Introducing Trailer Choir: “We’ll Have Grammy Winning Songs”

Trailer Choir’s Mark Fortney–more commonly known to fans by his stage name “Butter”–believes the emerging Show Dog Nashville trio, of which he is the so-called “comic leader and front man,” will go a long way in country music.
They just need to figure out how to pack for the trip.
“Vinny, are you bringin’ your suitcase with you?” he asks.
“Yeah, well, I don’t have to. We could consolidate.”
“Well, this is something we need to think about, too,” adds a female voice. It’s Crystal, Trailer Choir’s “cute blonde” (as described by Butter), who nonetheless seems to be the most pragmatic of the group. “My suitcase is completely full. And we have to bring merchandise with us from Chicago. Wait, are we driving back to Portland, or are we flying? I don’t remember. But we have to take the merchandise back with us, and I have no idea how we’re going to travel with it.”
So begins a day in the life of an up-and-coming, independent-label country music band. It’s not exactly the life of luxury that most music fans would expect, what with having to transport your own T-shirts and CDs across the country. But for Fortney and his bandmates, these little logistical hiccups are only bumps on the road to bigger things. Much bigger.
“I think, on this album, we’ll have Grammy winning songs,” Butter says of the trio’s debut effort–which is currently “about halfway finished,” and which should be in stores, if all goes according to plan, in time for Christmas. “I think we’ll have a first album that could go down in the history of sales. We believe that much in what we’re doing.”
Signed by Toby Keith to his label in mid 2006, Trailer Choir is a band that, despite its unorthodox appearance and a string of off-the-wall songs with names like “Off The Hillbilly Hook” and “Rockin’ The Beer Gut,” insists that it is artistically genuine, a culmination of the melding of three distinct personalities.
“We always get asked, in a sort of roundabout way, ‘who came up with this, who manufactured this?’” Crystal says. “It may look like that’s what happened because we are a very different looking group. But we’re not something that was manufactured. Toby’s been great about just letting us be who we are.”
“It’s more than just a gimmick,” Vinny adds.
Point Of Convergence
Butter’s musical dreams didn’t start to take shape until his college years. The Ashtabula, Ohio, native had written a few songs as a teenager, and had performed a cover of Mellencamp’s “Small Town” at a high school talent show, but hadn’t really thought about a career in the music industry until he enrolled in a Recording Arts class at a local community college.
“The class had one mic and one mic cable,” Butter says. “We were basically recording into a boom box.”
But at the end of the term, the class was scheduled to take a field trip to a studio in Cleveland, where they would record a song in better facilities. “Everyone in the class had to submit a song, and the class voted on which one we’d record. 98% of the class picked my song. It was at that moment I realized that this is something I could do. I started to realize I might be able to be good at this.”
So the northern boy, who grew up memorizing Poison songs, moved south to Nashville, and transferred into the Recording Arts program at Middle Tennessee State University, a school located about an hour away from Nashville in Murfreesboro.
“That program changed my life completely,” he says. “I got everything out of that program any one person could get. I was a lab assistant, I was an engineer, I learned about copyright law, publishing, management, so many things about the business, as well as developing my creative side at that point. Everything that I deal with today I learned at that school.”
Vinny, on the other hand, took a less academic approach–although his musical aspirations also started to cement in the days following his high school graduation.
“I worked at Sonic my whole life,” says the four-hundred pound former football star from Perry Country, Tennessee.
Once school–and football–ended, Vinny, whose middle name is Van Zant, found himself with a lot of spare time and very little to do with it. So he had his younger brother teach him to play the guitar, and he started writing songs.
Just a few years later, after moving to Nashville, he had signed a publishing deal as a songwriter.
By 2003, Butter and Vinny were both renting “offices” on Music Row–(the so-called offices that line the famed Nashville street are really residential houses that have been converted into working space for publishers and writers)–when their musical partnership first began to bloom.
“My life had kinda turned upside down,” Butter says. “I lost a girl, and I was drinking all the time. Basically, I never left this office.” He stayed inside, isolated, and wrote songs day and night.
“I wasn’t a pretty person,” he says.
“One day, at about four in morning, I’m sitting out on the front porch playing a guitar with three strings on it, and Vinny, who was renting the place next door, came in late from somewhere and we started talking. He picked up that guitar and I swear lights were turning on all up and down the street, ’cause Vinny has the biggest voice I’ve ever heard. We started, at that moment, becoming musical friends.”
Crystal Clear
If the first incarnation of Trailer Choir wasn’t formed on that early morning on Butter’s front porch, it wasn’t long after until the pair officially became a duo.
But they wouldn’t stay one.
Butter and Vinny set out making road trips around the southeast, playing parties and frat houses–sticking mostly to sets full of covers, with an occasional original or two mixed in–and booking dates in Nashville. The response to their music and their show was overwhelmingly positive. And they had endeared themselves to one fan in particular–Crystal.
Crystal, who grew up listening to Reba and Strait in a “tiny, tiny town” in mid-south Louisiana, had seen Butter and Vinny performing together around Nashville, and she knew both of them casually, as is often the case in the close-knit community of Nashville musicians. She thought they were great. But something was missing. And one night she figured out what that thing was–they needed a female harmony.
What happened next changed the band forever. Crystal jumped up on stage–uninvited–and took over Vinny’s mic.
“I backed away slowly, and didn’t let her hit me,” he says.
Rockin’ The Good Stuff
Less than two years later, the trio is on a tour bus in Los Angeles, talking to this reporter as they get ready to make the long trip north to Seattle, where they’ll be opening on the main-stage of Toby Keith’s Big Dog Daddy Tour. The trio will also appear in Keith’s upcoming movie, Beer For My Horses, and their debut single, “Off The Hillbilly Hook,” is featured on the film’s soundtrack.
I ask the band if, considering the unorthodox style and tone of the songs they’ve released so far, they’re worried about becoming pigeonholed as a “novelty” act.
“What does novelty mean?” Butter counters, a hint of frustration rising in his voice. He’s not confrontational, but there is passion bubbling below the surface of his answer. It’s the kind of response that comes from someone who genuinely cares about his music.
“What would you consider to be novelty about Trailer Choir?” He asks me. “What defines ‘good’ and ‘novelty’ and ‘serious’? When you hear that…to me, it means something that doesn’t have a chance at longevity, something that’s here to make a quick impact and then go away. But we’re built from songwriting. We know the depth. We’d stand in the same room with Craig Wiseman or Jeffrey Steele all day long and write songs and be competitive. When you get past “Beer Gut” and some of the fun stuff–which I think will always be a part of what we do–there’s a very serious side, and a very compassionate side.”
“…We love who we are,” Crystal adds.
And, clearly, this is a band that loves where it’s going.
Now all they need to do is figure out how to get their stuff there, too.

