iPod Shuffle Contest Winners
This contest wouldn’t have been possible without the help of a lot of people and, of whom, we are very gracious for their support. So, I’d like to go through and thank each and every one of them and post their contact information so that anyone that appreciates their support can thank them as well.
Little Dog Records and Moot Davis
Moot Davis has a fantastic album and we look forward to his next release coming in the spring. Bob Bernstein over at Little Dog Records also deserves some recognition for his patience and willingness to work with us, and also for highlighting the contest in their company newsletter. We look forward to working with Bob and Little Dog Records again in the future.

Phoenix Publicity and Promotion and their roster of artists
It’s been a pleasure communicating with Laurie from Phoneix Publicity about the contest and the artists they support. I happened upon one of their artists by accident and discovered a whole bunch of great music because of Laurie. Big thanks are due to her. Joey Allcorn, The Skeeters, Brigitte London, Tony Brook, and Honk Tonk Disciples all agreed to participate and we are grateful for their support.

Aaron Watson and Unrest Music Group
Anthony “Gino” Genaro from Unrest Music Group was very supportive and agreed to participate right away. You can thank him for helping us get some of Aaron Watson’s music.

Dry Land Fish, Johnny Cooper, The Josh Davis Band, and Leah Durelle are all amazing artists and a big thanks goes out to all those guys for their participation. It’s artists like these guys that keep country music alive and make us want to write about and share the music that we love with others.

Note: Dry Land Fish disbanded stopped touring after their last album, but all of the band members gave us permission to use their music. Their CD can still be purchased on CD Baby and downloaded on iTunes.

Well, it’s the moment that everyone has been waiting for all month. Our contest giving away an iPod Shuffle loaded with country music has finally ended and it’s time to announce a winner. We didn’t put a limit on the number of times that you could enter, so every comment that was left by the same person increased the probability of that person being randomly chosen.
The Winners
By sheer statistical probability the winner of the iPod Shuffle, some great country music, and a t-shirt is: Matt C. If you’ve been reading the comments throughout the month you have undoubtedly noticed the great insight and knowledge that Matt possesses when it comes to country music. Congratulations to him, and thanks for not only reading The 9513, but also participating in the discussion.
The next randomly chosen winner was Jessica. Judging from all the comments she left she really wanted the iPod, but didn’t comment quite enough to beat out Matt. Congratulations to her for winning a t-shirt.
And the third and last winner for this month belongs to another regular commenter, and another Matt. Congratulations to him for winning a t-shirt as well.
We’ll be on contact with you guys sometime today to get your t-shirt sizes and mailing addresses.
We’d also like to thank everyone else who has read The 9513, participated in discussion through comments, and supported our efforts. If you didn’t win, don’t be discouraged, we’ll be announcing a couple of contests for February pretty soon.

Forgotten Artists: Cal Smith - When the Florida Sunshine Opry (Eustis, FL) booked its first “name” (non-local) act back in 1999, the act they chose was Cal Smith. No wonder, since Cal is an excellent singer, musician, storyteller and showman. | View more artists featured in Paul W. Dennis' recurring "Forgotten Artists" feature »

In an attempt to discover and highlight the best music every month, We'll be publishing a list of the best songs released throughout that period. Here's Brady Vercher's picks for October.

Free Music Downloads: If you’ve only recently come to country music, or have never delved past the genre’s surface and it’s most famous names, you may not have heard of Tom Russell. That’s a shame, and The 9513’s Free Music series is here to help set you down the right path.
Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.
George Ducas - “Walk Through This World” Ducas banks on the success of recent artists’ pleasantly bland lyrics and agreeable instrumentation for his first release with WhiteStar Nashville.
In this exclusive interview for The 9513, Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook talks about life with the band, as well as A Place to Land, the group’s current album, which has charted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart on two separate occasions
