Heidi Newfield Giveaway: What Am I Waiting For?

After ten years as the lead singer of Trick Pony, Heidi Newfield followed her calling to a solo career and teamed up with famed producer Tony Brown to create What Am I Waiting For?, a remarkable solo debut album that critics have lauded as a mature project that showcases Newfield’s artistic evolution:
“The studio marriage of Heidi Newfield and producer Tony Brown is a match made in heaven.”
–Billboard Magazine
“A Lucinda Williams cover, cuts by George Strait favorite Dean Dillon and evocative Music Row outsider Lori McKenna and numerous co-writes by Newfield, who’s no mean songstress herself, all in the hands of veteran producer Tony Brown, set a commendably high standard, even if What Am I Waiting For doesn’t quite live up to its lofty aspirations.”
–The 9513
“What Am I Waiting For captures the essence of traditional country females such as Tammy Wynette, making for a refreshing oasis in a landscape of polished, pristine pop-country music. Unlike the images churned out on Music Row, life isn’t always airbrushed and pretty, and Newfield’s music is about accepting life, and her past, without resignation, but with responsibility and hope.”
–The Tennessean
“A startlingly sensitive, fully rounded album that reveals heretofore unheard dimensions in both [Heidi's] personality and her talent.”
–Country Weekly
“There isn’t a lot of mainstream country music made these days that seems to speak for, and to, actual adults. Heidi Newfield’s first solo album attempts to fill that void, and she has crafted an album that could only have been made by a woman who has a lot of living behind her, but still quite a bit to go.”
–Country Universe
“Newfield is far from a one-trick pony, making one of the year’s best country albums.”
–People Magazine

Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.
George Ducas - “Walk Through This World” Ducas banks on the success of recent artists’ pleasantly bland lyrics and agreeable instrumentation for his first release with WhiteStar Nashville.

Ronnie Dunn - but can we consider him a solo act anyway because Kix never sings songs that get played on the radio????
August 14, 2008 at 2:26 pm Permalink
I dont know about one I’d like to see go solo, but I know one I’d like to see go “un-solo” and that is Randy Owen. The few times I’ve heard him recently without his Alabama cohorts, he’s sounded AWFUL. (Admittedly I havent heard a lot, but what I’ve heard is bad.)

I’m a very big Sugarland fan. I’m curious as to what Jennifer Nettles would do as a solo act though. Would she stay mainstream country or would she go back to her blues/americana roots? She could even venture into a new arena. Whatever path she chose to take, I’m sure it would be big!

godley and creme. either one could go solo and i’d be happy.
do i win?

wait!! ally and aj!!

Hmm, that’s a hard one, but I’d love to have this CD. I’ll go with Ronnie Dunn also. Not original, but I do love his voice and I think he could do some awesome solo songs.
August 14, 2008 at 3:10 pm Permalink
I’ve heard a song by Abby Abbondanza from the Povertyneck Hillbillies and I hope he’s able to breakthrough to mainstream where the group couldn’t.
August 14, 2008 at 3:30 pm Permalink
Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, she has an amazing voice. I heard a while ago she was going to, but nothing has come of it yet, so I hope she hurries up.
Lots of giveaways this week, and they’re both albums I want to get anyway, so I hope I win one. xD

I would like to see what differences musically Ronnie Dunn would have in a solo album then the music on a B & D album
August 14, 2008 at 4:13 pm Permalink
I never really thought Alabama sounded much like a vocal group. To me, Owen could have had any other back up singers and sound virtually the same. I never heard anything uniquely group like from them, like with Diamond Rio or the Statler Brothers. So, to me Owen pretty much sounds as he did when he was with Alabama, though his song choices haven’t been as good.
I second Sara Watkins. I love her voice and keep looking for that album they keep talking about.
Note: I just wanted to comment, I don’t need to be entered into this drawing.

I kinda of hate having to pick someone to go slow since I am such a big fan of country groups. But I find that when ever Ronnie Dunn does a duet without Brooks I love it and want more. So I would vote for Dunn as well.

I’d pick Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town just because she’s um, well HOT! (lol) I’d like to be able to see her on stage or in pictures without all those other distracting people around her…..
My second choice would be Lillie Mae of Jypsi to hear what she’d sound like apart from the family band.
Heidi Newfield may not have the prettiest face in Nashville, but she more than makes up for it by distracting us guys with her bosom…..
August 14, 2008 at 5:10 pm Permalink
I think all the members of Little Big Town should release solo albums at the same time, like KISS.
August 14, 2008 at 6:13 pm Permalink
I would like for Kassidy Osborne from SHeDAISY to do a solo album. I love the subtleties in her voice, and although she sounds great with her sisters, i think she could shine on her own as well.
August 14, 2008 at 7:00 pm Permalink
This is something I don’t expect to see happen, but I’ve always thought that Emerson Drive’s Brad Mates could have a good solo career.
August 14, 2008 at 8:50 pm Permalink
I wonder what would Natalie Maines do without Emily and Martie?
August 14, 2008 at 8:51 pm Permalink
Natalie would rock on!
August 14, 2008 at 9:51 pm Permalink
I’d probably say Ronnie Dunn too, but just to be different I’ll say Brett of the Warren Brothers.
August 14, 2008 at 10:35 pm Permalink
Hmm. Tough one. I *would* say Ronnie Dunn, but nowadays, Kix is sooooo far in the background that you can’t even hear him anymore, so Ronnie’s essentially a solo act anyway. Plus, Kix has that radio gig…
Seriously, though, I’d say any of the following.
*Jeff Cook and/or Teddy Gentry of Alabama. I’ve heard these guys on album cuts from various Alabama albums, and they both sound just as good as Randy Owen. They’re fairly original in their delivery, and would sound great without restraining themselves to the Alabama formulae.
*Jimmy Yeary of Shenandoah. You know, that guy who took over for Curtis Wright, who took over for Brent Lamb, who took over for Marty Raybon. Jimmy sounds so much like Raybon that it’s scary, and I’d be interested to see what kind of material he’d tackle; country gospel like Marty, or something else? (I wonder why there’s virtually no mention online of Jimmy being their lead vocalist now? I wouldn’t even have known that he had taken over, had I not seen them in concert a month ago.)
*Keith Burns and/or Ira Dean from Trick Pony. Whichever of them sang lead on “Just What I Do” really made for a different sound that I thought was pretty dang cool.

