Guilty Women’s Amy Farris Found Dead; Nashville at Nite Returns; New 1100 Springs Music on the Horizon;
- Austin native and fiddler Amy Farris, who was part of the group The Guilty Women that played with Dave Alvin, was found dead at her residence in Los Angeles at the age of 40. Suicide is suspected, although an investigation is still underway.
- Alt-512 Music Musings posted audio of Corb Lund’s CD-release show at Threadgill’s on Tuesday. Doug Moreland, who hosted a Calf Fry last weekend, and Hayes Carll sat in the audience for the majority of the show, but both joined Lund on stage before the evening was over.
- A recent string of clues out of Blake Shelton’s camp have left some fans speculating that his next single will be a duet with Trace Adkins titled “Hillbilly Bone.” If it’s true, let’s hope Capitol Nashville approved this one.
- Eleven Hundred Springs has a new record, titled This Crazy Life, due out in February.
- For episode 24 and the new season of Nashville at Nite, host Carrie Smith caught up with Heidi Newfield, Joey + Rory, and Craig Wiseman.
- Country California facetiously reports that fans of Carrie Underwood formally declared war on Poland after a man who sounded Polish got up and walked out of Underwood’s concert halfway through the opening song.
“The gall of that Polish man is just unbelievable! Just unbelievable! Taylor Swift doesn’t even sing very well and, unlike Carrie, she remixes her songs for pop radio!” blubbered fan Patsy Showalter, who could not explain how her comments on Swift were in any way relevant to the matter at hand.
- Vince Gill will receive the 2009 Spirit of Will Rogers Award on Nov. 8.
- Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers, Joe Diffie, and Kathy Mattea are among the artists scheduled to help the Opry celebrate its 84th birthday on Oct. 9 and 10.
- Austin Music Source’s Michael Corcoran on the new Robert Earl Keen record:
Robert Earl Keen is best known for his story songs and witty lyrical lines, but his first studio album in four years is most noteworthy for its groove. Danny Barnes’ banjo tangles with Rich Brotherton’s mandolin throughout, but this album is closer to Island-scented rock n’ roll than mountain music. [...] “The Rose Hotel”, which came out yesterday, is not about the lyrics as much as it’s a testament to the pleasant power of rhythmic cohesion. Keen’s superb band is really cooking on this one.
- Patrick Caldwell has a short Q&A with Sara Watkins for Austin Music Source to preface her performance at Austin City Limits this weekend.
- Nashville singer, songwriter, actor, and voiceover artist Michael Dean “Rick” Finney passed away on Tuesday at the age of 63. Finney co-wrote the George Jones and Johnny Paycheck duet “When You’re Ugly Like Us (You Just Naturally Got to Be Cool),” appeared in two of the “Ernest” movies, and could be heard in the Pace Picante Salsa commercials.
- Craig Shelburne relayed the inspiration behind the George Jones hit “A Good Year for the Roses” as told by songwriter Jerry Chesnut during an interview at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
- Listen to Todd Snider’s 10th appearance on Mountain Stage.
- Jim Fusilli profiled Lucinda Wiliams‘ career from the ’70s to present day in a new article for The Wall Street Journal.
Much of her ‘98 breakthrough album, “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” (Island), was recorded twice. During the sessions, she heard Steve Earle’s “El Corazón,” liked it and said she wanted her music to embrace its harsher sound. When her producer, Gurf Morlix, declined, she brought in Mr. Earle to take over. She told me that Mr. Morlix, a gifted multi-instrumentalist, hasn’t spoken to her since.
- Holly Williams, Luke Bryan, and Jimmy Wayne are on the recently released list of Nashville’s 25 most beautiful people.
- Farce the Music posted a couple of .99 reviews; one for Kingbilly’s “Waiting On You” and the other for Tim McGraw’s “Southern Voice.”
- For his Throwback Thursday feature, Sounds Country’s Jeff Giddens says the 1975 Jerry Jeff Walker album Ridin’ High might be the best representation of his freewheeling style.

I’m really sorry to hear about Amy Farris’ death. She was part of the close-knit L.A. Country Scene family and will be missed around these parts.
Gosh, sure would be neat if Corb Lund toured the US with Hayes Carll! What a killer double bill that would be.
Lucinda Williams profiled in the WSJ? Golly, the Americana music scene may indeed be on the upswing! Cool!
Opry Alert! Tonight’s “Classic Country” Opry has the theme “The Perfect Country & Western Song” and will feature Ray Price, T.G. Sheppard, Chris Young, Chris Scruggs, Rebecca Lynn Howard, and more! I wonder if someone will sing “You Never Even Call Me By My Name”? Hmm…

Carrie news from TV Guide:
Director, producer and choreographer Adam Shankman just might be earning the title of the hardest working man in showbiz. He’s currently dancing nimbly between a busy movie career, a now-permanent slot as a judge for So You Think You Can Dance?, and his latest project: a planned variety show pilot starring Carrie Underwood.
“I’m co-directing and producing a variety special starring Carrie Underwood for Fox with Nigel Lythgoe,” Shankman told TVGuideMagazine.com at the “Rock A Little, Feed A Lot” Benefit Concert for Feeding America, which the seemingly tireless helmer also produced and directed. The show is currently “just a pilot” at the moment, he said, but it may become something more regular.
“I think they want to do something along the lines of The Mandrel Sisters,’ Shankman said, recalling the 80s-era variety show headlined by country star Barbara Mandrel and her siblings. “They want to bring back the variety show and Carrie’s gorgeous and talented and fabulous.”

Yep…the quote by the Carrie Underwood fan says it all. Country Music has turned into one big joke and popularity contest between Carrie and Taylor fans (what was the point of even mentioning Taylor I ask?…yet I see quotes like this from Carrie and Taylor fans all the time)…and it’s hurting the credibility of the genre and the chances to succeed for other aspiring female artists who have way more to offer artistically and musically to the genre than those two have or probably ever will. Just my opinion of course.

Great Texasvet…I remember “The Mandrel Sisters” show. Dolly Parton had one too just like it. Does Carrie have any sisters? LOL Just goes to show how little creativity there is in today’s Entertainment industry. They just recycle old ideas and call them new again.

She doesn’t have Louise and Irlene, but she can draft Kellie Pickler and Julianne Hough (but not Taylor Swift — the Carrie fans would boo her off the stage every week).

“Does Carrie have any sisters?”
Both of her sisters are school teachers.

although, those comments might not be that funny after all. Its pretty pathetic actually.

Sam G. mentioned the beautious Julianne Fluff, so here goes… Julianne took off the current season of “Dancing With The Stars” to ostensibly focus on her country music career. Umm, is anyone aware of any activities on her part these days that would support that theory? Her MySpace page currently lists exactly one future concert booking in Phoenix on November 1st. Julianne gains far more fans for her pop-country music dancing on TV than hanging around with Chuck Wicks. What is going on here? Hmmm…

“The co-writers of ‘Cowboy Casanova’ are Brett James (a Grammy winner for co-writing ‘Jesus Take the Wheel’) and producer Mike Elizondo, who has worked with Eminem, Fiona Apple and Pink, among others.”
That is quite a country pedigree. I wonder if after Mutt Lange decided to turn his wife into a country “star” that if every pop producer set his/her sights on country music.

The Carrie bashing on this site is childish and unprofessional. Grow up and leave Carrie alone already!
October 1, 2009 at 8:21 pm Permalink
While I fully admit to being childish, how can bashing Underwood be unprofessional if my profession is non-musical related? Granted, its a little like shooting fish in a barrel.
