you want to slap your Mama.
(I lifted that line from Hazel Smith …)
Favorite JJ written song is definitely ‘In Color’ …
July 30, 2008 at 8:50 pm Permalink
To be honest, there have been more times that I’ve been inclined to slap my mama than my grandma.:)
July 30, 2008 at 8:53 pm Permalink
Leeann: We are the ones who are of the same generation right? Remember that dinner scene in the first episode of My So Called Life?
July 31, 2008 at 7:10 am Permalink
Perhaps one of the reasons I’ve wanted to “slap my mama” is because she was extremely uptight/strict when we were kids. So, I missed a lot of pop culture from that time. Therefore, I do not know of the scene about which you are referring. By the way, I don’t really want to slap her. As a teen, I sometimes dreamed of it though.:)
July 31, 2008 at 7:50 am Permalink
There was this scene when Angela talked about lately all she wanted to do was stab her mom.
The great thing about the episode is that Angela fights with her mom because she dies her hair screaming red, then she sneaks out without getting caught, comes home, sees her dad (whom she worships) talking with another woman and winds up in bed with her mom bawling and apologizing for her hair.
Which was why that show rocked.

Jamey’s music is so amazing I can’t wait to see him in Color.
It’s lame, I know. But I like to own it hard copy. I hardly doubt I’ll even be able to find such a gem of a record in my small town. I have the worst time finding music around here as it is and while I own my ipod like everyone else, I’m a purist and like to own it.
Jamey is so great live, I saw him a couple of years ago open for Rhett Akins no less.

Jamey Johnson is so manly he personally kicked each member of Rascal Flatts’ rear ends for the atrocity of “Bob That Head.”

For those who listed “Give It Away” as one of the song they’d like to hear Jamey Johnson sing, you’re in luck. He sang the song at his Unplugged at Studio 330 session.
August 1, 2008 at 12:00 pm Permalink
Thanks for that link. I really hope CMT can work something out, someday, so that they can release a compilation of Studio 330 Sessions. The sound quality is nice and crisp and I’ve grown to appreciate so many artists by hearing their music stripped down as they are for the Sessions.

Rhapsody has a few exclusives from Studio 330, but I don’t know how they choose which ones they add.

I would like to thank Ms. Hazel Smith for the line about slapping your Mama. She said that about her mashed potatoes I believe, on CMT’s Southern Fried Flicks. She showed the Jerry Lee Lewis biopic ‘Great Balls of Fire’ that night …

I would want Jamey to put his spin on the hit song Angel by Natasha Bedingfield.
