We haven’t made up our mind yet, and we’d love to have you help us decide. Hate it? Let us know that, too (though I hope with all of my being that you don’t!).

- Farce the Music targeted Bryan White, Carrie Underwood, Rodney Atkins, and more in October’s batch of parody album covers.
- Geoffrey Himes describes Robert Earl Keen as having two very different sides, with his latest disc striking a balance between the two:
On one hand, he has a gift for the kind of understated, skeptical, literary songwriting pursued by his mentors Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, and friend and neighbor Lyle Lovett. On the other, Keen has become a hero to Lone Star State fratboys who sing along lustily to Keen choruses celebrating guns, alcohol and squandered hours. As a result, some folks blame him for Pat Green.

- Justin Townes Earle and sideman Cory Younts parted ways.
- Carrie Underwood performed her new single, “Cowboy Casanova,” and four songs from her two previous albums for the latest Walmart Soudcheck.
- Tennessee Gov. I’m thinking “retirement” wasn’t the smartest word for Garth to have used regarding his extended break. When I think “retired”, I think “no longer doing the job.” In Garth’s case, I don’t think he ever intended to never be an artist again, just take a break for awhile. I think he would have avoided a lot of ribbing if he had just used a better word to describe it.
October 15, 2009 at 1:37 pm Permalink
I agree Leeanne. This sounds more like he’s just tired of people saying, “I thought you were retired.” every time he makes an appearance. I read that he’s still not “planning” on releasing new music or having a real tour for awhile.

Here’s a rundown of a few things Garth commented on earlier.
“To record an album, I know, living here, it took us six months to record an album. I can’t imagine what it would take not living here and coming back and forth. Again, somehow Strait does it with ease, which is something I can’t do. As far as a tour, you know me, man. If I can’t eat it, sleep it, breathe it, then it ain’t me. So I don’t see that happening.”
As far as that explanation goes, I like that outlook on creating music. The unionization talk later in the article is pretty absurd, though.

yes. Unions are always a good thing….

I wonder now that Garth is un-retired if he will pay a visit to the Opry for a long awaited return to that stage. I wish more of these artists would show the Opry some love. Like Alan Jackson, what has he been doing all year? I’m sure he had a space Tuesday/Friday/Satuday night he could have slipped over to the Opry house, in between running errands, sang a song or two, and made he back home by 9:15pm. Is that too much to ask for in this day in age? If you’re a member, earn it.
October 15, 2009 at 7:44 pm Permalink
From what I’ve heard and read, Garth has made it clear that he will do whatever the Opry asks him to do and that they have an open invitation to invite him to appear on it. For whatever reason, it just doesn’t seem that they’re taking him up on the offer all too much. He did say something about the Opry deserving more from him (or something like that)in his first press conference today.

One thing that puzzled me: Why would making a record necessarily involve six months of going back and forth to Nashville? Why doesn’t he build a home studio and just record there? I think he has the money.
October 16, 2009 at 9:54 am Permalink
I wondered the same thing, Chris. He wouldn’t be the first person not to record in Nashville.
October 16, 2009 at 10:32 am Permalink
There’d be a lot more headaches that way. At least in the short term.
October 16, 2009 at 12:24 pm Permalink
Because he has loyalty to certain musicians and his producer… I highly doubt he doesn’t have a home studio, he lives in a mansion and his place in Goodlettsville has a indoor basketball court.
October 16, 2009 at 3:52 pm Permalink
The Garth “one-man show” concept could be cool in Vegas. On the other hand, if it falters, he could ditch the one-man concept and slowly return to a full-band show with more energy; just not the Mega-Garth circus shows he was known for.
October 16, 2009 at 4:42 pm Permalink
Pretty sure the musicians and producer would come to him.
October 16, 2009 at 5:50 pm Permalink
“Pretty sure the musicians and producer would come to him.”
I wouldn’t be – I mean, I wouldn’t rule it out, but it’s not exactly a simple proposition, especially if you’re talking about taking 6 months to cut an album.

The thing that makes me agree with Jon on Garth is that it’s no secret that Garth is very intense/perfectionist, including when it comes to recording albums. So, I wonder if the logistics of bringing his favorite musicians to record in Oklahoma would just be too much trouble to outweigh the benefit for whoever bank rolls the project. Garth is likely very aware of his perfectionist tendencies and may not want to even go there.

Daughtry performing on the CMA’s is just what the awards show needs! Just like the VHI Hip Hop Honors needs George Strait to rap one of their hits for them. Taylor and Carrie wasn’t enough to promote the show and draw in viewers, we need a rock band to lure in views to country music’s biggest night.

Darn-it anyway, Garth Brooks tickets are $125. How the heck are we supposed to afford that?
October 17, 2009 at 9:43 am Permalink
Pardon me, $143 after tax and service charges. My gosh.
October 17, 2009 at 10:01 am Permalink
I reckon that Brooks has enough tucked away that bankrolling a project that involved importing folks to Oklahoma over – or even for – a 6 month period would be within the realm of possibility. And Allen Reynolds doesn’t appear to be too busy these days, so that probably wouldn’t be an issue. But studio guys are studio guys in large part because they like to sleep in their own beds. And their personal business models are built around availability; going away for an extended period of time, or even intermittently but frequently for the same, means foregoing a lot of other work and lowering their profiles. You can make up financially for the missing sessions by paying them more, but you can’t mitigate the negative impact on their long-term prospects; the producers move on down their call lists, and the player may never hear from them again – at least, that’s the fear that virtually every session player has virtually every time he turns down a job. And that’s the real problem that would have to be dealt with.

Funny how Vince Gill’s name is missing from the Daughtry huffing & puffing.