They are unorthodox but clearly are talented. Nice Piece, Jim.

That’s a pretty bold statement there!
I just went to their myspace page and I think “Off The Hillbilly Hook” sounds just like a Cowboy Troy song (which is NOT a compliment in case you’re wondering).
I listened to all four clips, and I really didnt hear anything I particularly liked.
“Next Five Beers” was probably the best, and that’s just because I liked the melody and harmony. I dont care for the lead singer’s voice.

When a band picks a name like “Trailer Choir” and then complains that people consider them a novelty act, what were they expecting? Having an obese Bubba stereotype lead member isn’t going to help matters either. Heck, even “Crystal” sounds like a stripper’s name. This looks like a band you’d expect to see performing in front of a theater having a John Waters’ film festival.
Looking at them, along with that name, reminded me of this raunchy white trash send up band that sells their CD on CD Baby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/snowwhitetrash
(Parental Warning: Some songs are really coarse, and equally hilarious.)
The “Trailer Choir” boys sound like they are getting above their raising when judging their songwriting abilities. It makes me appreciate the sense of reality and humility of John Russell who writes excellent humor songs and leads “JR & The Roadkill Choir”. On the back of their fine “Bring a Shovel” CD John is wearing a T-shirt that says “If You Can’t Find A GOOD Band, Give Us A Call!”. (lol)
Toby hasn’t scored any real chart success with any of the acts he’s signed to “Show Dog” thus far. In fact in the last few weeks many of his original staff members have resigned (as reported at allaboutcountry). Its nice Toby is showcasing Show Dog acts Carter’s Chord and Trailer Choir on his current tour, but without Top 40 radio airplay support this is meaningless. The Wrights opened for uncle Alan Jackson’s 2005 tour and Katrina Elam opened for Keith Urban on one of his tours and look how far that got them. Crystal is very pretty, but mainstream country is packed with pretty women these days and that angle won’t get them very far….
July 29, 2008 at 7:38 pm
They look and sound like Sugarland added Cletus T. Judd to its lineup. There’s nothing about them that doesn’t scream novelty act, and I can’t see them being taken seriously. They’re not awful, but aside from the look, they’re not memorable at all.
July 29, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Despite my nom-de-plum, I find this group’s bit lacking thus far. I won’t write them off yet, but I’m not overly impressed. Maybe if they’d hit dead center of the redneck revolution 3 years back they might sell like hot cakes. As it stands, I think Toby’s gonna have to do a lot of pushing. They do seem to be talented, but they are definitely pigeon-holed as a “themed” act, if not a novelty act, fair or not.
July 29, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Rick: Trailer Bride didn’t have the novelty problem, but then again, Trailer Bride isn’t novelty.
The band itself reminds me of a South Park version of Southern Culture on the Skids. Except I doubt Trailer Choir could pull of an album of country standards.
July 29, 2008 at 8:40 pm
While I’m not into the music that I heard on their myspace, this article was excellent! It made me interested enough to give them a try.
July 29, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I agree that the article was good. If Trailer Choir wrote as well as Jim they would be a far better band.
July 30, 2008 at 7:01 am
Thanks for the compliments, guys.
I went in to this interview expecting one thing from the band, and I found something completely different. I was genuinely surprised and impressed by their attitude and sincerity.
July 30, 2008 at 7:55 am
They do come across a lot more interesting in the interview than in their music.
July 30, 2008 at 9:12 am
I’ve heard three of their songs and am not impressed. Their newest single, Off The Hillbilly Hook, is the most redeeming, with a catchy tune that fits the current Top 40 pretty well, but is certainly not something that traditional country fans will relish. I must say though, although I haven’t seen a ton of pictures of the woman in the group, she looks like she could compete with any of the current country ladies as far as looks go… so if I was the band’s publicist, I’d get her image out there as much as possible.
July 30, 2008 at 10:51 am
Sam G. great comment.
Excellent writing Jim! The article was fun to read but I certainly won’t be making a rush to see this group.
July 30, 2008 at 11:45 am
The other thing that bugged me is that they had to open every song with “Holla!” Um, did it suddenly become 2001 again? If country music cannot come up with its own hip-hop cliches, can it at least steal them from this year?
July 30, 2008 at 1:13 pm
We know the depth. We’d stand in the same room with Craig Wiseman or Jeffrey Steele all day long and write songs and be competitive.
anyone else think this illustrates their lack of depth?
July 30, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Even people who CAN stand in a room with CW and JS and be competitive dont make those kinds of statements. Sheesh!
July 30, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Are we in Kristian Bush territory?
July 30, 2008 at 1:52 pm
haha, actually my point was that considering CW and JS as “deep” songwriters is sort of telling.
If they said “we can stand in a room with Guy Clark and Billy Joe Shaver” or even “Todd Snider and Mike Stinson” then I’d say, alright, they’re a confident bunch, but at least their aim is true.
but to take pride that you are as deep a songwriter as Jeffrey Steele?
note: I understand that Jeffrey Steele is successful beyond anybodies wildest dreams at writing Rascal Flatts and Montgomery Gentry songs, but a super rich pop songwriter does not a deep country songwriter make…or something.
July 30, 2008 at 1:57 pm
i have been to hundreds of these guys shows they are amazing and put on a better live show than any act out there they are the future and as far as there writing goes they write songs that all of us old country boys and girls love to dance to songs about us because they are just like us o and when u see there show u never forget
July 30, 2008 at 1:58 pm
I wasnt referring to the “deep” part, but rather to the “competitive” part. Like ‘em or not, they are who you have to compete with right now.
July 30, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Do a lot of songwriters stand when they write? I usually see them sitting.
July 30, 2008 at 2:01 pm
It all just seems so hokey. I mean, what is the point of the front man being so grosely obese? Country fans want great music, not some comedy act.
July 30, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Why dont all of u people go to youtube or there myspace and see what the fans think we love trailer choir and we will keep them around forever
July 30, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Paula,
that’s fair enough.
July 30, 2008 at 2:03 pm
i bet big vinny could beat any of u in a foot race
July 30, 2008 at 2:04 pm
And unfortunately what you hear on “airhead country radio” (as it’s known on this board, and I cant always say I disagree), is not neccesarily their best (deepest) work. Which is really sad for all songwriters that they put all their songs out there and the best ones are not what is chosen to be recorded. It looks good on payday, and I for one would not look a big fat paycheck in the mouth, but I’d keep hoping that someday the tide would turn and my best work would get chosen.
July 30, 2008 at 2:05 pm
o and why would u want another 6 foot skinny dick in a hat this is amazing that u would want someone to fail because he is large
July 30, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Punctuation is your friend. Don’t be afraid of it.
July 30, 2008 at 2:08 pm
hey while yal are on there myspace check there personal pages to see some more songs they wrote. also these guys do write with all the top songwriters cw js the warren brothers tony mullins they have written several songs with all those guys and are friends with them just face it trailer choir is the future of country
July 30, 2008 at 2:11 pm

