Hayes Carll Releases Lost Highway Debut, Trouble In Mind
- Andrew Dansby of The Houston Chronicle sat down with Hayes Carll behind the Continental Club to “get some fresh air and smoke some cigarettes,” while he talked to the witty singer-songwriter about life, heroes, and his new album, Trouble In Mind.
“A lot of the songs on this album are about specific memories,” he says. “Living on the beach, capturing those places in time, those moments. You move from this place or that place and you lose track of how close you might’ve been to a person.
“So I’m trying to capture that moment. That person. That place. That’s what this record is to me.”
- Emmylou Harris plans to release All I Intended to Be — her first album of new material in almost five years — on June 10.
- Drew Kennedy has been writing a bunch of new material and hopes to be in the studio this winter to record album number tres.
- The next big hit for Trisha Yearwood isn’t anything like “She’s In Love With the Boy,” but more along the lines of Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen and her father’s Brunswick stew recipe. The cookbook was written with her mother and sister, Garth Brooks penned the forward, and the whole thing is dedicated to her father who passed away in September 2005.
- Taylor Swift’s collaboration with pop singer Colbie Caillat on her new album is like, uh, supposed to be really cool.
- Don’t expect a pain drenched break-up song from Carrie Underwood’s severed relationship with Chace Crawford. “We broke up over text so … it’s like ‘peace out,’” says Underwood.
- Blake Shelton released a new video for his cover of “Home.”
- The Gruene with Envy Awards were held last Sunday at Hill’s Cafe in Austin, TX and with the exception of Sunny Sweeney (Newcomer of the Year), the winners turned out to be the usual suspects. That wouldn’t be such a bad thing if there weren’t more deserving winners, but in the current format the awards seem to be nothing more than a popularity contest and in some instances with no real emphasis on quality.
- James Otto recorded “The Braves Play Here,” a song to help promote the Atlanta Braves, and he released his new Sunset Man album today.
- Emily West is excited about her first date with Mr. Opry.
- In the second part of Legacy’s Willie Nelson podcast series Willie talks about some of the early songs he wrote for Ray Price and Faron Young and the beginning stages of the outlaw movement.

For the second episode of The 9513 Country Music Podcast, your host Kelly Dearmore caught up with two seemingly different artists in Sarah Borges and Trent Willmon. Take a listen.
Free Music Downloads: If you’ve only recently come to country music, or have never delved past the genre’s surface and it’s most famous names, you may not have heard of Tom Russell. That’s a shame, and The 9513’s Free Music series is here to help set you down the right path.
Martina McBride - “Ride” Catchy, but a little low on cogency–not to mention originality. And it essentially resolves into the same kind of positive “message song” that has defined so much of McBride’s recent work.
Richie McDonald - “How Do I Just Stop” So gloriously simple and unequivocally lackluster that people of every political persuasion should rejoice in the opportunity to come together and have a hearty laugh at its expense.
Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You” Combinining a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—"If I Didn't Love You" pulls together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.
Lance Miller - “Bacon Frying” A charming country song that is beautiful for its simplicity, a musical remnant from a time when songwriters understood that often the best thing to do is just get out of the song’s way.
John Rich - “Another You” For a guy who is supposed to be a genius songwriter, John Rich sure does seem to be running out of ideas.
George Ducas - “Walk Through This World” Ducas banks on the success of recent artists’ pleasantly bland lyrics and agreeable instrumentation for his first release with WhiteStar Nashville.
In this exclusive interview for The 9513, Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook talks about life with the band, as well as A Place to Land, the group’s current album, which has charted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart on two separate occasions

Yeah, the GWE awards a joke. I guess if they just give in and not act like it should be awarded for that years releases or bands who actually did something new, then fine. Randy Rogers Band is great, but they didnt offer anything in 2007 in the way of a new album, same with Stoney. It’s this type of thing that illustrates my point on how “red dirt” is becoming very mainstream and mirroring the top 40 nashville scene. Sunny Sweeney getting that award isnt that great because her album has been out for a couple of years, so the “newcomer award” doesnt suit her really either….When the albums from Bingham, Edmondson and O’Toole are overlooked for albums/artists that are the same old thing is sad and very indicative of where this is all heading…

Dave - It is pretty exciting, and I like that she’s going to have “Old Five and Dimers” on there.
Kelly - They’re just begging for The 9513 to start their own awards ;) The thing that made me chuckle the most about the winners was Record of the Year. Kevin Fowler with Bring It On, seriously?

I’m just glad to hear that Sunny Sweeney is winning any kind of award! I just wish Scott Borchetta would put her out on some kind on national tour (say with Elizabeth Cook and The Wrights)….
I think the actual term Taylor Swift used to describe her duet with Colbie Caillat was “awesome”..
I’m becoming more convinced every day that Carrie Underwood is in fact an advanced cybernetic humanoid along the lines of Cameron in the “Sarah Connor Chronicles” TV series on Fox…..
And lastly, from CMT.com this exciting news blurb!
“New country artists Lady Antebellum and Ashton Shepherd will take part in the Good Morning America spring concert series on April 21 in New York City.”
I might actually have to set the DVR for that one…

Brody, Fowler winning for “Bring it on” is a joke! Beating the albums I mentioned earlier, along with the great discs from Adam Hood and Drew Kennedy and Walt Wilkins shows the narrow scope that is clearly being used. I actually like Kevin Fowler, but this current album is a retread with a bit of polish applied, nothing more.

The 9513 Awards?
“And the winner is…. Dale Watson!”
“Which Award?
“All of them!”
Sorry guys, couldn’t resist :)
April 8, 2008 at 12:48 pm Permalink
Well we’ve already named Dale Watson “Emperor” so anythings possible….
The GWE awards were fan voted, so it was indeed a popularity contest.
Taylor Swift is making me nervous.

I prefer Taylor Swift to Dale Watson. There, I said it.

@Kelly: What can I say? Some days you just feel like starting a fight — and around here it ain’t that hard to do.

Rick - I just became your biggest fan, someone besides me that thinks that about Carrie Underwood….
I can really start a fight —– I dont even know who Dale Watson is — I had to google him….hey I live in Ohio….

I am also glad to see that someone is giving Miss Sweeney some recognition. Her calendar is unbelievable. Someone must like her even if her label is a little slow to notice. In addition to being very talented, she is just so darn nice!

Rick, if that is true of Ms. Underwood, where do I place my order? :)

I’ll take one of those as well, please.
