Honeyhoney isn’t country. That’s what lead singer Suzanne Santo, one half of the Venice, California, duo will tell you. But the sultry-voiced Santo and her musical partner Ben Jaffe have together created a sound that if not technically country, nonetheless boasts considerably country undertones.
In an attempt to discover and highlight the best music every month, We'll be publishing a list of the best songs released throughout that period. Here's Brady Vercher's picks for September.
Toby Keith - “God Love Her” Solid, though neither life-changing nor earth-moving; “God Love Her” fits well beside Keith’s better material, an uptempo romp that, for better or worse, has no intention of even pretending to be your grandpa’s country music.
Hank Williams III - “Six Pack of Beer” It’s hard not to love “Six Pack of Beer” for its style—Williams remains one of the most unique artists of his generation, and the musicianship and arrangements utilized on his records can elicit truly euphoric reactions.
Kenny Chesney & Mac McAnally - “Down The Road” There is a somberness in Chesney’s delivery that perfectly matches McAnally’s; this understated vocal performance is his best in years.
Jason Michael Carroll - “Where I’m From” In a format already oversaturated with songs about celebrating rural roots, “Where I’m From” begins a step behind and never catches up.
Emerson Drive - "Belongs To You" It's a song as well-constructed as could be expected (considering that it is made up almost entirely of clichés), but which nonetheless feels like an exercise in mediocrity.
Becky Schlegel - "Jenny" It's a study in interpretation and supportive arrangement that maximize the emotional significance of the lyric, reflecting artistry without becoming inaccessible.
For 23 year-old Jeannie C. Riley, the top of the mountain was reached in August 1968, when “Harper Valley PTA” jumped from No. 81 to No. 1 on the Billboard (all-genres) Singles Chart.

What I love most about Dolly Parton is her style of music. It is unique and I like it.
October 6, 2008 at 5:03 pm Permalink
Dolly has got it all; talented, down-to-earth, savvy, sexy without being slutty and of course, a pioneer in country music, esp. for helping to kick down the doors (along with Loretta and others) of the then-male dominated industry.
October 6, 2008 at 5:40 pm Permalink
With early songs like “Jolene” and “Coat of Many Colors” Dolly has written some of the greatest country songs of all time. On the other hand I haven’t been overly impressed with Dolly’s recent singles of “Better Get To Living” (a song so wordy it was tiring to listen to) and “Shinola”, but the title song “Backwoods Barbie” off her new album is classic Dolly back in top form.
Sadly “Backwoods Barbie” will be ignored by Top 40 Country Radio as being “too country” for their head bobbing Rascal Flatts mentality audience. The truth of that matter is many of the pop-rockers controlling Top 40 Country radio can’t tell the difference between the music they play and Shinola…

I think Dolly’s voice is what I love, she sings beautifully and is so unique and irreplaceable.
October 6, 2008 at 5:50 pm Permalink
My favorite thing about Dolly is that no matter what the heck is playing on the radio, what is being said on TV or worn in magazines, she is going to be Dolly Parton. I think it takes a really great human being to be able to carry that mentality.
It also doesn’t help she’s epically beautiful and one hell of a singer and somehow an even more talented songwriter.
Oh yeah, also she is one of the biggest philanthropists the music industry has known to date.
In other words, she just plain kicks ass - and in the highest high heels possible.
October 6, 2008 at 5:50 pm Permalink
Like all the greats, she’s in it for the music. When radio stopped playing her she kept on going, just like her friend Emmylou Harris. And she’s funny and great to the fans from all I read.

My gal is a big fan of Dollywood, so an autographed CD earns me bonus points. Plus, Dolly is just an all-around cool chick who’s never let fame spoil her. Would that other country stars be the same way.

I already own the CD, but the stregnth of her voice is my favorite thing about her. While amny female artists have strong voices, they’re not always necessarily easily distinguishable from one another. Dolly’s voice is both strong and absolutely distinctive. Furthermore, she knows when not to showboat. She can be just as meek and sensitive as she is strong.

Dolly has been a favorite of mine for many, many years. Except for the “Rhinestone” soundtrack and some redundant compilations, I have every album she’s released over the past 25 years. Too often the wigs, the makeup, the outrageous costumes and surgical “enhancements” have distracted from the most important thing — and the thing I love the most about Dolly — her amazing catalog of music.
Mainstream country music has changed dramatically since I started listening to it circa 1980. One of the few consistent things in all that time has been Dolly Parton. She was there when I first discovered this amazing genre, and she’s still there today. So many of my favorites are either gone, in decline, or just inactive, so Dolly has become a precious commodity to me. She is like the Energizer Bunny or the Timex watch of country music — she keeps going and going and going, and takes a lickin’ and keeps right on tickin’, even after so many of her peers have given up. I’m really grateful that she’s still going strong. I can’t imagine country music without her.