July 30, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Wow!!! I can’t believe all this. I was googling TRAILER CHOIR after i saw there show in Las Vegas with TOBY KEITH and i came across this article. The article is great and is all true. Now i read these comments and i cant believe it. They were amazing and the crowd loved them. I personally thought they were the best part of the night and i love there writing its real. You people need to get with the times. These guys and beautiful lady are more country than anyone listen to the lyrics. Also you should be ashamed of yourself for saying you don’t understand why the lead guy is so big. who cares if hes big he moves like a pro athlete and he makes people smile. I love these guys they made my 23rd wedding anniversary the best.

Yeah, when I read that I had to channel Juno with her “Woah dream big!”
July 30, 2008 at 2:42 pm
They’re saying that they are more than just a gimmick” reminds me of a scene from “Dill Scallion,” a country music parody film from about a decade ago. Dill is a cowboy hat act on the rise, and when he meets with a Music Row executive-type who has just signed him, the executive brings up that they need to talk about his “image.” Dill says he’s the real deal and wants to be seen as authentic, so he doesn’t want any phony “image.” Then he adds, “But how about we find me a gimmick? That would help, wouldn’t it?”
July 30, 2008 at 2:46 pm
We like when people leave comments and express their opinions, even when they disagree with us. Everybody should have passion for the artists they enjoy.
We don’t like when you comment several times in a row and change names. You know who you are and if you continue to change names we’ll be forced to remove your comments.
July 30, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I think Trailer Choir has a great gimmick that adds to the live show. But the music can stand on it’s own. I bought all four songs on itunes and have not stopped listening. Also i went to there personal myspaces and wow they have some more great songs.

