George Jones and Stanley Brothers Songs Picked For National Recording Registry
- The Librarian of Congress has selected 25 culturally significant recordings to preserve in the National Recording Registry. George Jones‘ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and the Stanley Brothers‘ “Rank Stranger” are among those that were chosen for this year’s honor. GAC has more info about the two songs.
- Missing from yesterday’s new release list was Justin Moore’s new EP, The “You Asked For It” EP. (iTunes)
- Sarah Jarosz has a CD release party scheduled at the Cactus Cafe tonight for her album Song Up In Her Head.
- The Texas Music Matters song of the day is “Down To the Wire” from Son Volt’s upcoming album American Central Dust.
- The Drive-By Truckers plan to release two albums, a Live From Austin, TX CD and DVD on July 7 and The Fine Print (A Collection Of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008) on September 1, before ending their tenure with New West Records.
- Alan Jackson will celebrate two decades in the music business with a free show tonight at Cadillac Ranch.
- MusicRow and AristoWorks formed a new chart to track the popularity of country artists on Twitter. Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift hold down the top two spots. In fact, they have such a commanding lead that if you were to add the numbers from spots #3 to #77, they still wouldn’t equal either Cyrus’ or Swift’s numbers.
- Listen to samples of a handful of songs from Tanya Tucker’s new album, My Turn, on the Saguaro Road Records blog.
- Jim McBride tells the story behind “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow,” the first song he wrote with Alan Jackson and their first No. 1.

- Eric Church’s team took first place in the second annual Porter Wagoner Memorial Artists & Anglers Fishing Tournament yesterday followed by Jeff Cook of Alabama in second and Dean Brody in third.
- Listen to several songs from Hot Texas Burrito, the upcoming album from the Two High String Band. (via The Bluegrass Blog)
- Craig Shelburne created a summer playlist of new indie songs.
- John Anderson’s Bigger Hands and David Serby’s Honkytonk and Vine are a couple of the new album reviews from Country Weekly’s Chris Neal.
- In his review of The Excitement Plan for Paste, Steve LaBate describes Todd Snider as “a laidback Jon Stewart with an acoustic guitar, a sniper on the periphery of pop culture, sneaking deadly accurate shots at all the baffling pomp and mixed-up priorities in this crazy land.”
- Speaking of Snider, the A Truer Sound blogger re-posted what he calls the mother of all Todd bootlegs.
- Watch video of John Rich perform “Shuttin’ Detroit Down” during his interview on SIRIUS XM Radio. And for those who have had a chance to listen to the new John Anderson album, whose version of “Shuttin’ Detroit Down” do you like better?
- On the subject of songs with twists, My Kind of Country’s Occasional Hope asks: What songs have most surprised you the first time you realized what was really going on? And which are your favorite songs with a twist?

Caroline Herring likes to sing songs about life in the South. No, not exactly like Justin Moore and Jason Aldean...
The 9513's resident historian Paul W. Dennis sits down for a chat with country music legend Gene Watson.
As much as we love girl singers, we love songs about girl singers even more. Here's just a few of the many tribute songs out there.

That Todd Snider bootleg is a 5-disc behemoth, complete with artwork. Awesome. Enjoy it, Rick!
Two thoughts on the Twitter chart. #1: Miley Cyrus is country now? Shouldn’t country music listeners be allowed to vote on this or something before we just welcome her onto any kind of country chart? #2 Willie Nelson uses Twitter???????

If I had to choose, I’d say John Anderson’s version is better, but I’m still not really into the song in general. At least Anderson’s has a punch (that natural growl of his) that Rich’s loungy version lacks.

And I agree with Chris N’s assessment of the Anderson album. I like that it’s more traditional than Easy Money, but the song choices aren’t as compelling.

Yes, I too think its too early to consider her country when she’s still only had 1 country (soundtrack) song so far and is continuing to portray Hannah Montana : /

I don’t think anyone missed the Justin Moore EP….
Song that most surprised me when I realized what was going on: Bed of Roses–The Statler Brothers.
I heard that song again when I was 19, about 8 years or so since the last time I had heard it. “She found me outside one Sunday morning, taking money from a man I didn’t know.” Was there any kind of scandal when people heard the song about the prostitute and his call-girl girlfriend, or was it just assumed that The Statler Brothers must have ment something else?

Of course, the Sarah Jarosz show tonight is actually a *pre*-release party. The actual CD release party show – that is, on the day the CD is actually released – will be at the World Famous Station Inn in Nashville, Tennessee. For a preview go here: http://www.nashvillescene.com/events/sarah-jarosz-cd-release-249371/ .

The Jarosz album is quite good. Bill (William) likes it even better than I do.

There’s a difference between realizing what’s going on and inventing something.

As for Justin Moore, isn’t anyone excited about finally being able to purchase “I Could Kick Your Ass”? (lol)
Sam G., thanks for the tip! (lol) I actually posted my comment about Todd on the “Excitement Plan” review topic thread before coming to this topic. I guess you’ve got me pegged on that one.
As for Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift on Twitter, how much of their twittering pal fanbases (or whatever their “twit” subscribers are called) overlap? I’d say a lot of them as both have mass appeal to the same pre-tween through teenybopper girl demographic. And is the fact the Hannah Montana soundtrack album is tagged as “country” mean Miley gains instant status as a “country artist” after a lone single on country radio? Crikey…
Surprising songs: Well Henson Cargill’s 1968 hit “Skip a Rope” always surprises me that such a socially conscious song could be a hit on country radio back then. Also “Irma Jackson” being about inter-racial romance and yet one of Merle Haggard’s favorite compositions always surprises me. Lastly the way Max Baer (Jethro Bodine) interpreted “Ode To Billy Joe” for the movie was a total surprise, or maybe total shock would be a better word. Being based in Hollywood and the entertainment industry must have been a big influence! (lol)

Rick’s Random Tidbits: Over at “That Nashville Sound ” there is a feature on a new “Honky Grass” group of Hoosiers named “Huckleberry Blue”. (Question – Do huckleberries even grow in Indiana? I thought they were more of a Pacific Northwest / Rocky Mountain kind of berry. Hmm…) They sound like a talented and fun loving bar band from all of their MySpace songs, but they do rise above the masses on one particular track! For a bit of fun listen to the bonus track starting at 4:10 on “Underage Party Girl” (the last song on their player). A parental warning applies to this minute and a half long ditty! (lol)

(Head for the last track on the MySpace Music Player titled “Underage Party Girl (with Bonus Track)” and start at the 4:10 mark.)

I’m in Nashville right now. The line for Jakcson outside Cadillac Ranch started before 10 a.m. yesterday. Wristbands were to be handed out at 4:30 p.m. I was next door at the Brewhouse in the window and that line didn’t move an inch until at least 5:30. I cannot imagine waiting in line that long for anyone! Why waste an entire day of precious vacation for a ‘free’ ticket? Sure hope they enjoyed the concert. Did anyone go?
On another note, saw brief performances by Cherry Holmes, Emily West and Brody what’s-his-name. Excellent. Emily is very spunky. Loved her. Chuck Wickes hosted the Country Weekly Fashion Show at the Wildhorse. He was charming, witty and even did a dance from DWTS. This week is flying by.

Taylor and Miley may be the most popular on Twitter, but Blake Shelton is definitely the funniest.