I love Dolly for being a true icon of country music. Everybody knows who she is even if they’ve never heard her music. She’s a great role model and inspiration for new country artists. She’s also one of the most talented artists in all musical genres.

I have loved Dolly since watching 9 to 5 when I was a kid. She is the really cool eccentric aunt of country music.
October 6, 2008 at 9:35 pm Permalink
I love her genuine, bubbly personality. She’s so cutesie.
October 6, 2008 at 10:03 pm Permalink
Dolly is a living legend. What I love most about her is that despite her position as a classical and out-of-date artist in the eyes and ears of most record companies, she took it upon herself to release her own album which had the success of any decent artist in today’s genre.
She never backs down and she always has a smile on her face. She is a great personality, a lasting vocal grace and just an all around great artist and entertainer.
October 6, 2008 at 11:05 pm Permalink
What I love most about Dolly Parton is her songwriting, first and foremost. Her songwriting are what brought Dolly to town - and what will be still shining long after the stardust is gone from mainstream success. She has a style all her own, be it rhythm or rhyme scheme. And now, she joins the heady company of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin as she’s taken her co-starring role in the film ‘9 to 5′ and written the songs for a musical version of the film opening on Broadway in March 2009.
Dolly Parton the songwriter is the greatest part of the legend that is Dolly Parton - and are what will be remembered best I believe.

I’m in awe of Dolly’s talent, but what I love most about her is that she is what she is and she’s proud of it. Unlike a lot of stars, she hasn’t ignored where she came from. Instead, she embraces her culture and shares it with everyone. She’s such a great example of how you can stay true to your roots and still become sucessful without using others for your gain.

I can’t think of anything not to like about Dolly. Her musical and songwriting skills are awesome and she’s a fine actress as well. Her attitude toward life is inspiring. Being able to make fun of yourself is a trait few people have. She is an inspiration in many ways.

Most of her songs are musically upbeat but at the same time capture a whole range of emotions that people can relate to. She’s funny and genuine. My main love for dolly parton came about when i was at uni, and we used to listen to jolene all the time and my housemates would call me jolene as i have ‘flaming locks of auburn hair’! and whenever we meet up now, its still our favourite sing along, she is the epitimy of fun, and is all about enjoying people for who they are and i love that about her and her music. i cant get enough dolly parton!

What I love most about Dolly is the way she uses her music to tell not a fake story, but a very true one at that. Her songs have helped me get through a lot and I am very grateful for that. Love ya, Dolly!!!

Style and tenacity. If she had a third breast, I’d give it a name too…
Really though, I love her aura. She seems like such a genuinely good person. I don’t have many of her CDs, but I love her movies- especially BLHIT and Rhinestone- even though the latter was a really, really bad movie, it makes me laugh.

I love how Dolly is all things to all people. I’ve listened to her at my happiest, and at my saddest, and watched her films with friends, family or alone. Through her music she has at times been like a mum, an older sister, a best friend, an eccentric aunt, a pastor, and always a reminder to be true to yourself no matter what. Many other people sing about the same topics that Dolly does, but her true genuineness and caring spirit shines through.

I think the question should be more what dont i love about Dolly, (which is actually nothing) as the list of why i love her would take all day to write. However i guess i will just mention a few points. I was brought up on Dolly as my mum loves her too her songs are all rather meaningful to everyone at some point. she is a very genuine honest person whose songs are still as great today as they have ever been, Combined with the fact she is a great actor, whose flims are also meaningful. To be honest Dolly is just amasingly talented and beautiful!

I love Dolly Parton because she always responds with dignity, wit, grace and kindness when people attempt to mock or belittle her in interviews. She seems to be a gracious woman with a great deal of intelligence. A certain purity of spirit blends well with her down to earth attitude. She is frnk and gently self-deprecating whenever appropriate. She makes great music and infuses it with life-joy, pathos, tenderness, wistfulness, playfulness and all of the other qualities which mingle so perectly in both her personality and persona. Dolly also gives back alot to the world around her and doesn’t take her self too seriously. In fact it seems that she is serious about achieving new heights with her music but wonderfully ego-less (except for a dash of the healthy sort. SO good to see someone still going strong and liking themselves after such a long and illustrious career- no selling out for Dolly Parton!

She doesn’t know me nor I her, but she’s given me more then anybody else. I pray and hope she is as happy as a person can be, because without that sweet Backwoods Barbie I don’t know how I’d ever keep my positive attitude up.