I grew up on a farm too. We had four horses, 157 chickens, 6 rabbits, 18 cats, three dogs various game birds, 15 guns and close to 2000 books. Despite being raised on a farm my sister and I both managed to get one of them fancy store bought college educations. In fact, my farmer grandfather managed to raise four kids who had nothing less than a masters among them AND despite an 8th grade education read Faulkner and Roth on a regular basis. My 8th-grade-educated-farmer grandfather celebrated my English degree by buying me an illustrated Strand Conan Doyle omnibus because I was a Victorian Lit fan and he didn’t let either the farming or the 8th grade education keep him from knowing what that meant. My farmer/railroader dad can tell you anything you want to know about history and can do complicated maths faster in his head than you can with a calculator. My teacher/farmer mother can tell you equal ammounts about Shakespeare and cooking.
Don’t shove farmers into that ludicris illiterate redneck box. Literacy and farm work are not mutially exclusive. Being illiterate is a choice that has nothing to do with who you are or where you were raised. You write poorly because you write poorly, not because you live on a farm and do farm work.
Sterotypes are not helpful to anyone.
July 30, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Amen, Stormy!
July 30, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I heard “Off the Hillbilly Hook” and I thought it was all right. Not great, but still pretty good. I especially like that they have a bass singer *and* a female singer, it really makes for an unusual harmony.
July 30, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I love the Trailor chior… u guys are awesome
July 30, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Oh, and sorry for the double post — whoever said “It looks like Sugarland added Cledus T. Judd to their lineup” might wanna take a look at Cledus T. Judd. He’s shed all the pounds and is actually kinda buff now.
July 30, 2008 at 3:40 pm
I also grew up on a farm, fwiw. Somehow I still learned to read and write.
July 30, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Stormy’s so country she almost surpasses both Jamey Johnson and Chris N in their country-ness!!
July 30, 2008 at 3:52 pm
It’s not that i can’t. I do know how. The argument shouldn’t be about my typing. Just be honest how many of you have been to a Trailer Choir show. It’s an experiance you won’t forget. You will humm the songs for the next month. It will become an addiction for you. I know cuz i live in nashville. i have been to a hundred of there shows and it always makes me smile and have a good time. it makes me forget about all the problems in the world for a few hours. All im sayin is go to a show then come back on here and leave a comment.
July 30, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Wow,That was one amazing article and I can’t believe all the negative comments here. I’ve seen Trailer Choir numerous time and even drove over 6 hours just to see an hour show. I think they are the best up and coming group on country music radio and on CMT. I say everyone should check out their myspace pages (the band as a whole and each of their personal pages),their website and youtube. They have more fans then you people think and will be huge! CMT seems to like them since they were put on heavy rotation.
July 30, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Unfortunately, since I live in the middle of nowhere where hardly any artists dare to go, I can’t judge very many artists by their shows. They must translate well to studio recordings for me to judge them. If I had to wait to make a decision about an artist by their shows, I would be allowed to listen to hardly any music at all.
July 30, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Furthermore, if I do go to a concert, I want to know that I’m spending my money on a concert I’ll enjoy which is usually determined by what I hear on their albums.
July 30, 2008 at 4:12 pm
The following, is sattirical in nature (don’t want to take a chance with that one)…
I believe myself to be the greatest country singer alive, I will squash the records of my personal favorite singer, Garth Brooks in both album sales and CD sales. I will then go on to win Entertainer of the Year every year until I tell everybody I’ve won enough of them, which will of course prompt them to give me them for the next five consecutive years. If Kenny wins, it’s because I told Kenny he could win and cast my vote for him, my vote equals 51% of all CMA voters. After that, I will sell my CMA Awards on Ebay and they will go for a fortune, I am, of course – the greatest to ever live. I will win multiple grammy’s and use them as door stops, I’m that good. Once I open my first record label and my debut album for the label goes lutetium (because lutetium is more precious than diamond, it’s one billion copies, of course you wouldn’t know what lutetium is like me because I’m the greatest) I will not brag, but just know proudly that I’m the best. I assume every other label will close down, along with all other publishers – because, of course, I’m the only person capable of writing a hit song and you’ll be blessed if I choose you to record one of my songs. If I do choose you to record one of my songs for your album, I will not sing backup – you will sing backup for me and you’ll be satisfied with that. If not, I’ll run you clear out of town. If you stay in town, I will buy the town and then evict you.
Trailer Choir’s good, but that’s what I get from this interview. You have to keep some things in your own mind and prove it before you say it.
July 30, 2008 at 4:31 pm
I believe most of us went to their myspace…..
July 30, 2008 at 4:42 pm
i knew i could enjoy heavy metal but i never thought i’d enjoy heavy dungarees. “in my next five beers” is some song.
July 30, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Stormy, I think it was being suggested that going to their myspace isn’t enough, we need to actually go to a live show to know how great this group is.
July 30, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Toby Keith doesn’t play Austin like he plays those farms in Nashville.
July 30, 2008 at 7:14 pm
*cough* Pat Green *cough*
July 30, 2008 at 7:16 pm
There’s only two people that I would even consider going to a Toby Keith concert to see, and even if I did, I’d leave before Toby came on.
July 30, 2008 at 7:32 pm
I have heard Trailer Choir many times. I have met all three of them several times. There music is wonderful, and they are very nice people. They played at FrogFest in Verona NY in June and they brought down the park. Just so you know by 1pm the park had hit capacity load and had to close the doors. Trailer Choir were at many of Tobys shows last year, they came out to the parking lots, met fans and performed. They were great. I have loved each and very time I heard them sing, and perform. I look forward to seeing them at the upcoming Toby shows. Take a moment and listen and given them a chance and I think you will love the.

Anybody else find it a bit strange that there’s a bunch of new names posting on this saying how great Trailer Choir is? Methinks that a want-to-be publicist is really enjoying himself here.
July 30, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Drew,
This article was posted in many many places for Trailer Choir fans to read and comment. There are so many Trailer Choir fans out there. Its a shame that people will judges others by the way they look. Why don’t you go to their myspace, write them letters, get to know them and their music before you judge.
July 30, 2008 at 8:12 pm
You have to write people letters before you’re allowed to judge the quality of their music? Oh man… I’m in trouble.
July 30, 2008 at 8:25 pm
I saw them several times last year and was not impressed at all. They are a gimmick and a pretty face but the musicianship is lacking. The “Off the Hillbilly Hook” video is a commercial for Toby’s movie, not an artist music video. I do take music seriously and this isn’t it. I can’t imagine a 90 minute set from them and I find the songwriting comment ridiculous.
July 30, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Not my style
July 30, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Laura: How many more chances do we need to give them before the subliminal messages kick in and we become fans?

