Garth Brooks Sells Out Nine Shows; CMA Entertainer Category Causes Confusion; Stream New Bruce Robison/Kelly Willis Song
- When tickets for Garth Brooks flood benefit concert went on sale Saturday, they went quick. So quick, in fact, that show after show was added until virtually nine shows were sold out in three hours, raising more than $3.5 million.
- The presence of Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum, and Zac Brown Band in the CMA Awards entertainer of the year category has some folks scratching their head, including Lambert and Lady Antebellum, who think their nomination is premature. Reba McEntire is disappointed that more established artists weren’t nominated, Jason Aldean thinks the whole thing is rigged, and Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus still wants a better explanation of the criteria.
- Drew Kennedy and Josh Grider are participating in Movember this year, which is a movement to help raise awareness and money for prostrate cancer. To raise awareness, participants grow a mustache, or Mo’, throughout the month of November. Money is raised from donations, so take a look at their ‘staches, and I’m sure you’ll feel the urge to give.
- Country California: Quotable Country – 11/07/10 Edition
- If there’s anything to learn from Taylor Swift’s huge sales week, it’s that big-box stores still sell more than any other outlet. The Records’s Jacob Ganz listed four other lessons the recording industry can take away from the success of Speak Now, plus a breakdown of how much Swift herself earned, and what what one songwriter might have earned after a week had he/she had a single song on the album.
- Pierce Greenberg sent some info over on the upcoming album from The Grascals.
I spoke with Jamie Johnson from the Grascals and he gave me some interesting insight into their new album, The Grascals and Friends, which is due out in early January. It will be mostly classic country stuff and he was willing to divulge a few tracks: “Tiger By The Tail” w/ Brad Paisley, “Devil Went Down To Georgia” w/ Charlie Daniels, and “Folsom Prison Blues” w/ Dierks Bentley. The Oak Ridge Boys, Joe Nichols, Tom T. Hall, Dolly Parton, and Terri Clark, among others, will also be featured. This will be their first album sans Rounder.
- Good news for those who missed the George Strait/Reba McEntire/Lee Ann Womack tour this year: they’ve scheduled a bunch of dates for 2011.
- Rumor has it Shania Twain may be headed to Vegas.
- If it weren’t for the Beyonce song “If I Were A Boy,” Reba McEntire‘s new release (due out tomorrow) might have been a collection of holiday tunes instead of a new country studio album.
- LeAnn Rimes denied rumors that she’s engaged and took E! News to task for its “lack of reporting.”
When CNN is calling my publicist off of a lie E News has reported, the media world seriously has a problem with their lack of responsibility to the public to actually report the truth.
- Here’s a new song from Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis titled “Dreamin.” It’s scheduled to appear on Robison’s album You and Me later this month.
- Notable Taylor Swift co-writer Liz Rose opened her own publishing company.
- Too many jokes that work could spell disaster for the CMA Awards:
One thing we’ve learned is that we gotta build in the possibility that a joke will work,” Brad [Paisley] says. “Because that adds 10 seconds, and every time a joke works and adds 10 seconds, you could be a minute over.”
A lot of jokes worked in 2009. As a result, producers found the show was running about four minutes long by the time they’d completed two hours. Things were extremely tense in the control booth.
- Here’s the second-disc to Jamey Johnson‘s The Guitar Song in all of it’s full, streaming glory.
- Eleven songs from Taylor Swift‘s new record made appearances on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. The Beatles and David Cook are the only others to have accomplished a similar feat, but as Music Mix’s Simon Vozick-Levinson explains, Swift’s is more impressive.
- SHARK wants Montgomery Gentry‘s Academy of Country Music/The Home Depot Humanitarian Award rescinded.
- PBS Video posted a couple of recently aired episodes of Austin City Limits. Check out Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers / Sarah Jarosz and Robert Earl Keen / Hayes Carll. On the latter episode, The Eye of the Hurricane’s Ryan Hargrave really digs the new song “Hide Me” from Carll.
- Here’s Peter Cooper and Eric Brace performing “Suffer a Fool” for Music Fog.

Yea….worked the Garth Brooks onsale. Certainly the biggest one I’ve been involved with in the last 8 years.

I’ve seen Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum, and Zac Brown Band in concert. As a live act, Garth blows them all away. (Kudos to him for the relief concerts!) Zac Brown Band is a distant second. Lady A and Miranda both have a long way to go. I’ve seen them more than once and they disappointed live each time – they can sing, but they weren’t able to connect with the audience. Definitely premature. They should go check out Garth in concert if they want to see an “Entertainer.” (And no. I’m not a big Garth fan.)

“Rumor has it that Shania Twain is headed to Vegas.”
Now why am I not surprised by that and just in time too as she’ll probably join Garth there. Two egomaniacs in action here. Hooray for them both. And how long will it take the newest egomaniac Taylor Swift to jump to Vegas after her career dies out?

Can’t wait to get Reba’s new album! I’m really excited about it. =)

… still got some ego-problems, lewis?

Went over and listened to some samples of the Reba album- sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to pick it up.
Wish I could have gotten Garth tickets. I’ve wanted to see him live for almost 20 years. Maybe in Vegas…

I got a few tickets to garth, but would honestly rather see his Vegas show, just for something a little different.

It’s nice that Liz Rose’s association with Taylor Swift has allowed her to open her own publishing house! I just knew Taylor must be good for something. I wonder if Liz will sign her daughter Caitlin? Hmm…
Wow, the rumors about LeAnn Rimes being engaged and her reaction to the story both share my weekly “Who Really Gives A Sh*t(?) Award”! Way to go LeAnn for once again proving how self-absorbed you are!
The typical Taylor Swift purchasing demographic goes with their Mommy to the nearest big box store where Mommy pays for the CD. Target offering the Deluxe Version pulled a total coup with this one and in yesterday’s ad was offering it for $ 16.99!! Crikey!
That new Grascals album sounds like fun in concept. Now if they could just refrain from any spurious whoops and hollers it might be listenable! I think they should include the song “Long List Of Heartaches” with someone like Joe Nichols singing lead.

Like it or don’t, there’s nothing spurious about the Grascals’ whooping and hollering. It’s something that Jamie Johnson learned back when he was in the Boys From Indiana, who did it for 20 years.

Geesh Lewis, pull the burr out from under your saddle where Garth is concerned. The man just raised 3.5 million dollars for the victims of the floods; that’s not ego, that’s demand for a man who puts on a kick ass live show.

Re: Garth — also, let’s not forget this is a guy from Oklahoma, who’s giving back to a City that took him in when he was a young’n and gave him the career and the billions of dollars. As with Urban’s “All For The Hall”, I kinda dig when guys who aren’t “From There” still feel that sense of honour toward the City/Music that gave them a home, and want to give back.

Just to be clear, most country artists aren’t from here, and “All For The Hall” is an ongoing initiative of the Country Music Foundation that was started years ago and has involved hundreds of artists donating show proceeds for the Hall; the show Urban’s hosted has been one of the biggest, but it’s also one of many, like one the Grascals did back in 2005, or the recent Taylor Swift-Emmylou Harris-Kris Kristofferson show in L.A. (none of them are from Nashville, either).
