In Memory of Don Helms (1927 - 2008) Helms dated back to a time when an excellent four or five piece band and a good singer were all that were needed to make great country music. No drums, no light shows, no production tricks in the recording studio–just good music.
Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.
News that former Sugarland member and co-founder Kristen Hall is suing her ex-mates, to the tune of $1.5 million, goes a long way towards providing a bit of context regarding the Atlanta singer/songwriter’s sudden departure from the group.
Josh Gracin - “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” Despite initial marketing that touted the album as deep and personal, “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” is anything but deep or personal.
Josh Turner - "Everything Is Fine" Turner is the rare example of an artist who records material that’s both quality and trademark.
Darryl Worley - "Tequila On Ice" A groovy mid-tempo that sways, a refreshing reprieve from the exhausting pace of a format that clamors for loud music and swelling choruses.
Blake Shelton - "She Wouldn't Be Gone" It’s all about nailing the melody rather than providing a legitimate interpretation that accentuates the lyrical content, although Shelton does do a pretty good job of injecting what limited emotion he can.

Not THE Micheal Scott!

Sugarland will be announcing that Jennifer Nettles is leaving the duo to pursue a solo career in the rap business.
Kristian Bush plans to remain in the country music genre, but no longer wants to be associated with Sugarland since Nettles is leaving. He has decided to form a new duo that will deviate from the pop-ish music Sugarland has been known to record. In fact, Bush’s new duo partner is “so country” that fans will listen to their sound and be immediately reminded of the great “Big and Rich” duo that seemed to disband at the turn of the year.
Kristian Bush’s new duo partner? None other than Nashville Star’s Coffey, who, with a Southern background and fancy hat, is about as country as they come. John Rich suggested the combination to Bush, expressing the significance of increasing the racial diversity within the genre and the immediate success that can come with it.
The new duo will be named “Bushey” (pronounced Bush-ay) and will be touring with Kellie Pickler and Ashton Shepherd this fall.

Wow, that is so totally awesome and really cool about Taylor Swift with Def Leppard! This should definitely be a high point in the mainstream country scene in 2008…..
Isn’t Michael Scott lucky to have the same name as Steve Carell’s charcater in NBC’s “The Office”…
And speaking of names, Fisher Stevenson sounds like someone you’d meet at the country club for a quick nine holes. I’ll prefer a “Travis” type first name for a male country artist any day of the week….
I think its appropriate taht Jessica’s “Best Breasts” honor should come from something called “In Touch”…
OMG, A Sugarland announcement!!!!! The suspense is killing me!…..(lol) I think because of Kristian’s family connections they should give each person at their concerts a small can of the new line of Bush’s beans!

Hearing Jamey Johnson do a song first effectively ruins all future versions of it for me. It happened with “She’s All Lady” (Joe Nichols), “It Was Me” (George Strait), and now “Ray Ray’s Juke Joint,” all of which I first heard on The Dollar.

The Sugarland stuff sounds pretty ‘country’ to me.
July 2, 2008 at 10:35 am Permalink
John,
“Ray Ray’s Juke Joint” is one of the few songs Johnson’s recorded that wasn’t written by him. However, I see your point.

Maybe Sugarland will announce that Jennifer is engaged to Clayton, lol.

“John Rich suggested the combination to Bush, expressing the significance of increasing the racial diversity within the genre and the immediate success that can come with it.”
You forgot that John Rich will also, no doubt, be producing the album and debuting it on a reality show that he will produce and host chronically the “making of” Bush-ay.

Chris: Maybe they can get Scrantoicity II to open for him.

Matt B.,
“It Was Me” wasn’t written by him, either. I was just referring to his singing, not his songwriting. I think you got that, but just wanted to clarify.

The Sugarland announcement (I was curious, sue me) is that 5 copies of the band’s new CD (the deluxe edition, naturally) come with a special platinum ticket.
The people who find the winning tickets will be whisked off to tour Sugarland’s factory, where a troop of dancing orange midgets slave away night and day crafting Sugarland’s songs. Unlike Willy Wonka’s factory, there is no chocolate involved. Sugarland’s factory produces nothing but bubble gum.
Oh, and Kristian Bush wears an incredibly dorky hat in the video.

I may eat my words later, but I was a bit pleasantly surprised by the tracks I heard from the upcoming Sugarland album.

I like the sugarland clips, my favorites would be “We Run”, “Very Last Country Song”, “Keep You”, and “It Happens”. The song “Steve Earle” sounds weird to me, her voice sounds odd.
But it looks like Love on the Inside will be a very good album, in my opinion.
July 2, 2008 at 2:05 pm Permalink
I listened to the tracks a few weeks ago and all that I heard really sounded great to me. I am super excited about the CD. What Happens sounds like a fantastic fun song. Well, I heard them sing it in concert and I loved it immediately. I can’t remember which title went with what song but there were some slow, stripped down songs that sounded fantastic! Can’t wait to hear the whole CD.
July 2, 2008 at 2:28 pm Permalink
I think she may have been trying to immitate Steve Earle in that song? That’s all I can think of for the reason for the oddness of her vocals in the verses of it.