And they all misspell / misuse the exact same words! :-)

hey marie why did u see them several times last year if u didnt like them why did u keep going to there shows i think some one is a closet fan look it dont matter these guys are the future of country music like it or leave it
July 30, 2008 at 10:14 pm
And we are all a bunch of h8ers who need to accept the fact that old country is dead and we should just turn off our radios if we don’t like it, right?
The thing is, we already have.
July 30, 2008 at 10:21 pm
I don’t understand why everytime someone writes a nice comment everyone else jumps on them. Okay.. we all get it, you don’t like their music then don’t listen to it and why stay here. JUST MOVE ON. There are people in the world that love Trailer Choir and their music.
July 30, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Because we are tired of hearing about all the many, many times we have to listen to music or the inumerable hoops we have to jump through before we are permitted to dislike them.
Reverse the question for a second: When one of the fans googled this and ran to tattle….er posted it on their website, why did you all have to come over here and jump on us?
July 30, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Okay. You’ve made you point in not likeing them. MOVE ON!
My first comment was just saying how much I liked Trailer Choir and traveled high and low to go see them in concert. I continue to keep posting because there is no reason to bash a band. Read the article and move on. No reason to comment it if you don’t like them or the article.
Is there a problem if Trailer Choir fans email each other articles about their favorite band?
July 30, 2008 at 10:37 pm
This is they make chocolate and vanilla… everyone is entitled to their personal tastes, so I just don’t see the need to bash people for liking something different than you. I LOVE Trailer Choir!! They are great people and have talent so far beyond the limited sampling the haters here have bothered to look at… Let the Trailer Choir fans enjoy this nice article and move on.
July 30, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Trailer Choir is not a cookie cutter group. They are different and that’s what sets them apart. They have the talent and the stage presence that some experienced performers lack.
It really upsets me to think that just because Vinny is not a rail, people are going to dismiss the amazing voice of his. Crystal, Butter and Vinny are going to make it in this tough industry, it’s just a matter of time. People want new and fresh and that is them. Toby Keith believes in them and so do I.
I first saw them on the side stage of the Toby Keith tour last year and knew they would prosper. Now, on the Biggest & Baddest Tour this year they are on the main stage and they really and truly deserve to be there. I have met them in person as well and you have never met more humble and gracious people.
Don’t go by what people say and decide for yourself. You must see them live, it will make you a fan.
July 31, 2008 at 12:07 am
you now you guys say all these comments and stuff about the music they make…you know how about you go to a show and listen to them and see them live. i am an afghanistan and iraq vet. and they are so into troop welfare and they are very down to earth and awesome people…vinny is a friend i say to myself….i hung out with him in vegas.
so you guys need to just sit back enjoy the music and stop trying to bring them down cause they made it and you didnt.
but TC is a good group of people making awesome music and living thier dream…and i am proud that i know them and they are proud that they know me.
July 31, 2008 at 12:49 am
Trailer Choir is so great! They have an awesome sound, and tons of talent. And – although I agree that they are not just a novelty act because they have wonderful harmony and super voices – they DO have that niche that no one forgets. Vinny doing the worm on stage… come on! That’s not something you forget. I’m thinking with all that talent, that look that wont be forgotten, and their FUN, down to earth attitude and lyrics, this group is going places!
July 31, 2008 at 2:22 am
Before I saw Trailer Choir Live for the first of MANY times last year, opening on a side stage at at Toby Keith show… I was very skeptical. I only heard part of one of there songs… and didnt know anything about them. We went over early to watch the act. They sang there songs and within 5 minutes EVERYONE that was anywhere near that side stage was dancing… I aint just saying young teenagers, I am talking older adults as well. Vinny came out and was making people dance and it ended up being like we were all on a a giant dance floor. I HATE dancing, but found myself dancing with people I didnt even know. (NO I WASNT DRUNK… didnt even have a drink). It was a GOOD TIME. I had more fun with them then one of the main opening acts. No, I am not talking about Flynnville Train either. They are another act that I cant get enough of on Toby’s label along with Mica Roberts. (which btw… someone said on here that non of Toby’s label mates are doing well… did you hear her song that hit CMT/GAC “Things A Mama Dont Know?” You missed out if you didnt.)
Vinny is halarious, but most of all… take the time to go up to the group after the show… they are genuinly nice and sincere people. I was baffled by them to be honest. They wanted to know what you thought, they wanted to know how they did. They were fantastic. Crystal is sweet, and a fantastic FANTASTIC singer. Check out her personal myspace page. Butter… look past his name… he is a very talanted man.
I saw them a total of 6 times since then… and will be seeing them a few more times this month. If you dont like there songs on the myspace (give them a chance if you havent)… try finding some of there songs… “Last Man Standing” or “Rollin Through The Sunshine” and several others not on there myspace. Get there cd when it comes out and you wont be dissapointed. They have party songs and they have deep songs. They are country IMO. I have been going to country concerts since i was 4. I am now 20. They are just as much country IMO as any other act that is being put out there in the past 10 years.
July 31, 2008 at 9:37 am
Here is the thing, by most accounts Ryan Adams is a ragging a-hole half the time, and that is being generous. I don’t buy his cds because he promises to be my BFF 4eva. I buy them because they contain REALLY good music.
July 31, 2008 at 9:42 am
Here’s the thing: If I have to listen to every single song a band puts out 25 times, go to 6 concerts and meet the band personally in order to like that band, I’m probably never going to like them. I’m lazy and that’s a lot of work. I like the kind of bands I can go to Barnes and Noble, listen to the 30 second sample clip and know that I like them.
July 31, 2008 at 9:59 am

