Give Me Some Money: Eddie Money Gone Country
- Veteran rocker Eddie Money is going country. His first single, “Give Me Some Water,” from the forthcoming album The Other Side of Money is scheduled to be released this weekend and will feature backing vocals from Vince Gill. Money also plans to countrify his hits “Hard Life” and “Two Tickets to Paradise” for the album.
- Miley Cyrus has been been tapped to perform at the CMT Awards as well as co-host the event with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. The announcement is expected increase the demand for tickets.
- Alan McGee asks the question, “Was Townes Van Zandt better than Dylan?”
“…it would be difficult to find a more unflinching portrayal of American poverty than “Marie.” While many singers are credited with the ability to become the characters they depict, few could do so with this sensitivity. The song is like an urban update of Hank William’s Pictures from Life’s Other Side with the doomed protagonist staring into your eyes as he unfolds his wretched story.”
I think the comparison to Dylan should be tossed aside and just enjoy the article for its celebration of Van Zandt. Also check out the comment left by sourpus who says he’s seen both singers live several times and relays a story that captures the essence of a TVZ performance. (via Take Country Back)
- Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood are scheduled to be on hand at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on March 4th to announce the nominees for the ACM Awards. The actual awards ceremony will take place in Las Vegas on May 18.
- Plans are underway to make Alabama the newest home to a country music theme park. The project, called Country Crossing, will include hotels, restaurants and stores that have ties to country artists. George Jones will be one of the several anchor artists who will perform three to four times a year, and close to a dozen other Nashville artists have signed letters of intent.
- Holly Gleason says that based on how far Taylor Swift has come so far, just about anything seems possible.
- Phrases like “according to sources” and “insiders say” don’t exactly inspire a lot of confidence in the truth of an article, but based on those phrases Jessica Simpson is at risk of being dropped from her label because she’s placing Tony Romo ahead of her career. Apparently this has made Joe Galante furious and to top off all the outrageousness, “Romo and Simpson are allegedly ready to get married.” (via ggcolumn)
- If you think that’s bad journalism, Maxim magazine recently ran a negative review of the Black Crowes album…except the record label hadn’t yet sent out any advance copies of the music. Another instance in which music-news websites were duped involved a phony press release stating that the No Depression showcase at SXSW (featuring Bruce Robison among others) will require a strict dress-code and the hosting nightclub would give priority admission to those who ordered bottle service. ND’s Peter Blackstock wants to know where the real JOURNALISM is.
- I posted a link to a video of Willie Nelson’s “You Don’t Think I’m Funny Anymore” the other day, but here’s a higher quality version that wasn’t recorded from TV.
- PopMatter’s Steve Horowitz reviews Jim Lauderdale & The Dream Players’ Honey Songs. (8/10)
- Although 75 to 80 percent of his touring business is in Texas and his band resides in Austin, Trent Willmon remains based in Nashville, mostly because of his songwriting career.
“That’s what I’ve been doing for the last five years,” he says. “It is difficult because it’s two separate entities. There’s a cold war between Texas music and Nashville. We can skirt around that issue all day long but it’s true. Part of this Texas music revolution, this Texas music movement, is the rebellion [against] Nashville. That is what drives a lot of it.
- The Eye of the Hurricane blogger plans on hitting up a “Superfecta” of Ryan Bingham shows. Never heard of a Superfecta? “It’s named after the horse racing bet where you bet on the first 4 horses to cross the finish line. And as you might guess… the Superfecta, for us, means hitting 4 consecutive shows in 4 separate towns of the same artist.” For those who can’t make four shows in a row there’s the Trifecta.

Forgotten Artists: Bradley Kincaid In a manner similar to Alan Lomax, William Bradley “The Kentucky Mountain Boy” Kincaid was one of the great American musicologists and collectors of American folk, country and parlor songs.
Forgotten Artists: Goldie Hill Had Carl Smith and Goldie Hill been born 30 or 40 years later, they might have been like Faith Hill and Tim McGraw–the dominant married couple in country music.
Miranda Lambert - “More Like Her” This kind of material, as opposed to her tough-chick-done-wrong romps like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Gunpowder and Lead,” is where her real promise lies
Joey Rory - “Cheater, Cheater” It’s actually downright frivolous, but that just makes it all the more fun. And really, are you allowed to say “ho” on country radio?
Josh Gracin - “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” Despite initial marketing that touted the album as deep and personal, “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” is anything but deep or personal.
Josh Turner - "Everything Is Fine" Turner is the rare example of an artist who records material that’s both quality and trademark.
Darryl Worley - "Tequila On Ice" A groovy mid-tempo that sways, a refreshing reprieve from the exhausting pace of a format that clamors for loud music and swelling choruses.
Blake Shelton - "She Wouldn't Be Gone" It’s all about nailing the melody rather than providing a legitimate interpretation that accentuates the lyrical content, although Shelton does do a pretty good job of injecting what limited emotion he can.
Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.
News that former Sugarland member and co-founder Kristen Hall is suing her ex-mates, to the tune of $1.5 million, goes a long way towards providing a bit of context regarding the Atlanta singer/songwriter’s sudden departure from the group.
In Memory of Don Helms (1927 - 2008) Helms dated back to a time when an excellent four or five piece band and a good singer were all that were needed to make great country music. No drums, no light shows, no production tricks in the recording studio–just good music.

The Miley/Billy Ray duet on “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” is bad enough, but if Miley performs anything else, CMT Awards can drop any pretense of being a country music awards show

With the Cyrus family hosting, it does sound like they’re trying to boost attendance.
I can stand Billy Ray hosting but Miley, not so much.