I am gonna go with Kix Brooks is voice is like heart lotion for me.
August 14, 2008 at 11:15 pm Permalink
Correction: his voice is like heart lotion.
August 15, 2008 at 7:01 am Permalink
I also have to say Ronnie Dunn. Kix makes little contribution to B&D, so what’s the point in keeping him around?
August 15, 2008 at 7:54 am Permalink
Guy Forsythe. Oh, too late.
How about Sons and Daughter’s Adele Bethel.
August 15, 2008 at 9:31 am Permalink
Its already been said, but I’d go with Ronnie Dunn.
As for those in the past, I think Wynonna going from a duo to on her own has been one of the greatest transformations. She was able to tackle different styles of music solo and was much more limited in the Judds (even though I still love their stuff).
August 15, 2008 at 9:38 am Permalink
How do you get the lotion onto your heart?
August 15, 2008 at 10:06 am Permalink
jake owen might have some useful experience there.
August 15, 2008 at 10:06 am Permalink
Isn’t it interesting how Wynonna’s voice changed from the Judds to her solo stuff? There were hints of it in a few of the Judds songs (”Why Not Me”), but the soulfulness of it didn’t really fully emerge until she was on her own.
August 15, 2008 at 11:28 am Permalink
I’m gonna go with Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland.
August 15, 2008 at 11:57 am Permalink
Leeann,
That’s probably because Naomi wouldn’t allow it then.
August 15, 2008 at 1:10 pm Permalink
Charles Kelly of Lady Antebellum.
August 15, 2008 at 1:49 pm Permalink
Matt B. Is it just me, or has Wy’s voice dropped, like, an octave since she left The Judds? Go back and listen to “Attitude”, she sounds like a guy. Even on stuff like “Heaven Help My Heart” she sounds noticeably huskier and deeper. (It could be because *she’s* gotten huskier, but I digress.)
August 15, 2008 at 3:54 pm Permalink
I’d love to see Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town establish a solo career. She is so talented and I would love to hear that great voice of her’s stand alone without the sometimes superfluous and unncessary harmonies of the rest of Little Big Town.
August 15, 2008 at 11:53 pm Permalink
Troy Gentry, as I think his songs are by and large more interesting in MG and I’d like to see what he can do on his own.
August 16, 2008 at 2:32 pm Permalink
I’m going with Linda Davis’ daughter, Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum. I love her voice, but L.A’s album dissapointed me, because we didn’t hear enough of her beaustiful voice, and the songs were so-so.
August 16, 2008 at 7:42 pm Permalink
Hillary Scott and Charles Kelly of Lady Antebellum. I love them both. I think Hillary’s voice is so simple and pretty. Charles Kelly just sounds cool.
Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek would be interesting too.
I just wanted to say that, don’t enter me.
August 17, 2008 at 3:17 pm Permalink
I would have to second Courtney’s idea and say that I would love to hear a solo Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek) album. “Reasons Why” is one of my all-time favorite songs. Such a haunting vocal performance from Sara. I vote for her.
Kassidy Osborne and Jennifer Nettles would be interesting, but honestly, Sugarland is basically the Jennifer Nettles band, and SHeDAISY is more or less a Kassidy Osborne act with two very good background singers. I don’t see either ladies producing an album that would stray too far from their past projects.
On a side note, I would say that one of the most disappointing solo projects from a former band member would be Amanda Wilkinsons’ Universal South album. I was a huge fan of the Wilkinsons during their popular years, but the long-awaited solo album from Amanda was extremely cookie-cutter and bland. Aside from “Pontiacs” and “Gone From Love Too Long”, the album was a real dud.
August 17, 2008 at 4:21 pm Permalink
Stephen, that’s one I hadnt though of, but a very good one, I agree. Troy Gentry.
August 17, 2008 at 5:26 pm Permalink
I already posted but I wanted to comment:
Also, Kassidy Osborne would be nothing without Kristyn, who has written or co-written all but one of Shedaisy’s songs, so I think Kassidy would be worse by herself.
Also “Reasons Why” is another one of my all time favorites as well. “Beauty and the Mess” and “Should’ve Known Better” are two other amazing performances by Sara.
August 17, 2008 at 5:38 pm Permalink
I may have already said this, but if so, I agree about Sara Watkins!
As for Troy Gentry, I think his voice is technically better, but I find Eddie’s voice to be much more interesting than Troy’s.
August 17, 2008 at 5:41 pm Permalink
Yeah you seconded me after I posted it here a few days ago. xD
But that’s how good she is! She deserves to mentioned many times!
August 17, 2008 at 6:00 pm Permalink
Well. I still feel the same way. It hasn’t changed in the last day.:)
August 17, 2008 at 9:25 pm Permalink
I’ll put in another vote for Ronnie Dunn.
August 17, 2008 at 11:02 pm Permalink
I’d also love to see Sara Watkins from Nickel Creek create something by herself. (or with me!).