July 31, 2008 at 10:24 am
Is that some sort of surrealist poetry? I think it’s going over my head.
July 31, 2008 at 10:28 am
well if you didnt have your head up ur ass it wouldnt go over your head
July 31, 2008 at 10:30 am
hey chris you do realize you have spent the last two days of your life talkin about trailer choir hmmmmm in the words of brad paisly the more you run there name down the more there price goes up
July 31, 2008 at 10:32 am
Is that how you really want to represent Trailer Choir as a fan?
Just as a warning, don’t leave any more comments of that nature or they’ll be removed.
July 31, 2008 at 11:50 am
CRUEZEL: I will. AND I’ll have Ryan Adams playing and that makes me THE WINNER!
But I do have to thank Trailer Choir. They inspired me to dust off my Southern Cutlure on the Skids cds.
Chris: So I’ll bring the Ryan Adams and you bring the beer? Unless you can bring the actual Ryan Adams. He’s single this second, right?
July 31, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Hey, I haven’t said a single unkind word about Trailer Choir. I like Trailer Choir just fine. It’s the many offenses against the English language in this thread that rankled me.
Stormy: Sadly, I have no access to the real Ryan Adams. I’ve long hoped he would get mad at me over a review and leave an expletive-filled voicemail, but no.
July 31, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Wow, we dream of the same thing. Although I think of somewhat DIFFERENT expletive-voice mails.
Next time, compare him to Kenny Chesney, FAVORABLY. That should do it.
July 31, 2008 at 12:31 pm
I hate that I am so late to this party. I cant stand the music from their myspace, so there. They may be nice people, but so is my grandma, and her music sux too…
July 31, 2008 at 1:15 pm
the definite verdict on trailer choir:
if i was a the owner of a place near the beach, anywhere on this planet, i’d book them right away for the whole season, have them play till “butter” becomes a dip-stick and make millions. a better summer-fun sound than theirs, i haven’t heard for a long long time. outstanding introduction mr. malec.
July 31, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I saw Trailer Choir for the first time at Walnut Creek in Raleigh Nc. last year on tour with Toby Keith! I came into the pavilion and they were performing “Rockin the Beer Gut”! I automatically fell in love with them. I have been crazy about them ever since. I got the opportunity to actually meet them this year and they are the most down-to-earth group of people that you will ever meet. Not only is the music unique…the performance is as well. You have got to see Vinny’s dance moves. When he does the worm onstage it will crack you up. I can not say enough about how much I admire these three people and what they mean to me. If you ever get the chance to see them you will feel the same way that I do! They are absolutely awesome!!
July 31, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I grew up with Vinny and let me tell you, he has been talented all his life! He has an outstanding personality and is so much fun to be around. These 3 people are totally talented, not only as individuals, but as a group, and not only as a group but as entertainers! People are all intitled to their own opinions, and personally, I LOVE TRAILER CHOIR!!!! And cant wait to see them perform again! If you ever lucky enough to meet them face to face, man….you get to know 3 of the nicest people ever, and I cant wait until they dominate country music. So to all you TRUE Trailer Choir Fans out there, keep on showin your love and support to these guys! Lets show the world how to rock it “OFF THE HILLBILLY HOOK”!! HOLLA!!
July 31, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Ryan Adams only became talented when he got bitten by that radio active spider.
July 31, 2008 at 5:05 pm
“Holla” has definitely jumped the shark.
July 31, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Trailer Choir is Truely GREAT music and GREAT PEOPLE.They give it their all and to me that’s what counts.Vinny’s talented period, his size should not matter! His heart and love for music does.If you know Trailer Choir and what they stand for you should be satisfied.Don’t hate something soooo good.As for Vinny we LOVE YOU just the way you are…Keep up the great work and haters you just don’t even know good music!
July 31, 2008 at 5:14 pm
I have to agree with at least one thing here–I really enjoyed talking to Vinny. There’s no pretense whatsoever.
July 31, 2008 at 5:23 pm
HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA, HOLLA! Keep up the GREAT work guys, its gonna be the best feeling ever when you guys are up there giving your award acceptance speeches at the CMA’s! Dont let the haters get you down! Its your fans, THE ONLY PEOPLE WHOS OPINIONS EVEN MATTER, that even needs reading! Dont waste your time on all the negative bull. As for the comments about Vinnys size, my god people, come on, if you got a problem with it, then your just hatin cause YOU cant move like he can! So keep on keepin on Trailer Choir, you have definatly got my respect! LOVE YALL!!
July 31, 2008 at 5:28 pm

July 31, 2008 at 7:08 pm
I like Southern Culture on the Skids which is what Trailer Choir seems to think they are–does that count?
July 31, 2008 at 7:52 pm
why do u not think there southern culture?
July 31, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Cruzel, I admire your new zen approach.:)
July 31, 2008 at 8:16 pm

