Help Lonestar Beer Pick A New Unofficial “National Anthem of Texas”
- Out of all the songs he’s written, the music he’s made, and the few movies he’s performed in Lyle Lovett says his greatest joy and accomplishment is rescuing the land that his family sold to developers in the ’80s.
- Two police officers have been fired and may spend up to a year in jail after they stole 21 straw hats from a vendor outside of a Kenny Chesney concert sometime last month.
- PopMatters brings us the following album reviews:
- Waylon Jennings and the Waymore Blues Band – Never Say Die
“It only does a disservice to this legacy to proclaim Never Say Die as some kind of Holy Grail that it isn’t. Yet it is a fine performance by a musician who should and will be remembered as a legend.” - Alan Jackson – 16 Biggest Hits
“The only potential gripe regarding 16 Biggest Hits–and, obviously, this is the case with any best-of compilation–is the exclusions.” - Porter Wagoner – Wagonmaster
“Marty Stuart, Wagonmaster’s producer, keeps the sound slick and accommodating without pandering to the airbrushed finish of contemporary Nashvegas.”
- Waylon Jennings and the Waymore Blues Band – Never Say Die
- Also from PopMatters is “Country’s Top 100: All-Time Best Songs.”
We kept this list, in the words of Strait, pure country: No Wilco. No Flying Burrito Brothers. No Old 97’s. No alt-country–there’s a time and place for honoring those heroes, and this ain’t it.
They’ve yet to release the Top 20, but so far the list has a nice mix of songs from all different eras of country. (via Twang Nation)
- Lonestar Beer is holding a contest to select a new unofficial “National Anthem of Texas.” They’ve got a list of 50 songs and after you vote you’ll get a free download. There’s so many great ones I’d be hard pressed to choose just one.
- While working on the title track to his gospel album Billy Joe Shaver says he had a visitation from Johnny Cash.
At 3:30 a.m., Shaver was asleep in a motel room in Hendersonville, Tenn., when he was awakened by what he calls a visitation from Cash, a strong feeling that he was there with him.
“He told me to get my ass out of bed, to finish this song,” Shaver recalled. “I had been writing on that song for about a year, and I had to change it all, throw it all away.
- Reba McEntire and Ronnie Dunn wrote “Does the Wind Still Blow in Oklahoma” via email.
- Kevin Fowler is lighting up the Texas charts. From a press release we received yesterday:
Kevin Fowler made Texas Music Chart history this week with his new single, “Long Line of Losers,” which vaulted to #1 in just six weeks. That makes the song the fastest-growing Top 50 chart entry in the chart’s history.
I’ve linked to it before, but check out the song on his MySpace and let me know what you think. I can see its appeal, but I’m not a huge fan of the single. My particular beef is with the line “half outlaw, half boozer.”

Having loudly and enthusiastically sung along with the Kevin Fowler song just the other day, I must demur.

I’ve sang along with it as well, I just take exception to that particular line because it seems to me that the picturesque outlaw is also a boozer.

Fowler goes for listener/crowd response more than just about any other artist I can think of. His singles tend to be formulaic and unremarkable, and “Long Line of Losers” is no exception. But so long as they can entertain and elicit a “yee-haw,” they seem to do the trick. And I guess there’s really nothing wrong with that.
I have a couple copies of his new CD, so shoot me an email if you don’t have it yet and I’ll drop one in the mail.

I guess so. I mean, it’s not like having an umbrella on your face.

Uh, I think you mean a red umbrella, which, apparently, is better than a regular umbrella.

Patrick – I got that impression when I saw him live. A lot of his antics rubbed me the wrong way, but everyone else seemed to eat it up. To each his own.
Chris – Yea, I guess it sounds pretty genius next to that one.

I enjoy Fowler’s new stuff. He is a little “yee-haw”ish/gimmicky, but I’ve enjoyed his more serious stuff like “Hard Man To Love”.
Still, he has been consistent and you know what to expect.
I haven’t seen him live, but if he ever tours outside of Texas I’ll try to.
