Free Music: Willie and The Wheel
The free music keeps on rolling here at The 9513 with Willie and the Wheel, the brand new collaboration between Willie Nelson and Western Swing icon Asleep at the Wheel.
Today you have a chance to win the album that earned The 9513’s first 5-star review of 2009.
“It’s a music lover’s dream. … not “as good as you’d expect a collaboration between Jerry Wexler, Willie Nelson, and Asleep at the Wheel that was 30 years in the making to be”–it’s better than you’d dare hope for one to be..” — Ben Cisneros
“Nelson sounds like an absolute natural in these environs, which is no surprise given the genre’s jazz roots and Nelson’s own improvisational sense of melody and, especially, phrasing. His swooping, weathered warble usually occupies the space just behind the beat; rarely will he sit right on it. That distinctive style works particularly well in the freewheeling settings of “Willie and the Wheel,” beginning with the opening “Hesitation Blues,” on which Nelson’s vocals dart over and around the shuffling rhythm as the instrumental lines drop in and out: hot fiddles, rollicking piano, feisty steel guitar.” — Josh Freedom duLac, Washington Post

Willie’s collaboration with Merle on “Pancho and Lefty” smokes ‘em all.

I admit that I wasn’t feeling very creative this morning…

I never thought much of Willie as a vocalist, but his collaboration with Deana Carter on “On The Road Again” is really good. Deana’s voice really compliments Willie’s,

I am still struggling to remember to not use “Rainbow” anymore. If any of you moderators would like to edit my post, I’d be happy.

Nothing beats his rap on Lil Black’s version of “On the Road Again.” That is some surreal stuff right there.

I like Willie’s duet with Jimmie Dale Gilmore for “Crazy” on the “Red Hot & Country” release. Two very odd voices working well together.

Willie’s duet with Hank Snow on “Brand On My Heart”

Seven Spanish Angels with Ray Charles — is my favorite — I love some of his with the Highwaymen – but every time I hear this song I just stop…

I’m with Brody. I’ve been listening to the “Pancho and Lefty” album ever since I was a kid and I never get tired of it.
February 11, 2009 at 10:52 am Permalink
Seven Spanish Angels is fantastic, but it still doesn’t touch Pancho and Lefty. That song never gets old.
Other favorites are “Highwayman” and “Old Friends”

Im a huge fan of Willie singing with Dyan Cannon or Emmylou Harris in the movie Honeysuckle Rose. If you haven’t seen it….I highly recommend it!

Since I’m always way out here in left field, I’ll go with Willie’s duet with Mark Seliger on Rusty Truck’s “1000 Kisses”. What can I say, I prefer the obscure…..

My favorite Willie collaboration is the Willie Nelson and Friends double album on vinyl! Every song on there is song with a great group and top to bottom it’s a great album.
February 11, 2009 at 11:45 am Permalink
My favorite has got to be “Good Hearted Woman” with Waylon Jennings.
February 11, 2009 at 11:50 am Permalink
Pancho and Lefty is the one.
February 11, 2009 at 11:51 am Permalink
As a single collab, I love the Willie / Shelby Lynne combo. “Angel Flying Too Close” is delicious.
February 11, 2009 at 11:58 am Permalink
The “Two Men with the Blues” album with Wynton Marsalis surprised me and is up there with the best.
February 11, 2009 at 12:35 pm Permalink
I love the Pancho and Lefty album that Willie and Merle did and because that has already been mentioned I will say that my favorite is “Reasons to Quit” off the same album. The pace of that song fits well with their voices. It never felt like a competition between the two of them and I always got the sense that they genuinely liked each other and respected each other’s music. This was about as close as you could come in 1983 to resurrecting Bob Wills and Lefty Frizzell and trapping them in a recording studio.

i think willie’s collaberation with 8-times gold medal champion Michael Phelps was pretty interesting, but I have to say my favorite is his collaberation with Ryan Adams that resulted in his album Songbird.

Instead of the obvious (its hard to beat teaming with Haggard), I’ll nominate his duet with Pat Green, “Threadbare Gypsy Soul.” When Willie sang it, the title made perfect sense.
February 11, 2009 at 2:33 pm Permalink
i’ll have to go with the duet with sinead o’connor (off ‘across the borderline’). ‘don’t give up’ (written by peter gabriel) is a beautiful song and willie’s voice just fits it perfectly.
OR ‘just one love’ with kimmie rhodes. who doesn’t love that one?
February 11, 2009 at 2:39 pm Permalink
My pick is “Beer For My Horses” with Toby Keith.
February 11, 2009 at 3:01 pm Permalink
I actually enjoyed his “Moment Of Forever” album that he did with Kenny Chesney. I thought it was a fresh taste of both Willie and Chesney.
February 11, 2009 at 3:39 pm Permalink
my fav willie collaboration would have to be Seven Spanish Angels with Ray…..
February 11, 2009 at 3:45 pm Permalink
My favorite collaboration would be his performance of “Faded Love” with Ray Price.
February 11, 2009 at 3:49 pm Permalink
Lately I can’t stop listening to him singing “Lost Highway” with Kurt Nilsen, so that’ll be my answer.
February 11, 2009 at 3:57 pm Permalink
I would have to say “Good Hearted Woman” with Waylon!
February 11, 2009 at 5:16 pm Permalink
The version of Georgia Willie did with Wynton Marsalis on ‘Two Men With The Blues’ is absolutely spine-tingling.
February 11, 2009 at 5:23 pm Permalink
steve harvey, thanks for bringing that one up. there are so many willie collaborations, that one slipped me by. that whole cd is amazing. let’s hope they recorded the nyc shows over the past few nights (willie and wynton live in new york). another willie/wynton cd/dvd could be in the works, assuming they’re recording. :)
there’s no further proof needed that willie nelson is a superb jazz singer than ‘two men with the blues’.
February 11, 2009 at 5:33 pm Permalink
I have to be unimaginative here and join the voters for Pancho and Lefty with Merle Haggard.
I’d like to know if there’s anyone who’s asked to duet with Willie and he’s said no to.
February 11, 2009 at 6:31 pm Permalink
Sorry hard to pick, so I’ll go with a whole album…”the Great Divide.” I love the Rob Thomas songs on that CD, but of course his duet with LeeAnn Womack is amazing…
February 11, 2009 at 9:19 pm Permalink
To borrow a line from Toby Keith, hate me if you want to, but I’m with Jason. I liked the Moment of Forever album and Willie’s song with Kenny, “Worry B Gone”.

1. “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”
2. “Pancho & Lefty”
3. “Mendocino County Line”
February 12, 2009 at 10:37 am Permalink
I like “To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before” with Julio Iglesias. Two voices I’d surely have never thought of combining – but it worked.
February 12, 2009 at 11:20 am Permalink
Hands down, “Mendocino County Line” with Lee Ann Womack
Second Place: “Seven Spanish Angels” with Ray Charles
:)

Hands down, Willie and Ray Price- “San Antonio Rose”

Willie and Waylon (how I miss Waylon!). Mama, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys.
February 14, 2009 at 9:58 pm Permalink
I thought the Farm Aid concerts were great and for a really good cause. Willie has a heart the size of Texas. Neil Young and others, who better to sing with than Willie Nelson.

“Mendocino County Line” with Lee Ann Womack. I really like the poetic lyrical style, and the production is just “big” enough to enhance the song without making it feel overdone.

I miss the days of Willie and Waylon, love the combination. Some great music came out of those two
