In Second Week, Tim McGraw’s The Blind Side Keeps Pace With Twilight: New Moon
- The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw, nearly knocked off teen vamp flick Twilight: New Moon as the weekend’s top box office earner. New Moon pulled in $42.5 million, just a handful more than The Blind Side, which grossed $40 million. Both films are in their second week.
- The Hollywood Reporter on Crazy Heart, an upcoming film about a down-and-out, aging country singer:
“Had this film appeared later at Sundance, you would have the pleasure of discovering a fine performance by Jeff Bridges in an otherwise unremarkable movie. But with his best actor candidacy already announced, you start to notice his uncanny resemblance to Kris Kristofferson and speculate about how much this performance derives from Rip Torn’s still-memorable turn as a ruthlessly self-absorbed country singer in the 1973 film ‘Payday.’”
- Aaron Tippin is currently undertaking his “seventh or eighth” trip to perform for U.S. forces in Iraq.
- New York Daily News writer David Hinckley thinks Carrie Underwood’s song choice is getting bland:
“Since the industry realized a few years back that it would attract more baby-boom-era fans with safe rock-guitar riffs than with pedal steel, country writers and producers have developed a winning formula that, unfortunately, just doesn’t have much distinction.
Underwood is the perfect vehicle for this sound, since she comes out of the “American Idol” machine, which teaches presentation, packaging and the importance of servicing the mainstream.”
- Sugarland will perform with Jennifer Hudson on today’s broadcast of Oprah, while Tim McGraw will perform with Alecia Keys.
- The Las Vegas Sun reports that booking agents have had trouble bringing high-profile country acts in to Sin City for this year’s National Finals Rodeo:
“A lot of the big country acts have priced themselves out of the business,” said the agent, who asked not to be named. “These guys come in, two or three at a time, with million-dollar budgets, and the resorts can’t afford them.”
- Country Universe has kicked off it’s list of the top 100 Album of the Decade. The 9513 will begin its countdown in the coming days.

I’m glad “The Blind Side” is having an amazing run. Making more money in its second weekend over opening weekend is rare, which means word of mouth for this movie was very good. It will no doubt be on its way to passing 200 million if it keeps at this pace. Even though “New Moon” had a very steep drop, which was expected, it shouldn’t have a problem crossing the 300 million mark.

Looking forward to both those Top 100 lists.

The article lays most of its blame on country music in general and is quick to point out Underwood’s talent. I wonder why that wasn’t pointed out… oh wait, this is the9513. Nevermind.
For those of you who find Underwood uninteresting, check out her special. You’ll be in for a surprise.

Considering multiple women in my family (not me) have seen New Moon at least three times, the McGraw film number is even more impressive.

Leeann,
Sandra Bullock even took a smaller salary for a ‘back end’ percentage of the film’s gross profits. Looks like she will likely make more from that than a salary would’ve given her…

The Blind Side proves that a good story can still makes money.

Matt B. said: “Sandra Bullock even took a smaller salary for a ‘back end’ percentage of the film’s gross profits.” That also explains why she hired Timbo rather than a real actor to keep the production budget down on the project and to appeal to AirHead Country fans all in one fell swoop! She could have saved even more by casting her hubby Jesse James for the role! Ummm, maybe not…
I’m confused by anyone saying that Carrie Underwood’s song choices are “getting” bland. Hello?
Its fortunate for those attending the big Vegas Rodeo that they will get to see true talents like Sunny Sweeney perform rather than the Top 40 “hack-acts” who have priced themselves out of that market. I just wish those concerts were happening in Los Angeles rather than Vegas. Oh well.

that carrie underwood article was the biggest horsedump ever.what do they want her to sing, completely something out of left field just so they can say oh how “artsy”, but completely ignore her fans? taylor swift, just because she did not get out of american idol, gets a get out of jail free card with her pop country sounds, singing the same fairy tale themed love songs every time?
and i find it offensive that he called temporary home ingenuous, considering she wrote it and is religious.

Rick – Sunny Sweeney is a musical mess. Her voice is horrid and her song choices worse. Well, the songs really aren’t worse than the voice, but close.
She is probably the most untalented individual of note in Americana. Why would you use her as an example? She is a huge mess.

We still hope that Carrie Underwood will save her hometown movie theater

How about singing something country for a change?

I think Sunny is great. She sure beats anything from Nashvile.

Razor X: If you want to hear someone singing country for a change, you better not forget to turn on the t.v. tonight. On CMT, 9/8 Central, there is an Invitation Only performance from someone you may not have heard of. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

sunny sweeney is a mess. a big, hot, lovable, tawngy mess. the fact that her debut was a demo released untouched speaks to her talent. hopefully nashvegas will not bleach her east texas roots.

a tawngy mess?? LOL! you meant twangy, right??? that’s the biggest compliment i’ve ever heard!! THANK YOU!!!! and NO ONE can do anything to these roots… my hair girl has tried…. LOL!!!!!!!

Sunny Sweeney is one of the few rays of sunshine amidst a rather bleak array of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift wannabees. (I actually like Carrie and can tolerate Taylor, but most of the wannabees stink
Sunny Sweeney, Miss Leslie, Amber Digby, and very few others are the real deal

Everybody knows the 9513 is the biggest anti-Carrie people around with the constant negatives. Carrie is the best female vocalist today and her new album is amazing. It has already sold about 650,000 in a month. I guess the Boot is smarter than all the fans. I know you guys try to be different to get attention but it is really getting quite ridiculous!

I don’t know that. In fact, I seem to recall that her latest album received a favorable review here:

I saw “The Blind Side” last night. One of the greatest sports movies that I’ve ever seen, quite honestly. Tim McGraw is actually a pretty good actor.
