Jamey Johnson Celebrates Success of That Lonesome Song

  • Universal Music Group Nashville chairman Luke Lewis has been selling records for 35 years and he says Jamey Johnson achieving gold status for That Lonesome Song, which was celebrated at a BMI party on Tuesday, is the proudest moment of his career. When asked what mark he’s trying to leave on country music, Johnson responded:

I know that what all of us should be striving for is to make country music the family that it used to be and not this competitive sport that it’s turned into these days.

“For me it’s an honor, as an artist, to have other artists at this party with us today. You know, friends that are not focused on, ‘How did he get a gold album when I don’t have a gold album?’ Just friends. Everybody comes out to celebrate it together. To me, that’s what it’s supposed to be like. We’re all in this together. I think by the time it’s all said and done, nobody’s going to remember who sold more records or who had the most No. 1’s. Hell, half of the No. 1’s today, you’re not going to remember the song 20 years from now. So in the grand scheme of things, what’s it going to matter? I think what’s going to matter is relationships when we get old and gray.

  • By now I’m sure you heard that Kris Allen won American Idol over Adam Lambert yesterday, and even sang a duet with Keith Urban on “Kiss A Girl.” I won’t make a habit of mentioning Idol here, but Steve Martin must have done something right, too. We had over 2,000 people hit the site searching specifically for “Pretty Flowers,” which we highlighted back in February.

What are some of the changes you’ve noticed in the music industry?

There are like two labels and it’s all consolidated. You’re either on a major label or you’re amongst the multitudes of indie artists and that’s what I am now. … It’s a different position for me to be in — I have to use a lot of my right brain and it kind of hurts.

Maybe Chuck Mead’s brain hurts because it’s flipped?

There’s a good article about my friend and occasional co-writer Sarah Siskind (Alison Krauss cut her “Goodbye Is All We Have” and “Simple Love,” among others) here: http://www.tennessean.com/article/20090521/ENTERTAINMENT01/905210306/Songs%20smooth%20Sarah%20Siskind%20s%20journey . I’d call her new album a rock record, and she calls it a rock record, but I’m guessing a lot of folks around here would not only enjoy it, but call it some kind of country ;-).

Jamey Johnson’s comments at his Gold Record party were really interesting. I don’t expect Jamey to “sell out” to commercialism anytime soon….

My mom ended up calling me when Steve Martin was pickin the ole banjo on American Idol. Quite humorous. Even more so…Cyndi Lauper played a Dulcimer on “Time After Time” and folks were calling it a mandolin. Go figure.

Glad to hear Jamey having the gold party. On the Oak Ridge Boys Twitter, they have a photo of them with Jamey and his dad.

Rick – Thanks for the reminder on the Opry show! It looks like they are having a Conway Twitty one pretty soon & Jeff Bates is playing. I’m actually surprised & pleased at how they are doing those shows. Something different for a change.

I like Kris Allen, but he isn’t even close to country.

The Steve Martin song on Idol would have been better if they had found two people who had at least some notion of how to sing. Bluegrass isn’t typically belted out like a Mariah Carey song.

Kris Allen could have a country career, as he has a Southern accent, plays guitar and looks good. It doesn’t take much more than that these days.

Thanks for the link. I wish the label would have released ‘You Didn’t Have A Good Time’ as a single.

“Pretty Flowers” isn’t a typical bluegrass song – in fact, it’s arguably not a bluegrass song at all, or at least the arrangement on The Crow is, banjo notwithstanding, not a bluegrass one.

Kris Allen may be a guy ‘country’ labels want, but I doubt he tries it. Now, Danny Gokey is the one who’d fit country these days in both image and voice.

I don’t think anyone should be promoting Chris Brown to cross over, particularly given his violent tendencies.

Danny Gokey wouldn’t fit country at all, both in the way he looks and because his voice is nowhere close to country

No one from AI this season will (or at least shouldn’t) take the country route

According to “Music City TV” Neko Case is coming to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on July 25th. Here are the details:
“Also, Neko Case will be here at The Ryman on July 25, and her tickets are $32.50, $27.50 and $25. Those go on sale at 10 a.m. on May 29th.”

So which 9513 reviewer gets to report on this one?

PS – Willie Nelson has received a new honor from the state of Texas! (Per AllAboutCountry.com):

Willie Nelson: 2009 Texas State Musician
By Order Of The Texas Legislature

Yesterday (5/20), the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas filed the appointment of Willie Nelson as their 2009 Texas State Musician. Bill HCR 254 states, in part:

“WHEREAS, Willie Nelson is the 2009 Texas State Musician; this legendary Texas performer was playing the guitar at the age of 6 and performing at 10; after establishing himself in Nashville as a hit songwriter, he returned to Texas and soon became world-famous as an interpreter of his own songs and as an icon of the outlaw country music movement; he has further distinguished himself as a film and television actor and entrepreneur, as well as an ever-popular touring concert artist who has been involved in numerous charity events such as Farm Aid.”

AllAboutCountry caught up with Willie in the middle of his spring touring schedule and got this quote: “I consider it a great honor, and I want to thank everyone who helped make it happen.”

In a related vein the Texas State Legislature has declared Marijuana to be “2009 Texas State Herbal Remedy”….

Danny Gokey wouldn’t fit country at all, – in the way he looks

Really?? You honestly think one of these looks (or sounds) more (or less) country than the other?

I feel like a lot of this is really more in reference to him singing 2 country songs (”Jesus, Take the Wheel” and “What Hurts the Most”) during the competition – instead of just 1 on Grand Ole Opry week

And he doesn’t look like Gary LeVox

    Nicolas,

Danny Gokey’s voice fits the white boy soul of James Otto, Charles Kelley, and tons of other artists currently doing well at country. Also, Idol had found far more success in Country than any other genre and he’s DOA at pop/rock so really his only choices are country and CCM and he’s likely to do well with either one he chooses.