July 31, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Cruzel: Because Southern Culture On The Skids is led by the righteously awesome Mary Huff. That girl in the picture there is not the righteously awesome Mary Huff.
July 31, 2008 at 8:24 pm
I’d recommend Vinny contact Cledus T. Judd and follow the Cledus weight loss / exercise regimen if this band wants to be accepted by mainstream radio. And “Butter” might want to go back to using his real name as well. They currently have all the trappings of a vaudeville schtick act and that won’t cut it with country radio types who want the artists they feature to be hip, beautiful, and cool (as they fancy themselves to be in the delusional realm of airhead country radio)…..
July 31, 2008 at 8:24 pm
well read her bio u should not judge someone on looks plus look at vinny he is as country as it gets i bet he has bucked more bails of hay than any of us there singin about moonshine good times beer guts under the moon light goin fishin in the dark down home how much more country do u want
July 31, 2008 at 8:30 pm
see thats the beauty of trailer choir they just wanna be them selves vinny is an unforgettable person also how many hits has cletus had since he has been skinny. none thats how many 0 real people wanna see real people make it it gives me hope that i can make it in my dream one day plus i bet vinny could run faster jump higher and go longer than u ever could who cares if hes bigg he is one of a kind and butter is butter because of his personality not because he named himself that o and if u remember back a little bit all the things yal are sayin about them people said about waylon and willie
July 31, 2008 at 8:41 pm
I can read her bio all I want, she still won’t be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvBcsCXtudA
SCOTS invented Trashbilly.
And most of us have had Fishing In the Dark on an album for 20 years:

July 31, 2008 at 8:44 pm
There’s the problem. I don’t want to see real people make it. I’m rooting for the Robots.
July 31, 2008 at 8:57 pm

“Dumb yankees”? Isn’t Butter from the north…
August 1, 2008 at 10:42 am
You know, I’m gonna miss that guy.
August 1, 2008 at 9:26 pm
I think Trailer Choir is excellent! I’ve seen them open for Toby twice this summer & loved their performances. Their songs are great & they’re really nice people. Their music is what matters, not their physical appearance or nicknames!
August 1, 2008 at 9:42 pm
I just got home from the St Louis concert and you guy really got things started with a bang! Great energy and good connection with the crowd. Your sound was really true on from where I was too. Hope good things are coming your way. Keep hanging with Toby and you can’t go wrong. See you in Dallas and Houston and San Antonio……
Susan from Springdale, AR
Tell Toby his girlfriend from Arkansas says Hi and am still waiting for his call..
August 1, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Just wanted to offer my good wishes to Trailer Choir and thank them for the many times they have brought a smile to my face. I’ve seen them live on at least 8 occasions, and will be seeing them 4 times in August. I can’t stop smiling, dancing, and enjoying the moment when I get a chance to see them! That’s the best thing about music — different music “speaks” to different people, and in the world of music, there is something for everyone! I’m just so happy that I’ve had the chance to hear Trailer Choir’s music, see them perform live, and had a chance to spend some time with them. I find each of them to have great talent and showmanship – and as importantly, each one of them is a warm and beautiful person with a big heart. Thanks Trailer Choir – looking forward to seeing you out on the road this summer!
August 2, 2008 at 6:52 am
Stormy you truly take the cake. What witch you are. Sorry but the way you talk about people makes you one ugly person. Since you only care what people look like you are the lowest of the low. I go to a concert to have fun and that is what TC does, makes me have fun. You can forget about the crappy day you had at work, the jerk that thinks she’s all that and anything else that went wrong. I don’t want to see somebody up there standing around doing nothing. Boring. A lot of artists I will listen to but won’t go see because they don’t do anything but stand there, they don’t know how to have fun. Give me TC and TK any day and I’m a happy camper. And I don’t care how BIG Vinny is, he has a big heart and all 3 of them are very nice. HOLLA TC, YOU ROCK.
August 2, 2008 at 7:12 am
Love your music!!
August 2, 2008 at 8:20 am
To all of you who dont like TC, that is fine, you have your own opinions. For those of us that love them, we will continue to support them any way we can. They play great music, they connect with the fans, and they are a lot of fun. For me, music is all about enjoying it and haveing fun. I will see TC three times in august and look forward to each time.
August 2, 2008 at 9:00 am
are they soon having a record out? “in my next five beers” is one of the most original bar-room conversations since brad paisley’s “me neither”.
August 2, 2008 at 11:15 am
Jean: The only thing I ever said about looks was that Crystal does not look like Mary Huff. The big problem with that is that it means she is not Mary Huff and that if I saw her on stage it would mean I had accidently wandering into an inferior trashbilly concerts and needed to find my way back to Southern Culture On The Skids fast. (It was, by the by, her bandmate Butter who opted in the interview to dismiss her as “the cute blond.”)
I don’t care about Vinny being overweight, except in as much as it is schtick that has been done. When I go to a concert I don’t want to hear schtick, I want to hear music. The last concert I went to, the “cute blonde” singer spent the entire concert bouncing back and forth between her guitar and her keyboard picking up her harmonica along the way. All she had to do was sing to transport the audiences spirits up through the rafters and return them to us shiney and new. Why would I settle for having fun at a concerts when I can have joy?
August 3, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Stormy vinny is a 400 lbs break dancer im pretty sure that has never been done also he is a great song writer go to his myspace page from trailer choirs top friends o and thats him singing on his personal page as well he is the most country boy of all the country artist out there. he dont just break dance he flat foots as well which i have not seen that since the real grande ole opry days and i went to the you tube link u sent im sure if anyone takes the time to see what u think is good music they will see that it is awful u will see in the near future that vinny is one of the most talented people ever. holla
August 3, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Two words: Fat Joe.
An most people on this board don’t even have to click the link. They already know SCOTS is awesome, and they have the history to back it up.
August 3, 2008 at 10:21 pm
fat joe was great but could not do the stuff vinny does. vinny does back flips the worm the splits pop and lock and flat footing. o and no S.C.O.T.S. S.U.C.K.S. i mean they look and sound like something from a rob zombie movie. i wish trailer choir and them could put on a contest show for show and see who sales more cds and shirts and who has the biggest crowd of course that will never happen cuz they aint on the same level as tc i mean there videos on you tube prove that they have very little views trailer choirs video has been up for one month and has 40000. wow i actually took u seriously as a music critic till i watched what u call great. you are now ofically dismissed from music class you made an f babydoll
August 3, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Fat Joe could also write a decent song.
SCOTS has been selling albums for more than a dozen years. You’re right, TC isn’t in their league.
August 4, 2008 at 2:33 am
vinny is a way better writer and ur rite tc aint in there league tc is pro and scots have been and always be at the same level rookie
August 6, 2008 at 1:03 am
Nothing eloquent or informative to say, just wanted to mention that anybody wearing a St. Louis Cardinals ballcap wins my respect.
August 9, 2008 at 1:07 am
I love these guys, met them in person — very awesome people!! Congrats to their success!
August 16, 2008 at 1:12 am
They’re terrible. Songwriting – terrible. Singing – horrible. This group would be why people think country music is corny. I mean, this just has to be the saddest thing ever. Cledus T. Judd joining Sugarland is the perfect description. They’re just ridiculous. It sounds like Disney trying to make a country phenomenon: rednecks by day, rockstars by night.
It really doesn’t matter if they’re fantastic live, because not everyone is going to see them live. Whoever hears them will most likely be hearing them on the radio or CMT/GAC. They’re myspace pages aren’t even good. Sorry, but being a “fantastic” live trio and being “the nicest people you’ll ever meet” doesn’t make up for having terrible music. And as for Vinny, it’s really not about his weight. It’s about him having no talent (in my humble opinion).
Haha Lucas, haha.
And Cruzel(and a few others), just chill. No personal attacks on people. It’s just music. Altho you did shed light on the get drunk when you’re at their show. Really helped me understand how to enjoy their music. But seriously, it’s music, not everybody likes the same thing. Don’t take it personally.
I’m sure these trailor choir people are really good people and very nice. And great for Vinny that he can be a good dancer.
August 16, 2008 at 1:13 am
Oh, thanks Stormy. I hadn’t listened to Ryan Adams before. He’s really good.
August 16, 2008 at 6:19 pm
You’re welcome.
August 22, 2008 at 5:16 pm
wow, you know its sad that some people get on here to bust other peoples bubbles! if your gettin on here to bash someone about their music, singing, talent, etc, then you just dont even need to leave a comment at all. its sad to know that people cant leave a comment to a group that they like without getting attacked! it just sickens me, TC you have so many fans out there, keep on doin what your doin and dont let negative people get you down, its not those people who help you succeed, so keep on writing, singing, entertaining and being the wonderful artists that you all are, Vinny you make us proud here in your hometown, we all knew how talented you are and that you would show the world, and that my friend is exactly what all 3 of you are doing! YOU GUYS ARE TERRIFIC! Lots of love from PC, amy
August 22, 2008 at 5:19 pm
I just can’t get into Ryan Adams. Believe me, I’ve tried.
August 22, 2008 at 6:50 pm
No comment on what Ryan could get into if he tried. (sorry).
September 11, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Wow! I just discovered Trailer Choir. I’m 62 years old and have been listening to Country for almost that long. I think Trailer Choir is awesome. Also, all of you people who don’t like Trailer Choir… just don’t buy their music. Personally, I’m looking forward to their album coming out and seeing them in person. The world needs humor and lively music. All you negative people, wait until you have lived a few more years before trying to tear down someone’s dream. And, I will tell you that if you don’t start talking more positively, you life is going to be a living HELL until you change. Just giving you the “facts of life”.
November 10, 2008 at 9:37 am
Most of yall make me sick!!! Who cares what size Vinny is if you would take the time to LISTEN to his voice and the songs he writes you would see a MAN that loves music and enjoys what he does!! Music is his dream and he is every good at it when you can hear someone sing a with out any music just tem standing there singing and to brings chill bumps up all over your body you know he his the real deal. He can sing like a bird and he it a very good witer I bet most of you would be supriced to know that be has have songs on hold with and sold to some of the biggest names in country music and I bet some of them are songs that you enjoy yourself so while you are setting her bashing him cause of his size maybe you should look at him for the SIZE of his heart and the passion that he puts into the county music that he loves to write and play for you even though you are bashing him and his Band. I hope that one day you have to eat all the bad words you have said about Trailer Chior and Vinny!!!! And honestly mo matter what you say about him it is not going to get him down it will just make him want to prove you wrong even more!!!
November 10, 2008 at 9:55 am
You’re NOT my boy, Blue!!!!
